time for some subaru roundy round
i'm going to bodly go where few subarus, if any, have gone before. my local neck track.

i want to do a junker class 4 cyl oval race in a subie. anybody have a running car they want to get rid of? must be fwd, under 106" wheelbase and be able to fit 14" wheels. it can also be claimed for $500, so i don't want to spend much more than that. it can be anything, justy, impreza, gl, whatever.

once it happens, video will be posted. should be quite the event. here are complete rules if anybody wants to take a lookey:

That sounds like the most fun you can have for $500 outside of Amsterdam.
alacrity024 03-06-2006 05:32 PM

neat, i think they do something similar here.. i wanted to enter my SVX in it when i still had it, but there was no class for awd :(
Storm 03-06-2006 05:58 PM

There's a 4banger class around here...but they must be carb'd and from a US maker.....

No surprise that racers must also purchase their tires from the track owner.....

looks like July 4th is the 4 cylinder enduro, which probably means like 25 laps or something. i searched cars.com, autotrader.com, nasioc.com and traderonline.com and found nothing suitable. i'll keep looking.
gargleblaster 03-07-2006 10:39 AM

try here:

Look in the cars section for the largest city near you. Should be plenty to choose from.
20. No suggestive language, symbols, numbers allowed on cars.
I don't think you'll be up against Team Shocker any time soon

For a class called '4 Cylinder Enduro Front Wheel Drive', they sure like to point out that rotaries aren't welcome :D

----

Lets see.. you can count out the Justy since they're short 1 cylinder. Any of the stock Leones would be a nightmare on a circle track with their awkward suspensions... I would stick to a 93 brighton Impreza.
1. Any 4-Cylinder front wheel drive car....

5. Stock unaltered rear end for that make and model.
Maybe by "stock rear end" they mean "don't weld any spikes or other object to prevent people from getting close to you"

Just out of curiosity, what was the last carburated US 4-banger? Mid-80's K Car or something? Mid 80's Escort? Must be getting tough to find cars to run in that class.
lukerussell 03-07-2006 01:57 PM

"stock rear end"

maybe it's a liposuction reference.

When our local track was still around the enduro was 300 laps on a half mile track. Some of us got together, built a car (Chevy Monza V8), and I got to drive the first 50 laps. The car was surprisingly neutral (ex-autocross car). And yes, all 4 turns were different.

The requirement to move to OBDI killed carbs, and that occured in 1991. I know that Subaru was still using carbs in '87.
thechickencow 03-08-2006 06:41 PM

I bet randy zimmer will chime in here, he's run a legacy IIRC in some $200 beater challenge endurance race in NY.
Skibum4444 03-08-2006 07:31 PM

RX is all I can think of. Take a look at VW, they're cheap.

From the pics.....

....it looks more like a crash derby!

I'm still looking for ya Luke!
Howl 03-08-2006 08:51 PM

I did something very similar with some buddies of mine back when I was in high school (cough*twentyearsago*cough), except it could be any 4 cyl., FWD, RWD, American, foreign. Most people were running Maverick's, Vega's, four-banger Mustangs etc., although there was one Scirocco. We picked up a 1973 Audi Fox. Only 73hp but light as hell and one of the only front wheel drive cars running. The track was gravel so we did really well until one of my friends t-boned a tree that had been planted strategically on the outside of a corner (see "How not to autox" thread).

Good times, good times. . .
greg donovan 03-09-2006 02:25 PM

there is a guy over on legacy central that races a FWD legacy sedan in races like this. it does pretty well.

you will have better luck finding a 90-94 FWD legacy than you will have finding a FWD impreza. plus the legacy is a little more "sturdy" and closer to the maximum wheelbase which will make it mre stable at speed.
wrxsubaru 03-09-2006 02:44 PM

But the impreza would be probably 400 pounds lighter than a 1st gen legacy.
lukerussell 03-09-2006 02:51 PM

don't make me buy a honda:

i can buy a new motor for $150, because it's the motor everybody swaps out.
But the impreza would be probably 400 pounds lighter than a 1st gen legacy.
not really. a first gen FWD 5mt is rated at about 2650 pounds. has better wight distribuiton than the impreza too.
lukerussell 03-09-2006 03:37 PM

i did find a $1000 legacy, but it's awd. still looking.
trhoppe 03-09-2006 03:40 PM

Honda > Subaru for what you want to do. I would whoop yo ass in that civic if you were campaigning an impreza or legacy in the same class.

and by whoop yo ass I mean punt you.

I imagine a Subaru will take a beating better than most other cars. They tend to be very well built structurally and the suspension bits will probably hold up longer.

There's a DL wagon available in Florida for $899 - http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=196780774&dealer_id=16138426&car_year=1988&search_type=both&make=SUB&distance=300&model=&address=32801&certified=&advanced=&max_price=1000&bkms=1141941494445&min_price=1&end_year=1999&start_year=1981&isp=y&lang=en&cardist=74

I heard a story about some rally guys who ran an 8 cylinder audi quattro in a dirt oval race. The rules stipulated that only v8 driven cars could compete, but didn't specify anything about them being rear wheel drive. so i guess they won.

anyone heard that one? I would guess somebody almost got beat up :)
