Which chassis mods are worth their weight on the track?

Hey all,
I see fender braces, subframes, subframe braces, rear strut braces... etc etc etc.
Assuming no cage or rollbar, which of these modifications are worth the added weight? I imagine objective evidence is hard to find, but try and use it when possible.
Thanks,
Chris

first, seat time is worth more than ANY mod.
however, as for bracing, the best really is a cage. A cage that ties into the strut mounts and other points on the chassis will make it so rigid that to get one wheel off a car, you have 3 off the ground (take a look at any race car and you'll see what i mean).
as for street cars, IMO the fender braces are junk. The only bracing i would do is an X-brace (GB on iwsti ;)) and the GTspec under braces.
thats my 30sec bracing post.

 What are you basing that decision on????
I would completely disagree as would hundreds of others on the fender braces. After those you could look into some under body braces like the GT specs ones that add additional attachment points to the chasis. In the end it will not be as stiff as a full cage, but it sounds like you don't want to go that way.

A lot of people are reporting a noticeable improvement in ride quality when they install beefier cowl stays (aka fender braces). This makes sense, since a stronger brace there forces the suspension to absorb more of the shock instead of transfering it to the chassis.
As far as performance improvements are concerned... I don't know. I installed a rear strut tower brace in my car and didn't notice anything. I love my Perrin brake master cylinder brace though.

Yeah, this is a street car with two baby seats in the back on most days.
Saturdays and Sundays, SM AutoX is the game. Some things are not allowed in SM, and Im trying to determine if the Fender Braces are OK. They replace a factory part, but some, like the Cusco, I think, pick up an extra attachment point.
I also cant determine if the X-brace is legal or not (or a V-brace back there). I'll go stare at the rules again.

wait....i'm confused. Subject says "Which chassis mods are worth their weight on the track" then you follow up saying this is for SM autocross.
So what is it? track duty or cone dodging?

the 3 cars i've installed fender braces on. While they "look cool" and you can ad them to your mod list, i felt NO difference when driving the cars after. Granted i did not track them (thats my normal test of a part), but for $100, i would rather spend it on seat time or tires. Both of those will show a LOT more improvement (time wise) than fender braces.
also the X-brace is not scca AutoX legal :(
I donno, I'm a track snob so i would rather put in a cage and be done with it, than adding bracing... but to each their own. Right now my race car chassis is stiff enough that i pick up a front wheel in some corners and i dont even have a front strut brace

For SM I believe only a cage and strut bars are legal out of what you have mentioned....

wow, i did two events(track) back to back weekends, same track and installed fender braces for the second one...noticeable turn-in difference, and i'm not the only one that noticed.

Does anyone think highly of a rear strut tower brace?
| GreasedLightning | 10-30-2006 07:18 PM |
Rear strut towers are too close to the back seat bulkhead to need a support. Just more weight up high.

For autocross, none of the above. For smooth track, I'd also choose none of the above.
My $0.02

I plan on purchasing a rear strut bar in the future mostly to get rid of my rear window from squeaking.
| alltracin | 11-01-2006 05:53 PM |
My personal feeling on rear strut tower braces is this:
Who cares what the rear wheels are doing? I'm focused on getting as much grip as possible to the front tires. After I'm happy with the front grip (who ever is??) then I'll move onto making the rear happier. For now, if the rear camber gets out of whack, who cares? It probably just makes the car understeer less

I track my car regularly and would recommend the fender braces and H-brace.

from some braces that I have on my car :
front swaybar - I have the Cusco one and for my taste, I like driving the car with the stock swaybar coz it makes the car understeer too much
rear swaybar - I have the Cusco one and loving it :D it makes the car oversteer a lil bit.
front strutbar - I have the one-piece Carbing bar, which I think makes some differences... I can feel the front end is a lot stiffer when I go over speedbumps and taking corners
rear strutbar - I can't feel much differences. the most useless bar IMO (maybe it's just me...)
fender braces - gotta loves this one... :D for $100, I can feel the differences when taking corners. the front end turns-in quicker and you can feel the stiffness that they add.
I still have the 8-point Do-luck's aluminium subframe and Do-Luck's floor support bars waiting to be installed... :D

I have just installed Cusco Brake master cylinder brace an it makes a whole lot of difference on the braking experience. Worth it's weight and money.

fact: i have a front strut tower brace and a cobb rear sway bar. all else stock. with the rsb set on middle stiffie, i lifted a rear tire at autocross. that should mean something about the rigidity of our cars stock.
opinion: the front strut brace probably does nothing, but it was a freebie. for fun i set the rsb to full stiffie for sideways action. however it's probably another useless mod for timed races.
