Wagon windows and self tinting?

I've self tinted (with the Lumar sheets) a few cars (mostly Honda's) now. However, with the WRX wagon I'll be buying, I'm thinking about paying someone with better equipment and experience to do the job.
Anyone do their own tinting? Are the Impreza wagon windows seriously compound curved which makes tinting a pain?

Watched the guy do mine, seemed easy enuff. just placed the sheet on the outside of the window and cut it out, then put on the inside.<----never once did my own so i may make it sound easier then it is??? Did whole car-7 windows in like 1 1/2hr.

I have done it on a couple of my cars and it isn't that hard. DIY Network did a show in it in November. Here is a link to the show notes. Dive in and do it.

My main question, how many "fingers" will I have to heat gun down?
| Tada | 01-04-2006 08:49 PM |
Make sure you buy good tint if you're doing it yourself. If you buy ****ty tint it turns purple and/or bubbles and looks like ****.

I got quoted $175 for everything but front passenger and drive. I pretty much think it's worth it not to get bubbles and peeling, but then again I'm not the greatest at tinting.

^ $175 seems expensive to me considering I got all windows tinted with lifetime warrenty for $150.
OP. I think it's easier to just find a reputable shop and pay a little bit more to have them do the tint. Make sure to also get a warrenty. Also doesn't hurt to shop around.

i tinted mine, as well as a few other WRX's. the wagon is WAY easier to tint because the curve of the back window isn't as bad as the sedan. heat shrinking isn't that diffucult if you take your time.

It's pretty easy minus the small rear windows, I had a heck of a time with those. I need to redo my back window as something tore a small piece away.
Just make sure to use good quality or you'll be kicking yourself in about 6 months.

You guys have awesome prices out there. Every place I've asked has been $200 OR MORE.

$150 sounds about right if you don't get the strip on the windshield. I got that since there is nothing from the factory to keep the sun out and I think it was an extra $25.

5% & 20%
| Tada | 01-05-2006 11:00 PM |
I paid 230 to have mine done 18% all around. It looks really good and the lines are so close to the outer edge.
| WillisW555 | 01-06-2006 12:46 AM |
Of course, when a pro does it, it looks easy. I've never tried my own, but I paid $120 for tint all around on my old MSP. They offered to do the back windows of my STI for $100.

The only hard thing is keeping the tint clean before install and getting that window clean. Also any dirt that loom in the cracks will be sucked up under the tint when you are cleaning the solution out and have fingers. Solution by most places is 1/2 gal of water and about 2-3 drops of baby shampoo. When mounting outside the window to cut.....sprinkle with baby powder and get a wet cloth to make yourself a strip down the middle. Stick tint on and cut from there. Any hard areas, such as defroster area, use the elmers blue glue. I've probably done 20 or more cars over the years. Everything is holding up great. The only thing I dont like about Llumar is that it doesnt work as easliy as solartek. Just my 2cents
| Quack | 01-06-2006 07:33 AM |
^^^ that's just about how i do it, bu w/o the elmers glue.
more good info is on www.tintdude.com
i also have a Llumar video that show's how to prep & install back glass tint. it's a large file thought, (150MB)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to tint my sedan in the spring. Probably just go 20% on the rear and leave the fronts stock to avoid problems with the law. My main hangup is where do I buy a good film at? I do not want a cheap autozone film. Where can you buy Llumar or some equal brand in a small enough amount to do one car?
| chimchimm5 | 02-10-2006 04:47 PM |
I got mine for my old car off Ebay that was precut to the windows, which was better cut than I could ever have done (and saved loads of time). It was real Llumar tint, and it wasn't cheap. Not all Ebay stuff is crap if you're careful.

I never really understood self-tinting... it is like 100 bucks for a pro job and like 20-50 for a self job... and I have never seen a self job that looked decent.

It's a little more than $100 around here. Closer to $175-200, maybe more if you want the fronts done. I did find a Llumar kit on ebay for $40. It includes a window strip, all four doors and the rear window. I can mix and match tints, so even though I didn't plan on doing the fronts I'll get 35 or 50% just in case I decide to do it. The side windows look incredibly easy to do and the rear piece is precut in a single piece, so it shouldn't be to bad. I've tinted before with pretty good results using crappy quality tint, so this should be ok. I've got a heat gun, so shrinking shouldn't be an issue either.
ChimmChimm, does $40 seem about right or is that a little off from what you paid?

Yeah, for popular cars, (civic, wrx, etc) $40 is about going rate for a full set (2 front sides, 2 rear sides- including any small sections, rear glass). For less popular "self tint" cars (usually soccer mom cars) I saw them for $25. After getting the precut set, I would NEVER cut my own EVER AGAIN.
What's nice, is you can mix and match. I got 35% for the 3 rears, and 50% for the fronts and I'm in California where technically you can't add any tint to the fronts. However, since the rear contrasts obviously with the front, it's not noticeable.
Next time, I think I'll have a professional do it but I've never seen any 5 window reputable professional tinting around here for less than $150. If anyone knows any in the San Jose area, let me know.

Have any pictures? I really want to see that 50%. Here in Michigan the cops tend to go overboard when it comes to tint. I would like something up front though, just to complete the look.

Pics I have to get later. But I googled this one, and it's close to what I have.
So long as the contrast is obvious and the front isn't too dark, I doubt it's worth their time. Most people in general don't even know my fronts are tinted and just assume it was like that from the factory (since all cars have some tint from the factory).

I am a DIY guy. However, with these sort of artistic things that take trial and error to master my vote goes for having a professional who is experienced do the work. I had mine tinted professionally for $150. Superb job, not a flaw -- and you'll kick yourself in the ass for every little/big mistake you make - You've all seen ratty cars with air bubbles in the tint...its not always because they are morons, with anything - it takes practice - you sure you wanna practice on your baby?

I've tinted my VWs, but last VW I had i got professionally tinted and I was happier with a job (even though I've become a pretty good amateur tinter). If I tint my WRX I'll probably do it professionally.
