Two ideas for exterior, please advise. part 1

Captain TinklePee 01-04-2006 10:03 PM

Two ideas for exterior, please advise.
I had two ideas for the outside of my car. Feel free to make fun of me, as I know I'm probably asking for it.

1. A Silver scoop or STi scoop on my '05 OBP. Think of all the old school Camaros and Firebirds with differently colored hood scoops. I'm a big fan of old muscle cars so I'm wondering if the same kind of look would fly on my car.
Use this for a visual reference of silver on black- http://www.seriouswheels.com/1970-1979/1971-Pontiac-Trans-Am-Tubbed-Black-FA.htm

2. Stealth fighter theme. I like airplanes. Especially bada** jets. what if I did black wheels and super dark tint, removed all badging... basically tried to make my car look i'm driving a black hole. Here's where it gets wierd- my friend that is a pilot suggested this- you know how planes have the green light on the one wing and red light on the other so that you can tell which way the plane is going at night from a distance? What if I somehow put something similar inside my "wing" that I could turn on and off from inside the car. Then possibly put nightvision-green colored lights inside that turn on in conjuntion with the lights in the spoiler, through the tint it would look like a cockpit from the outside. Its not like I would drive around with the stuff on all the time, I would just have it to be kind of a neat trick... "Hey you want to see my car do an impression of a stealth fighter?"

I'm not saying I'm gonna do any of this stuff, I just thought maybe these things haven't already been done 9 million times already so I thought I would pose the question. I have my firesuit on so flame away... I expect to see quite a few :p     in this thread!

There is some wierd/cool/stupid cars here- http://www.seriouswheels.com/

1. Maybe. But remember, you drive a subaru not a muscle car.

2. Without the green and red lights. I am a huge fan of blacked out tho i think it looks really good just get black rims no badges and 15% tint all around do the windshield too. I love the look of tinted windshields.
mcowger 01-04-2006 10:49 PM

Totally blacked out, if done right, looks amazing. I would skip the navigation lights though (esp. given that they would be illegal on the road, likely).
Captain TinklePee 01-05-2006 01:46 AM

but with the airplane lights i wouldn't use them on the road, it would just be kind of a "oh look this is kind of neat what I can do" thing

the silver hoodscoop would be a tribute to the style of the old muscle cars and my attempt to avoid the rice look, not me trying to make my 2 liter a muscle car. if it looks good on a mscle car, why not try it on mine

any more opinions?
BraveUlysses 01-05-2006 01:49 AM

No-go on the scoop.
patriot1136 01-05-2006 01:53 AM

do option number 2 with the exception of the lights on the wing. but the nightvision green colored lights on the inside would be tight.
wrxzboost 01-05-2006 01:59 AM

trade your car in for a trans am...
Blk_on_Blk_Wgn 01-05-2006 01:59 AM

I think blacked out is the way to go...I personally am blacked out and I wouldn't have it any other way..If you like the stealth look it is the only way to go.

1) NAY - your car is not a muscle car. mismatching part colors on a subaru=rice, not cool muscle car

2) all black sounds a lot better than option 1, but remember not to do anything uber stupid at night as it will be much harder for people to see you

EDIT: I would skip the wing light things, but the interior green lights sounds cool

1. awful
2. awful
siperwrx 01-05-2006 03:58 AM

1. Also a No go. It's a cool idea but you might get your ass kicked by some redneck who thinks you might be "disgracing his car with a Japanese piece of crap." I dunno, I think of weird scenarios like that...
2. I am blacked out as well and love it. Numerous compliments and you feel like you're in Nightrider. I like the neon green idea on the inside but not the red/green exterior. You better have some cool gauges to go along with it though.

Yep, tinted front window is a no go in Texas.
animes2k 01-05-2006 04:17 AM

I think #1 would only work if you extended the silver like is done there. Or a similar vinyl theme as is done on the Mach1 Mustang... just plopping a different colored hood scoop on looks wrong for a lot of reasons (see this thread). Even then, it's iffy.

