Pastrana to 4 wheels in a Subaru

Looks like he is comitted to 7 events this season on 4 wheels and driving a Subaru.
I hope he curbs his enthusiasm and keeps it on the road. If he does he could end up being very competitive.

he did pretty well last year in a couple events w/christian in the silly seat reigning him in. it should be an interesting season.
i am amazed at how well GN is taking off.

I'm not surprised at GN, in Australia their championship is GrpN. Plus Subaru puts up big money for GN right now. Pat took home $2500 from sno*drift and the end of the year payoff is pretty big too. I think it's going to be an uphill battle for Pat, Travis, and the others though when Stig Blomqvist comes over in a David Sutton GrpN Impreza. I sorta wish there was a way you could make him exempt from the Subaru contingency, so those who need it could get it, but I'm not sure how fair that would be.

Fair? Subaru already stated that if you've ever won a WRC event you don't qualify for the contingency plan. Screw fair! ;)

Sure. Any amount. And I've sat with Pat. I know he's fast.
Well, ok, not any amount, but how about $100 that Stig finishes higher overall in the events that he and Pat both compete in.

From a car prep standpoint I think Pat will be at a disadvantage. Not that doesn't have a well prepped fast car, but Stig will be driving a GrpN Impreza prepped by probably the best shop outside of Prodrive.
As for driving, it's hard to say. Pat in his prime right now, Stig's prime was arguably 20 years ago. I would still pick Stig ahead though based on experience. Buffum should run some rallies and give them a run for their money too. :)

I guess I meant more organized team, service, etc. It would make sense they are buying cars from Prodrive. Do you know who is going to be servicing the cars in the US?
| bjorn240 | 02-09-2005 10:52 AM |
David is building a shop in Newport Beach, California. The car will be serviced and re-prepped there.

Group N can be a pain in the arse................Its alot cheaper to build an open class car..... Finding all the inteir pieaces to make it legal is just a pain.... I think pat will have an advantage this year...Hes already run all the races "big advantage in blind rallies" ... Plus the N9 & N10 are similar there is really no advantage

The blind rally thing is an advantage for Pat but I'm not sure it's going to affect Stig as much as most competitors. There is likely nothing here he hasn't seen in his years of rallying. He came and ran Maine in '99 and beat Frank Sprongl by a decent margin, in an event the Sprongls had run a few times and even won in the past.
I looked at Pat's car at sno*drift and couldn't tell whether he was running the newer twin-scroll setup or not, maybe he'll chime in. Pat will be the underdog and that's not really a position he's been in during the US/Canadian rallies over the last year or so. Should be great competition.

uh, no. your crazy if you think building a open car is cheaper.
pat gets my vote, what i've seen of his driving in person seemed good, he (and the rest of his team) is a cool person, and as previously stated stig may very well be over the hill. he may not have the bestestnewest gN car, but he WANTS to win.

Its a pain to try and build a legal group N car out of a US spec STI
Get rid of the motor/tranny/brakes/diffs/body panels - you can be protested if you dont have the correct body panels "alot of teams in the US are not really group N legal and could be protested" For example the car travis used at rim -- It was a N9 with 04 body panels
You can get an old gc8 shell ... throw in a group N motor/antilag/motech/group N tranny/ STI diffs with active center diff and have a perfectly good open class car that would cost cheaper then building a N ..without haveing to search for dash pieaces and other junk to make it N legal

a pain, yes. most gN cars in the US wouldn't be legal period because they don't have the correct vins (none of the correct vins came to the US). and there are numerous places that import the proper parts, but yes, searcing for parts would get old. but to build a "US" spec gN car wouldn't be nearly as expensive as a proper open car, mostly because a correct open car requires parts FAR more expensive than a gN car. most open class cars are more like "super gN" than actually open, none are built to the full extent of the rules. by nature a open class car is far more expensive, if only for motor/tranny costs alone.
any why would you even bother starting out with a US sti? most every part that makes it a sti needs to be replaced anyway.

Last 3 years of racing excluded ;) Then again, for these last couple of years, anytime he's actually competed in a SX/National he's either been injured, coming back from an injury or sick...
Still, though, one of the best all time perfomances I've ever seen on a motorcycle was him schooling everyone at the Spring Creek Nat'l in '01, unbelievable.
He's already had a couple pretty impressive finishes rallying last year with his limited experience. Provided he stays focused he should do quite well.

Other than his recent bad decision resulting in crashing his Vette with his buddy getting injured he has a pretty damn good head on his shoulders. This does not take into effect his natural talent driving/riding perfromance vehicles. Travis is also a natural in front of the camera. This will payback in spades with the media and sponsors. Travis is going to bring many new fans to the sport of rallying.
I am most looking forward to seeing Valentino Rossi making the switch to 4 wheels. That boy is sick with talent.

I grew up riding and racing dirt bikes and would compete against YZ's, etc with my MX trail bike. Got many 1st places but never had the funding to take it further(ie nice bike and travelling for motocross). One trail enduro my dad and i entered, we couldn't get my bike started and eventually left in dead last by about 5 minutes. We eventually came in first place that day. I broke the seals on the front shocks when the bike was new cause i rode it so hard. He got hazed from his peers for not buying me a new YZ and they all pointed at the bike. I knew he would have like to get me a race bike but just couldn't afford it. My dad passed when i was 17 and that pretty much ended any possibility of me taking it further. Since then i have changed to cars, all my fun riding spots are closed now, so i can't relive those memories anyway. Again, no cash to take it to the level of travis but i think i have the talent. I've had driving instructors hand me their cards telling me to look them up when i'm ready to start my racing career...little do they know i'd like to start now :), now i just need to win that damn Lottery...anyone else ride dirt bikes?

Basshead, nice post:) Sounds like you can ride.
In 1976 (age 13) I started riding on a Suzuki ts185 dual purpose bike. Since then I've ridden and raced on just about every surface. I still ride as much as I can on both sleds and bikes.
However the previous 7 years I lived on a snowmobile and raced the 75/76 season with results like yours. In short I did very good and I thought I was on my way to a life of motorsports competition. Then my Dads employer, Mercury Marine decided to pull out of the snowmobile business thus ending my so-called life because he worked/managed and we lived on there 500 acre test site in northern WI. That was no more. Now I'm married with kids and still wondering. :p Similar to your past. /my breif life story.
Some of us just know what it takes.
Good luck. Crosses fingers and hopes one of us wins the Lotttery.
