Wing or No Wing part 1

SiC Stoner 11-02-2005 04:11 PM

Wing or No Wing
That other thread about what to do with the sti wing was hillarious. I was wondering who has taken their wings off and who prefers to keep them on? I have a wrx but the dealers threw on an sti wing, and i like it on for now.

My Spec C came with the CF wing, that was removed and replaced with the High Level one and in time that will come off, to be replaced with a CF boot lid and NO spoiler. :)
I have a wrx but the dealers threw on an sti wing, and i like it on for now.
I'm assuming left over from an STi buyer who refused to buy unless they removed the wing? I tried that approach, but neither dealer would go for it. They just offered to put me in touch with recent WRX buyers who might be willing to swap.

I never really liked the wing. I like my STi much better with just the WRX spoiler and the improvement in rearward visibility is just dramatic.

The other day I walked past someone's recently purchased '05 STi with the wing on and was instantly reminded how ridiculous the wing looks, especially on a 4-door sedan.

I'm a fan of the stock WRX wing, I think it gives the car a bit more character, without attracting too much attention, unlike the STi wing. I also really like the Euro wing someone posted here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=822112&page=1
beastSTI 11-02-2005 05:18 PM

I'm glad that I don't have my STi spoiler anymore... I had mixed feeling on it, but never actually liked it in the first place. It makes the car look like a shopping cart. :-(
Lachlan 11-02-2005 05:27 PM

I have a big ricey 22B replica and I like it. I think it makes the car look more aggressive. It's like how some dogs just don't look right with their tail chopped off...
grannyshifter 11-02-2005 05:55 PM

i like both with a wing and without but if someone wants to give me their wrx trunk then good, i wouldn't spend $ to get rid of my wing and i wouldn't trade it either. subaru didn't put the wing just for looks, it is functional. ;)
JM530 11-02-2005 06:17 PM

I traded mine with a WRX about a month ago. I really like the look of it. More reserved for sure.
NextCar 11-02-2005 08:18 PM

The Sti wing looks "come and give me a ticket" and ricey. No wing looks Moms econo box, WRX look ma a wing....STI wing stays on...car need rear end re-design
Balr14 11-02-2005 08:19 PM

The wing was the biggest reason I didn't buy an STI. It just looks silly on a little 4 door, plus it attracts way too much unwanted attention. Cops around here watch for tricked out Japanese cars like you can't imagine. I couldn't get a dealer to sell me one without it, so I just said screw it and got an FXT.

keep wing
jason2004STI 11-02-2005 09:34 PM

W I N G L E S S ! ! ! !

I recently purchased a Seibon Carbon Fiber trunk lid. I absolutely LOVE IT wingless. Plus the Seibon trunk is shaved (no keyhole).

Peace

....my new TR will NOT have any wing.....nor did my '02.

.....making yourself(more of) a 'target' or 'magnet' for vandals or kiddies or the pigs, these days, is just plain foolish......and leads to many "&!*&!*&^%#!@$&^*" threads, here...... :(
rubberbiscuitt 11-02-2005 10:43 PM

i just bought my wrx yesterday and i swore before i got the car that i was going to do the wingless swap. the function of the wing is growing on me. it makes the trunk easier to open. and my son calls it a handle (to push the car).

No wing looks ugly, unbalanced, and just plain weird. WRX wing looks nice - balances out the back end and cleans up the trunk lines. STi wing looks ugly but it's functional.

So I say WRX wing just for purely aesthetic purposes. I find an impreza without wing attracts way more looks and attention than one with a WRX wing - a no wing impreza back end just sticks out like a sore thumb.
turb04 11-03-2005 03:05 AM

its a rally car keep the wing...!
gc822 11-03-2005 03:31 AM

I say go wingless, but someday if I find a killer deal on one I may just buy one... who knows :p
truwrxtacy 11-03-2005 03:34 AM

wingless +1
EarlQHan 11-03-2005 04:03 AM

Honestly, you guys are weird. I think the STi wing looks HOT. When I see pictures, the wing looks awesome, especially since it balances out the hoodscoop. BUT, I want to go wingless, WRX wing or with decklid spoiler, why? It's just too hard to see out the back :P If I ever got an aftermarket turbo and FMIC, I'd also go scoopless. I'm thinking of going with a WRX trunk swap, because it's easy, and no cost to me (there's always someone willing to swap out there). I would like to go wingless, but almost impossible to find someone willing to trade their wingless WRB trunk because it's so rare. But, if I do a WRX trunk swap, it's also easier to go wingless as there are less bolts that hold it down than on the STi trunk.
x_rev 11-03-2005 09:37 AM

it all boils down to personal preference .. i am also those 'wingless' kind, had asked the agent not to install the wing upon collection .. and to my opinion, the wing is heavy .... for those who like to shave weight here n there, this is a good option ...
stArs Inked 11-03-2005 05:31 PM

I simply do not like wings on ANY car. Some people LOVE them, just not my style.

IMO the Impreza trunk has SUPER unique lines with the almost half-pipe looking deck, it is hard to notice unless you are wingless though.
Rickyh 11-03-2005 05:42 PM

Hmm. I got an s202 replica wing last week. it looks sooooo much better than the stock wrx wing. Of course this is only my opinion.

PKSJ4 11-03-2005 06:07 PM

My opinion........
without the wing it looks wimpy and more like a chick car.
with the wing, it gives it a more muscle car look. makes it look fast.(it is).more of a man's car.

saying that,im not a real fan of the look. but i would never take mine off.thats what makes it a STI. :)
STi-JDM 11-04-2005 06:35 AM

I like the STi wing :D
sleedog95 11-04-2005 10:32 AM

Like Balr14 said before, the STi wing is the main reason why I opted for the WRX over the STi. Never knew trunk swaps were so common. Of course, now I long for STi performance...so I just mod my WRX to get it close to the STi now. STi and a trunk swap is the way to go. Bottom line...no wing.
shogun90 11-04-2005 12:43 PM

I swapped my wrx wing for the STI wing and like it. I don't think the rearview visibility is that bad. I think the wing is a nice balance to the hood scoop. Without the wing the car looks like something has been chopped off because of the short trunk. I have to admit the pictures of a wingless wrx is not bad but when I saw it in person I felt it was missing something. I really like the wing with the carbon fiber middle piece (i.e. Kaminari and 22b). Just my opinion. But the wing does certainly draw attention to you.
sabubarub 11-04-2005 02:09 PM

if i take the wing off...

What is a ballpark price to get the holes filled? Is it easy to do yourself? i have some touch up paint..

no wing on my 02 wrx... all my friends tell me it needs one but I hate that look!
hlanderr 11-04-2005 04:26 PM

since like no one has shown any good feelings towards the spoiler, ill show some affection to it!

i honestly think it makes the STi exterior. From a distance you can't really see the fog light covers, side splitters and hood scoop. I have a WRX, and I really do like the WRX spoiler, but if I had an STi I would definetly keep the spoiler!

mine was $175 from a buddy at a bodyshop, just go get a couple of quotes from any local shop to compare, I would not rec this as a DIY mod...
PARANOID56 11-04-2005 05:51 PM

go wingless. looks great.

I also had alot of mixed feeling, although it does take away from the character of the STi, it also makes it alot sleeker, and less attention IMO....

On the flip side, i always feel like just swapping and putting on my sti trunk lid/wing just for kicks...

One thing for sure i always hated the wing before I bought it, who knows I sort of want the wrx spoiler....haha im a confused person
