Why Civic in STX?? part 1

wrx2.0 555 05-24-2005 02:07 PM

Why Civic in STX??
I noticed this in Atlanta and now, looking at the Atlanta SeDiv entry list, I see it again.

It would appear as if its the same car, based on entrant info.
Entered in STS and STX....

Do they do it hoping one will be the "tire warmer". OR are they just hoping for more than one class win.
What might be the typical drive behind a decision like this?

Just curious.........

Scott

For those extra curious ones--here's the entry list--

multiple class wins, more opportunity for contingency with more classes, STX is often slower LOL.
Scooby Freak 05-24-2005 02:13 PM

I'm guessing if more than two people are going to run it, then it will have to be in more than one class.

Well..it looks like its in STSL also, so that may play a part in run group order conflicts...I dunno...
KC 05-24-2005 02:23 PM

An STS car is fully legal in STX and STU.. and an STX car is legal in STU also.

If they want to run against higher prepped cars, they can.

I know this.....I was just curious why they would.....

In my case..I could run my car in SM, but I wouldnt because I'd lose..

I'm guessing, in the case of the Civic..they KNOW they have the potential of winning both classes, so they run both.
I guess whether or not the Civic wins STX will mostly be course dependant??
trhoppe 05-24-2005 02:28 PM

Well also, thats the Underdog Civic. You already have 2 people running it in STS and then Heyward's Wifey in STSL. So only place left for another driver is STX.

Last but not least, I think the Civic would be an STX killer if someone built one ;)

speedyHAM 05-24-2005 02:28 PM

What would be legal for STX and not for STS that you could change at an event?
There is a CRX in STX in my region, I'll have to ask him what mods put him in STX.
trhoppe 05-24-2005 02:29 PM

CRX != STX ;)

And a diff is what would put you in there.

-Tom
Corey 05-24-2005 02:31 PM

I assume you are talking about Heyward's car.

Honestly, people do this all the time with dedicated auto-x cars. It happens because you have some people who don't have a car to run, and other people are nice enough to let them run theirs.

In this case, Cliff needs a car to run... Heyward and Mitch are already running STS. So, Cliff runs STX. I don't think they are looking for a competitive advantage. Cliff always bums rides and Heyward, being a nice guy that he is, let's him drive the Civic. Just so happens that it can be competitive in more than 1 class.

Does this mean you're "borrowing" the car from Biggly? Or is he coming too??
cooleyjb 05-24-2005 02:37 PM

Up here in Milwaukee someone is running a GTI with a Front LSD which has bumped him from STS to STX. The car is really quick and definitely holds its own.
What would be legal for STX and not for STS that you could change at an event?
Not much. The most obvious option would be bigger wheels/tires, but I don't think that applies to a Civic. AFAIK, they're not even running 225's, or at least not all of them. Otherwise, if somebody is quick with the wrench, they might be able to swap exhausts between heats.

I'm sniping bigglys car for the divisional and the oscoda pro, so he won't be down :(

Interesting... I know this can and is done for regional events, but I thought there was a maximum of 2 different classes for a car to be run in at a Divisional or National event. I guess it depends on if the rule is in the rulebook or if it's in the National Tour/ProSolo supplementals....

Ladies are so slow they don't really count that as an actual class.
GLIMattu 05-24-2005 08:48 PM

Is this for a contingency possible race? I use to race under Mazda Motorsports and they give more money if you beat more cars in the class. I think BFG does also. Maybe there are a few guys that got together to expand the size of the class to increase the contingency money. Just a thought.

I don't think Mazda has any contingency for Divisional Events. I wish.

Godspeed.

Its got frame damage I think i'm going to trade it in as soon as I get it back from the shop.

Ohh yeah civics are fast. I think someone could take STX in one if they set it up right.

ProSolo.. never. Solo-II... it's possible/course dependant.
DrBiggly 05-25-2005 11:00 AM

I'm not coming to Atlanta due to financial troubles. Otherwise I'd be there no questions asked.

KC doesn't notice that STS beat STX at the Atlanta Pro, and that in Heyward's Civic, me never having even *been* in a civic before, I was 0.2 off my WRX time on both sides while running 0.2 slower 60ft times then Heyward can in the car ;)

Throw a slip in there, lighter brakes, a little more powa and BAM winner car.

And probably a hellavu lot cheaper to build up...
PKer 05-25-2005 03:34 PM

I'm just happy when I go faster than STS. :( (Which never happens if Ken Da Man Motonishi is in attendance.)

Normal people think I'm crazy when they ask for a suggestion on a good used car and I tell them 89 Civic Si.

how about just taking my car and shaving 200lbs out of it? no quaife or additional power needed! which reminds me, i've gotta weigh this pig again and take it to the dyno too...

There will be one at the Toledo Tour in two weeks. He does really well locally (philly region).
I really want to see how the E30 m3 does in STX this year.
I think we finally have some answers on this one, at least initial ones. Tunnel was about 7 tenths off me per side at the Pro-Solo. I think we are talking about a 4-5 tenth advantage to the first corner, and Bob had not driven that car much before the event, worth another couple of tenths. I think at a tour, it could be competitive (but no overdog for sure). There is still no ProSolo answer to the WRX though.....

Tour/Championship=WRX=E30M3=Civic=CooperS...IMO.
AUTOwrXER 05-26-2005 11:43 AM

When we move the championship to asphalt in 2006, I think the WRX will distance itself from the others in STX.

And there'll be a very big classing re-structure.
Jsortor 05-26-2005 01:57 PM
And there'll be a very big classing re-structure.
Think so? What is your opinion of what should happen? I believe that in another 5 years max, we should see a ST structure like that of S/SP/P using A,B,C so on for class separation....

nate
who does your weighing and dyno work?
solo-x 07-07-2005 08:05 AM

i usually go to CD Performance in Fall River. I don't do much tuning while i'm there though, just a baseline. i'm still trying to line up someone that has a laptop and can realtime tune my chipped ecu. as for weighing, i've had small fortune do it in the past. this year i'm going to probably just weigh it at the tour and adjust corner weights only if they are REALLY far off.

nate
solo-x 07-17-2005 06:47 PM

i got to drive chang's civic today. holy crap does that quaife make a difference. i think my car has better ultimate grip and balance, but that diff pulls his car around so good it makes up for the other problems. i figure without the diff his car would be a solid half second off mine. as it is, it easily runs identical times to mine. i got me a hankerin for some DA's too. would make getting to a rain setup a lot easier then i have it right now. (right now my rain setup = drive smoother and enjoy the drifting) oh yeah, his car is 100lbs over weight right now too, and doesn't make near the same power my car makes.
