Tint? part 1

Need4speedTC 01-20-2007 07:04 PM

Tint?
can anyone post a picture of you car and what % the tint is? I would like to tint the windows on my 05 wagon but dont know much about tints or where to get them or any other infon on them. I do know that I dont want somthing too dark, dont want the unwanted attention and I want to be able to see out of the car at night.
kpluiten 01-20-2007 07:17 PM

If you can wait a couple of days for it to stop raining here, I can photograph my wagon with tint. I forget off-hand what the % is, but I think it was 60% on the all the windows except the front two which are about 2/3's as dark due to Arizona law. Basically, until I can confirm what I have, this post is useless...sorry for wasting your time. I can tell you however that my wagon looked 100% better after tint. You'll be amazed. Do not however get a shiny metallic tint because it will look like crap on the back wagon widows with the black paint they have on the inside. Shiny looks better on the sedans because they do not have that black painted windows. Just don't go cheap on tint or it will look like crap in 6 months to 1.5 years. My tint is warrentied for the life of the vehicle, but it cost $200+. Like everything you get what you pay for.

Each state has their own laws regarding tinted windows, so if you want to keep things legal, you'll want to check the laws in your state before having it done. That being said, I did not keep mine legal ;) ... I went 18% all around. I don't have pics yet (it's about 20 degrees outside right now), but I'll try to get some for you soon, and post them.

Max legal tint for MA (35%?) all around:

Untinted pics at http://www.jasonross.net/car/mycar.html

I don't get any unwanted attention, nighttime is no problem, and I pass inspection without a problem. I think the job was something like $200 from a local shop. Don't cheap out on tint, it will bubble and look like crap if you do.
Awd Devious 01-21-2007 11:49 AM

nice tints im getting mine soon.
Homerisking 01-21-2007 12:51 PM

35% all around. I had two criteria before I got my car tinted: one, I didn't want something really dark and two, I didn't want something that was going to turn purple after a few years. Make sure you do your homework on dyed vs. metalized vs. ceramic before you spend your $$

I was thinking at least here in IL you cant have anything on the front windows.
Need4speedTC 01-21-2007 05:11 PM

Thanks for the help I kinda like the 50 % all around. I will post the pics once I have it done which most likely wont be for a while, It takes me a while to do things.
Big-E 01-21-2007 06:21 PM

Need4speedTC, where are you in Westchester county?

If you're near Port Chester, I have used East Coast Auto Spa & Window over the past 20+ years.

I did 50% on my Focus - all windows, except the front and it's good. I had the Subie done at 15% and hands down, this is the way to go. This is not limo black and all five windows are the same. I almost went with the 50% and I'm glad I didn't - go with 15%.

Hell, if you're not too far off, PM me and I'll have you stop by one weekend and you can look at both cars so you have a real-time visual of what each % is like.

Since this was the WRX w/o a tail (or diffuser) it makes the job easier for them to lay down the tinting sheet and trace and cut it to the rear window, for example.

The cost was $240.00 + sales tax or $258.00. I don't know if the price has gone up or down.

Give V.J. (Vito Junior) a call at 914-937-0303. He's on Cottage street right next to the Exit-21 Northbound exit ramp to I-287 and across the street from this exit ramp is a hotel, a Marriott Courtyard I believe.

Good luck.

whats the darkes all of you would say you can go without compromizing visiability too much. also does the tint get darker as % increase or lighter

Be careful. Ask to see the shops samples before you have anything installed. The shop I went to was very cool, they showed me the tint on their personal vehicle and some samples. I say that because 50% is very near unnoticeable from some manufacturers. The shop I went with had 50%, 35%, and 20%. The 20% that I had done (remember, I posted above with 20% on all 5 plus the moonroof) was an exact match for the back windows on the factory tinted Dodge Dakota that the owner/installer had. Their 50% was so light, it was pretty much just for UV protection on the interior....not much more.

To those that posted about ensuring good quality, I cannot agree more. I had my tint installed for around $220/$230 and that was for 5 windows + moonroof. In almost three years it has been absolutely perfect with no change in color, no bubbles, and no loss of adhesion. You can find $100 tint jobs, but you WILL NOT be happy.

Finally, if you're concerned about legality, there is a great spredsheet either here or on clubwrx.net, I can't remember where I saw it. Point is, 50% all around is very far from 50 state legal. Michigan allows nothing in the front, as do several other states as you can see by the posters in this thread. That being said, my 20% all around is nowhere near legal here in Ohio, nor was it in Wisconsin where I had it done. I have NEVER been pulled over since owning my WRX, and certainly never just for tint. It's all in how your drive, how loud your car is, and what the rest of your town looks like. There's thousands of cars here in Toledo with 20% all around, many of them looking MUCH more shady than mine. My bet is those hood-looking cars will get pulled over before I will.
whats the darkes all of you would say you can go without compromizing visiability too much. also does the tint get darker as % increase or lighter
Tint gets darker as % decreases. The manufacturers are talking about the percentage of light allowed through the film.

That being said, it's all up to you as to what "compromises visibility". I can say that my 20% on the front windows makes nighttime turning a little daunting, but I'll never go back. 20% on all my cars for the rest of forever.
Need4speedTC 01-23-2007 04:40 PM

Thanks Big-E I am in Mamaroneck so i will check out east coast auto spa. I know exactly where that is.

i have 35% on my car looks dark as hell at night but for tint its awsome to see out of while im drivin at night dont go past 20% it gets to be hard to see out at night thats the biggest prob ur gunna run into but goodl uck
VR4Impreza 01-23-2007 06:28 PM

I had 15% all around, I got it done in WV (illegal there) but I knew enough people I could pass inspection... I moved here to NC and got lucky last year. I got pulled over, just for my tint, I was driving in traffic conservatively, a bike cop pulled me over and asked what my tint was, he pulled out his meter and checked, he told me as he was doing it "if it's over 25% I'll let you go" (35% is legal here in NC) it read 15%. Luckily I was able to get the front only retinted and take in my old tint to get the ticket dropped.
However apparently you need all 5 35% or above, so I had a LOT of trouble finding someone to pass it this year.
I had a SHO Taurus that had 35% all around, I thought it looked good.
I will go legal from now on, it's not worth the trouble for inspections IMO. However if you know someone who will pass it, go low.
As for visibilty 35% offered better that 15% (obviously) I thought I got used to it, but that's a personal thing. (sorry for no pic... but its dark now)
SwisSlesS 01-23-2007 07:00 PM

35% front, 15% rear, perfect.

That link says you are allowed 35% everywhere except the windshield below the AS-1 line... sounds like 50% would be just fine to me seeing as it's well within the limit...
