painted CF hood?!?! part 1

rally_on 11-13-2005 07:02 PM

painted CF hood?!?!
hey guys,
i was wondering if anyone has had any problems after painting a carbon fiber hood. does it crack, or fade easily? i was thinking about painting the sides of my CF hood to make it stand out a little bit more
t3hWIT 11-13-2005 07:05 PM

working on that now... bump this up in a week or two...
rally_on 11-13-2005 07:07 PM

^^^what?
hlanderr 11-13-2005 07:09 PM

i dont think it would break on you man.... its paint!
Audiomotive 11-13-2005 07:36 PM

It's perfectly fine to paint. I've had my trunk painted for months now with no problems.

any way to remove the paint if im going to sell it. or can you paint over it another color?
Timmy Burns 11-13-2005 09:04 PM

you can paint cf like you paint anything else. It won't look or feel any different.
^^^what?
I said "working on that"

I have only a few hours a week to work on it, damaged in a rollover on my previous Impreza, asthetically fubar, but still structurally sound, it flexed under the weight of the car, and unlike the roof, popped back out when rolled back onto the wheels.

It is heavily saturated with automatic transmission fluid, along with deep deep gouges, and a small dime sixed hole worn into it, the only cracks were in the supports on the underside, all that damage fixed with 3M's Rigid Plastic Repair, p/n 5885. That part not shown in the pics, nor the coatings of Polyflex which are some shade of blue. I would have documented all of this for Nasioc, but really, who cares?

The fluid has been baked out for the most part, cleaned with DX330 (not sure of it's proper name, thats what we call it) and Multi Prep, some plastic cleaner. The damaged areas aren't bleeding anymore so I went ahead with the repair, will primer it hopefully next weekend and install it. I'm not painting it yet as 1) I still need one smoothy 99-01 headlight and no one is offering one cheap(I want to install it painted with the proper grille and headlights), and 2) I don't want to put the money out for paint if the repair will not hold. I already spent too much on this "hopeless" scenario.

Shallow scratches sanded, deep ones "V"d:

Whole panel sanded to 220grit:

And yes, I am aware that this isn't EXACTLY what you were asking about, but it's my 2c (2$?):)

OIC. interesting project. are you painting it yourself or having a shop do it once your done sanding?
t3hWIT 11-13-2005 11:37 PM

I'm doing it. Pennsylvania College of Technology. Collision Repair student (a.a.s.) then another for Automotive Technology, emphasis on the later. I can do collision work if necessary, but I only really enjoy the later. Long term plans include a suby shop...:D

I am gettin the CW-II C/F hood and I was thinkin of doing siver racing stripes front to back. Is it ricer to get a C/F roof protector? That way hood, roof, trunk all C/F. Has anyone seen a C/F roof?
t3hWIT 11-14-2005 05:35 PM

I havent. A Bullshizzing ricer back home claimed to be doing that to his Cavi. Obviously he's full of it as he was gonna redo the whole car in CF but stock shaped panels. Go figure.

CF roof overlays are $400, waist of money IMO. also your not making a weight reduction when you just add a layer over the hood. thats just my $.02

Handsdown 11-15-2005 12:52 AM

yeah like that.

i don't understand... the point of CF is that it is strong and light. why add paint weight? does't that defeat the purpose?
volkl23 11-15-2005 01:00 AM

I actually like the carbon au naturle look. Like the reflective properties under light at different angles. Looks coolio! I wouldn't pait it if I had a CF anything!
rally_on 11-15-2005 01:09 AM

here ill post a pic i photoshopped and you guys tell me what you think...
Handsdown 11-15-2005 01:11 AM

i think you need to stop spending money on how your car looks. more suspension, less paint.

that's what i think.

thanks for the suggestion :) . im happy with everything performancewise currently. im getting bored with how it looks and id like to change it up. thats just my opinion... but its also the only one that counts with my car :D
Handsdown 11-15-2005 01:14 AM

:rolleyes:i highly doubt you're paying for your car. your posts look like every other 17 year old's i've seen on here. i mean, you were even asking what GF8 and EJ23 stood for
FIX THAT RIDE HEIGHT FIRST!!!

and wheels.

and get turbo.

oh lord. the list goes on.

