Question about vinyl....
I just bought a couple feet of vinyl. It's an exact match for silver platinum metallic on my car and i plan on trying to cut some pieces out of it to make "eyelids" for my front headlights. Does anyone have any good ideas for an adhesive that would keep the eyelids on, but not get stuck to the point of ruining the headlights or not coming off period? Once i get a good patern for the eyelids, I'll scan it and make it available to i-club. It only cost me less than $8 for 2 feet by 1 foot of this stuff...better than $150 for eyelids plus painting. Anybody have any ideas???

I'm interested in yer question as well so you getz a free bump :)
additionally, I was wondering once you get the pattern sorted, could you also make one so that the line, rather then going straight across the headlamp housing, curves up at a nice smooth angle to meet the line of the hood? if so, I would be very appreciative.

THeres this spray (probably from 3M) that you might be able to use... its weird, its almost like a spary-can version of rubber cement, cuz it smells the same way, and it stays semi-liquidy, so if you don't like it, you can kinda "roll" it away. I can't remeber where I have used that stuff before, but i THINK its mostly used for paper-type goods, so like an art store shoud have it. Ofcourse if that doesn't work, try plain `ol rubber cement.
I would check before u use any adhesive that it doesn't "eat" into the plastic.
My car is silver too, I would luv to see what it looks like after your done (with and without the lights turned on)

I plan on messing around with a few different ideas before i do anything with the vinyl. I just thought of a problem though....you can only attach small pics in here, so i would need somebody to host the stupid template. I guess i'll cross that bridge when i come to it. Hopefully it won't still be raining this weekend so I'll have a chance to try some things out. I also want to try tailight lids too.
If you get a chance, get a close up pic of a headlight, photoshop it and show me an example of what you're talking about sheriff.

it's good vinyl, so the guy said the lights will shine thru....which is good in a way i guess for night driving. If not i could always double up.
As for the spray stuff...i think leeching and staining would be a problem with rubber cement.....that spray stuff may work though. Sounds like that stuff that put on ad cards in magazines to keep them in place.

I used vinyl for my windsheild banner and it just stuck right on! The back of the vinyl was sticky!
Tail light brows, huh? Sounds interesting.......Keep us posted!

I use vinyl a lot because I get it CHEAP. Here's how mine turned out. PM me if you have Q's
I put black under it, straight edge on bottom, then heated up a bit so the vinyl wraps easy...then cut and tuck into assbly. then apply silver...KEEP LIGHTS ON TO KEEP IT HOT- hugs better to curves. Trim and enjoy.
Applicator: use soapy water....one drop hand lotion soap to one bottle of water. like 1 l of water. Then push bubbles out...easy for me because i worked at a sign shop and have helped my dad w/ his sponsorship graphics since i was 8. Good luck and have fun...oh yeah...it'll rip so b-careful!

That's exactly the look I'm going for WRX34! I didn't even think of tucking it into the assembly though, that's a great idea. I'm hopefully going to attempt it today or tomorrow....i'll let you guys know how it goes. I guess you don't really need a template if you tuck the top into the assembly and then just follow the line of the hood straight across the light.

Philly,
Great idea, I've been looking for the vinyl myself for a little while (I also have a silver WRX). What store did you get it from, is there a way for me to get it from them through mail?
Thanks.

WRX34: Ya got any pics with the headlights on and with the blinkers on (I am curious how much your blocking the orange blinckers from showing up). Also, you mentioned that you put black under the silver (or did I miss something there). Why is that? Wouldn't that totaly block the light from shining from under it?
But It looks cool dude.

I got my vinyl from one of those car accessory places that make windshield banners. I figured they would have a big selection of colors and they did. It's a small store though so I'm not sure if they could mail you any. It's Bannon's Auto something something in Trevose PA (on trevose ave) I would check out sign or banner stores around you, they should have what you need (prob for cheaper than $4 a foot) Let me know if you can't find any.

That looks really good!!!:p I've found that the best place to buy vinyl from is sign shops. They will cut any size, or any shape you want. They usually have a large selection of colors. Here in Vegas there is a chain named Fast Signs. I don't know if they have shops outside of Vegas though.
I think the point of black underneath is so that no light will shine through!:p

hey VIP - can you explain what you did? Did you tuck it into the assembly like the other guy? I'm trying to think of other ideas too. Also, how is yours sticking? Any problems? I'm going to try to do it today, but it's kind of cold out...not sure if that will affect the sticky-ness of the stuff.

philly,
hey whats up man, well i kind of did like the e46 m3 eyelid if u have seen it, i put a little curve on it towards the bottom, the first time i put it on, the vinyl ripped, so u have to be careful with it, and make sure u sponge the headlight with soapy water so it will move around to ur desire. Um i hope to have pics soon as soon as i have my camera, and also the new different rear trunk badge, that will be a litttle treat as well, nothing big, but something different that i have not seen yet.

looks pretty cool man.
I made an attempt today, but it's so cold out my fingers were freezing. I think the vinyl i got is different than most people are using. It's really thin and wrinkles easily. If i use water it doesn't stick at all really....it's a little sticky to begin with. When i try to smooth out the wrinkles the stuff just creases. maybe I'll try to get some other stuff today or wait until it's warmer outside???