#2: blacked out with green interior lights = pretty damn cool looking, I should think. I have to agree with the others that the green/red thing is a little much.
hikeeba 01-05-2006 09:54 AM

Ok, most threads have a 'devil's advocate,' right? Why should this thread be different?

First off, decide if you want to make your car into a jet fighter plane, or a tribute to American Muscle Mania. Do one or the other. Not both.

For the jet look:
Ok. I give 7 out of 10 points for originality. Turning your car into a plane is an interesting idea. Although, you'd have a much easier time pulling this off with a Saabaru 9.2X. After all, "Saab: We build jets."

The nav lights are a nifty idea, but yes, illegal for street use. However, if you can have them on a switch, get yourself some clear side marker lenses, and put the lights in there. Don't forget your belly strobe, though...

For the tribute to classic muscle cars:
The contrasting scoop idea is ok. I've seen a gazillion carbon fiber scoops on lighter-colored cars, so why not go the other way with the color contrast? Silver could work on black. But you'd have to do more muscley things to the car to pull that off. whatever you do, don't do a reverse scoop with "T/A 6.6" painted on it! Consider red line tires, traction bars, Cragar wheels, and a super-tall Big Daddy Roth-style shifter. try to throw in a CARtoons reference, too; maybe a Krass and Bernie sticker or something...

#2 Like hikeeba said except I'd put the side lights in a set of the jdm side markers, the ones back towards the door. Of course, if you're going full show, you need the red strobe on the roof and belly and repaint everything flat black. Hmmm, dual exhaust with propane "afterburners"?

when I got my last car it had the red ping pong light thing on the rearview mirror. we used to call it the knightrider deal. +1 for K.I.T.T.

for the win.

Slightly off topic, but I have to clean myself up after seeing that miura concept....first car i ever fell in love with and it's coming back
o2sys 01-06-2006 12:31 PM

the stealth idea sounds better than the different body panel idea....

besides that, this is just plain nice:

Too Late :)
I already bought a silver scoop from a member for $35.
If I don't like it then I'll stay home from the bars this next weekend to make up for wasting the money.
To me, It's worth the $35 just to be the first person (apparently) to try it.
I'll post pictures.
siperwrx 01-06-2006 05:09 PM

Oh ya baby. I've since tinted the front windows and gotten the black strip on top of my windshield

SparkysJDMSpeedWagon 01-06-2006 05:19 PM

I'm glad we could be of help. I hope you go for the stealth fighter idea instead, but whatever floats your boat. Maybe, like some people said, some sort of vinyl around the hood scoop to integrate it into the car better.
fragment 01-06-2006 05:24 PM

go for it. I remember how some musclecars had a flat black part of the hood, and I thought I'd try something similar.

No one who has seen this in person thinks it looks anything but great. I went with a dark tinted WRB treatment on my hood. (Ignore the poor clear finish, its since been re-done)

I believe the top 4" or something is allowed to be tinted/painted/decaled whatever. Maybe it's a percentage?? .. maybe I'm just talking out of my @$$

That looks alright! Different, for sure! I like it!

How about a bumble bee stripe across the trunk? I always liked how that looked. Speaking of Mopar stuff, I found Hot Wheels #001 of the 2006 first editions tonight at Toys 'R' Us: '70 Plymouth Superbird - with the 10-spoke wheels. Sorry for the OT. Old hot rods, you gotta love 'em.
Boxologist 01-07-2006 02:24 AM

i'll actually chime in to go with the option 1. some reservations so u don't make it ugly and rediculous. keep it to 2 colors. i'd also say integrate teh scoop witin a stripe. check out where the accents start on the older musclecars for ideas.

Once I get the scoop on I may start to think about some sort of stripe... not something too crazy and not paint either, it needs to be removable.

BLKONBLKWGn... I love your car. I want my sedan to look like that eventually!

WRXGUYINTULSA... I don't usually go in for stuff like that but your car looks rabid as well.

i say go for the all black just not the light thing.