*looks up*
you're happy with it performance wise? what did you drive before this, a yugo?
unless your paying for the car, then im deciding whats done next. i said thank you for the suggestions. have fun modding your car, please dont tell me what to do to mine.
Thanks,
Greg

i think handsdown's comments aren't necessary in the interior and exterior modification and care forum. really, i've been reading around and I haven't really found a useful comment from you in a while. Please keep it constructive if you can.
9vapors 11-15-2005 02:13 AM

Go through Launsports website, they make a carbon roof shell that will go over your roof. It's not the price that gets you though it is the shipping!

SpuGen 11-15-2005 02:14 AM

If you wanna paint your CF hood, and keep both painted and unpainted properties, you could put on a light clear gloss coat. It gives it the coloured tint, and keeps the CF peeking through.
Handsdown 11-15-2005 02:16 AM

pleue-
i was waiting for that.

when people ask for opinions, i give them. then when they dislike my attitude, i give my reasons why i have that attitude and then i leave them alone.

if you haven't found useful comments, you're not looking very hard. my rhetorical question in post #16 is pretty useful, and everything else is opinion.

also, if you had actually searched for other posts of mine in this forum, i think you'd feel differently.

This mod is strictly for looks. I like the white WRX's hood. I was thinkin doing that with silver front to back C/F trunk. I guess I could due stripes on trunk and hood only. I think if the roof is solid silver it should look good. Hey if it doesn't then I can get the shell. Thanks guys for the info. and links.
pleue 11-15-2005 02:54 AM

I should have been more specific with my comment. I meant in the exterior interior mod forum with regards to meaningful posts. I did not search, just a personal observation from some casual browsing. I find that some people do some questionable things in my opinion to their cars, but whatever really floats their boat as far as I'm concerned. Telling someone to get a turbo for their rs when they're asking for an opinion of how their idea for a modified cf hood would look seems to be neither constructive nor useful to me. Your comment would be useful if the question of what to do next to my car was proposed. I'm sure you have a lot of useful information to give, I just don't believe that this exchange and others in this specific forum that I've read allude to your expertise.
C43 11-15-2005 03:00 AM

It's cool and my wife asks me the same question. It's funny shes says its a car take it to work and bring it back. I have the larger turbo and susspension bits. Now I want her to look mean. Plus my kids love it. I know my kids are half asian but thay love JDM.
Handsdown 11-15-2005 03:05 AM

C43- i think pleue was voicing his discontent with my posts, not yours. i'm glad your kids like it but i have a hard time believing it has anything to do with their nationality or race:huh:

pleue- i understood you, and i still think you're basing your observation off of two or three posts made in forums where all the useful information had already been given. (by the way, i have an RS too and the turbo suggestion was because he has a hood with a scoop for an intercooler. right now that scoop is just causing more drag, but if he did want to get a turbo kit or an engine swap that scoop could be put to good use. not saying he should, just saying that there are lots of things to spend money on other than paint for a carbon hood)

but maybe you truly think that opinion shouldn't be shared and in that case i'll stick to my original comment.

why paint CF? it's supposed to be lightweight and part of that is that it doesn't need/require paint.
C43 11-15-2005 03:18 AM

It was a joke about the half asian, get it? MY half asian children love the JDM parts, JDM is asian. I am sorry if I offended you at all. They hate my wifes Mercedes so I guess the German side had weaker genes. It so coo,l my kids scream daddy's car when we go out. My daughter actually like to kiss my car good night. She runs full force up to the STi holding a plastic oversized horsy. Slamming her and the horsy's body into my front fender. Screaming I love you Suby. I grit my teeth and smile.
Sorry again I was not trying t be weird, I did not see the harm.

Paint weight? Think about it, how much can a few coats of paint add? Even then, who cares?
turb04 11-15-2005 03:58 AM

carbon fiber only looks good on black cars where it blends in my pinion.. I dont think looking at a car from across an intersection with a black hood or body panels looks cool at all. Looks more like a replacement part that hasnt been painted yet. My .2

yea, exactly. thats why im considering painting the sides. IMO black and carbon fiber dont look good together because they dont match exactly... to each his own :)
