does Impreza in any other race besides Rally? part 1

RoC_Pooh 08-16-2004 03:53 PM

does Impreza in any other race besides Rally?
like any road course race.
KC 08-16-2004 03:59 PM

Yes. At this time I would point you to the search function that is working pretty well and do a search on the following terms/names in this forum...

1) Gary Sheehan
2) Irish Mikes

Start there, and when you've read all there is about those two, come back and we'll give you some additional search terms. There should be plenty reading just on those two for a while. :)

That's really the problem with great forums such as ours isn't it? There's so much info in here that there's hardly anything left to talk about.

You should have specified american or worldwide.

sure they have subarus racing in JGTC, but those are really just silhouette cars, kind of like SCCA Trans-am. There is also some subarus racing in Time Attack, which is kind of like Solo1 here in the states.

How about this, is Subaru WRX a good base car for road racing? excluding tube frame cars like cusco. I guess the first thing that come into mind is the limited wheel width of a macpherson strut setup? Second is the AWD system.
Mark Avery 08-17-2004 06:37 PM

Whether a WRX is competitiive or not largely depends upon the rules of the series it's entered in - what mods are allowed. Gary Sheehan has been racing a WRX in USTCC, and there have been many a conversation here about this, though he has recently stepped up to an Audi S4 in Grand Am. As has been suggested, search his name, or go to his website: http://www.teamsmr.com/
StuBeck 08-17-2004 10:07 PM

I wouldn't put an AWD car into any sort of track racing. AWD just costs too much in weight...RWD is the best option in my opinion.

Thats an odd question, since most road racing series these days are all equalized with weight penalties anyway. And cars usually go against similar cars. No a sedan like the WRX is not ideal for racing, it could never compete with a corvette...but it doesn't race against corvettes so thats irrelevant..
jmott 08-18-2004 11:13 AM

this depends on a lot of things. For a single top lap time in the dry, RWD does appear to almost always be the best. But Audi found that their quattro AWD setup allowed them to be much easier on their tires, so in the course of a long race they could dominate.

and now they have like a 400lbs weight penalty. lol
RawCode 08-22-2004 04:47 PM

Well they did ban AWD/4WD for a reason in most racing series. They generally dominate. IF they are allowed to race, it is generally with a rather nice weight penalty, in addition to the hefty weight of AWD already.
mafiamotorsports 08-22-2004 06:06 PM

Im wondering if he is asking for street racing purposes
That would be the only real reason you would worry how it would do against cars in a different class. Most street racing doesnt have class limits or rules so to speak. LOL kinda like racing a chihuahua against a greyhound most of the time.
Paisan 08-25-2004 01:54 PM

This weekend coming up at Pocono Raceway I'll be doing my First road race with my '96 Impreza L. I will then be campaigning it in NASA and possibly with EMRA as well.

the only case of AWD domination I can think of was audi in one particular series. please feel free to point out any others.

Yes, the Impreza does well in other types of races. You already saw the JGTC Cusco car. If you want a car closer to stock form, check out the Super Taikyu races. There are several Imprezas being campaigned. http://www.subaru-msm.com/global/local2004/ses/index.html

Off the top of my head, there was Audi in Trans-Am, Audi in IMSA GTO, Audi in BTCC, Opel in the DTM, Eagle Talon won the calss championships from 90-95 in World Challenge, Audi currently in World Challenge, and 2004 is the first year in a very long time that AWD had been made legal in SCCA Nationals. I'm sure there are other examples (Australian Super Touring) that I'm not as familiar with where AWD had dominated as well.
artkevin 08-26-2004 05:48 PM

Well if you are going to use numbers and championships as examples kfoote you are just cheating aren't you?
kfoote 08-26-2004 06:00 PM

sorry, yes I cheated. I did look up the years of the Eagle and Opel Champoinships ;)
Paisan 08-30-2004 12:18 AM

I can now confirm that subarus do in fact race in other than rally events.

I just completed today 2 road races. A 20min sprint/qualifier, and a 1hr Enduro at Pocono Raceway with NASA/Entropy.

Had a BLAST and can't wait to get the 96 L out there again.

Paisan-
What series are you racing with? Is this full out racing or a trackday? I plan on racing with EMRA next season and it would be way fun to have some subies to chace around.

It's full out racin :)

Just got my comp lisc for NASA and EMRA on saturday.

Planning on doing EMRA next year and any NASA-NE events we can muster up in the area. Also AdamSTI who has an RS is hoping to get a cage going so that we can actually have some cars in similar classing to get some competition going!

Join the party!

I am building my car to EMRA GT3 specs. As of now, the car still needs a bunch of work. I am hoping to have it caged by next spring but I still need to get a comp license. In reality I doubt I would be able to start until later next year at the latest.

I think as mine stands now it would be GT2 (one up from "stock" Impreza L) status. Hopefully you can get it caged and a comp lisc shortly so that hopefully by mid-season next year you, Adam and I will be able to get some AWD action going on. Our goal is to get at least 5 guys to build NA imprezas and start a Subaru Challenge, similar to the Honda Challenge that is gaining momentum on the east coast.