You use soapy water so you can adjusted it without it sticking. Then when you have it where you want it use a squeege or a credit card to squeeze all the water and bubbles out! It will take awhile to completly dry, so don't drive it right away! The cold will definetly affect the process! It's just like appliing window tint!!!:D
| Philly WReX | 02-23-2002 01:30 PM |
i'm going to try again when the wind isn't whipping around and 10 degrees. I tried the soapy water, but then the stuff didn't even really stay put...maybe i didn't try hard enough. I had a squeegee, but once my stuff wrinkled it wouldn't come out...i think because it's so thin? I'll try again next time it's 60 or 70 degrees.

Hey,
Haven't been able to find any good sign shops in the area, has anyone found an online site that sells the vinyl material? Or even better, has anyone found an online place that has silver vinyl that matches the WRX silver?
Thanks,

If you guys found the exact match for the Silver (and both of the cars in the pix are silver), then could anyone post the vinyl number. I am guessing all these vinyyls are made by 3M or some other big company - the specific number for that vinyl would help us out if we plan on trying to find the same color also.
| Philly WReX | 03-04-2002 06:22 PM |
i only bought a little bit of this stuff and there's no color code on it. I can tell you it's manufactured by Arlon and the type of vinyl is Calon II. I haven't gotten a chance to put the stuff on yet because it's like 20 degrees here. As soon as it warms up i'll try again and post.

Cool, thanks for the reply PHILLY WREX.. also, if you coudl post pics with the lights off and ON. I like the look, but only if the light can shine though it fairly well.
| silverbullit | 03-04-2002 06:39 PM |
both mac tac and avery make a silver colored vinyl that matches the "platinum silver" color fairly well. The only problem you will find is that most silver and gold vinyls are not very flexible and arent recommended for use on curved surfaces (slightly curved is Ok) . They dont last very long either, about 3 years is the maxmum life of most standard gold/silver vinyls, but they may make some specialty stuff that I dont know of (I doubt it though).

As for the blinker....It looks awesome in my opinion. Only like 3/4" space in the middle and thins out like a sliver. You can't tell it's a blinker until it's on.
Black vinyl behind because the exact color match silver was sooo thin you could see some light through it, plus I left a tiny 1/16" or less black on the bottom to look like it was part of the car with a seal there.
Oh, and my dad owns a sign shop so I get it @ cost. Best place to get it! 4 u guys: tell the manager/salesman that you want to color match it. They can order the color you want and they usually have a booklet of the available colors. Take it out to your car to see what you like. Then if they don't have it they can order it! Should be around $10-40 depending on how much and if you install it (cheaper obviously)!
I will be making decal sets based upon the NA and WRC rally cars and will post it in the "Dress Up"/"Private 4 Sale" forums this summer. I'll also be taking special/custom orders as well, so if you can't find what you want let me know!
Any more Q's you can pm me! Peace-

If you guys are ripping the vinyl:
Get an applicator from a sign shop:$0.70-$3.00
(I use the "Golden Squeegie" It has teflon in it and works awesome...priceier)
If you want- Take some of the soft/receiver part of velcro tape and cut it as long as the blade is on the squeegie and apply. It's soft and won't scratch or rip the vinyl as much!

;)
Best part about vinyl: U can take it off if you don't like it!

Well guys someone wrote me with a Q on my sideskirt vinyl;
I did all the work and ideas myself so can't help you there on cost. I can order just about any color though. but 1)where do you live (state or city) 2)color of car? 3)WHAT I DID:
The sideskirts stayed on until the end of winter..it gets cold and I power spray wash the heck out of them, so the front was peeling due to the high pressure and cold air. BUT When I installed it I did so by putting up one long peice the length of the skirt then slicing in half, so I only have to replace a small portion if ripped. Now I'm going to cut another small peice and replace only the front 5-6 inches so I only have to do that 1-2 times a year. You need to make sure it is reeeeaaally clean and wipe everything down with rubbing alcohol...etc. so it sticks good and no bubbles.
As far as color matching...most likely yes, but it might not be a thicker-high performance vinyl which won't last as long. My headlamp is covered in a very thin color matched vinyl, just happened to be a color they had in stock!!!!
I ask where you lived because I could help out in ordering, installing or just help you out. Also if it's warmer that MI then that'll be easier on the vinyl!!!!
Feel free to post this anywhere in case others are wondering as well.
