Wrx hood weight
Hey just wondering if anyone happens to know off hand about how much a stock 2005 wrx hood weighes? I need it for a load application process where by im making my own dampers and i need to see how much weight and mechanical leverage I need my damper to be able to hold/withstand. I dont want my hood shooting up but I dont want it to take an hour for it to lift itself. thanks a bunch.

There is this really nifty thing...

It's magic, and it helps you find answers...

I believe the reduction in going from a aluminum hood to CF is about 35 lbs so find the shipping weight of a CF hood and you have your answer. I'm willing to bet the weight is about 55 lbs. Its easy to take the hood off, I'd measure yourself on a scale and then hold the hood and measure again for a good figure.

You sir, need to stop spreading false information. The stock wrx hood weighs about 14.6 lbs... ( about the same as a CF hood )

Stop pulling answers out of your arse.

....I have seen a bent WRX hood easily thrown like a frisbee......it 'aint 55 pounds, NO WAY

my carbon fiber hood weighs 8 pounds MAX..... now if you went from the steel hood to the cf you would see a lot of weight off, but not nearly as much from aluminum to cf

Agreed, on the steel to CF swap...

I find it VERY hard to believe your CF only weighs 8lbs. :o
Trigun001 08-23-2006 04:00 PM

tasq if you knew the answer in the first place why did you give me the whole shpell about searching. To tell ya the truth I did search it, but I kept getting weights of carbon fiber from stock not the actual weight so .... well thanks for tellin me the weight ne way.

i got that super top secret light weight carbon fiber :D but seriously 8lbs-ish
Crowder13 08-23-2006 04:46 PM

these hoods are extremely light ,my hood is chipped all over so im probly going CF but try the sti trunk dampers whatever pound that is
culturedetox 08-23-2006 04:53 PM

CF and AL hoods may weigh the same. but what if you want to ghost ryde da whip? want to do some break dancing on the hood? shyte, get yourself a CF hood!

whoever said the hood weighs 55 lbs needs to get hit with one... maybe an RS hood since the RS hood is not aluminum..and is heavier than the WRX hood... BUT, i still doubt it.

Carbon fiber hoods on the wrx look tacky most of the time. I will stick with my stock hood
FWD WRX 08-23-2006 11:56 PM

my aluminum hood and my old CF hood feels the same, but my new Seibon CWII is a little heavier
BurtonCR 08-24-2006 02:24 AM

Any carbon hood that is not made from prepreg and has a fiberglass inner skeleton is going to weigh in the 15lb range.

The lightest carbon hoods Ive seen offered for the impreza were from a member named PKzero. He was here around 2002 (before vendor status) and he was making FULL carbon hoods that weighed around 9lbs. No one has made a full carbon or lighter hood since.

Unless you paid 1500+ for a carbon hood I am positive it weighs 15lbs+

Go check out www.firstmolding.com
I had their full carbon fibre hood for version 8
that really weight about 8lbs(3.8kg).
Most carbonfibre hood weights almost the same as
the stock aluminum hood. ;)

OK ok ok I was retarded. This is the post I found regarding weight from Danny5 (member #13).
Take off 35 lbs by going to a carbon or aluminum hood.

I glazed RIGHT over the "or aluminum" part. I should have thought about the post for even a second...it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise the stock hood weighs not 55 lbs.
Trigun001 08-24-2006 11:10 AM

hahaha I think ill stick with the stock hood unless someone can find me a bamf hood that is absolutly clear with a clear hoodscoop and made out of a uv protectant material and comes standard with spf 50 on it.. it better be under 15 pounds too. OO better yet.. its made out of the material that those badass prescriptions glasses are made out of so when its really sunny out the whole thing just goes black.. then at night time ill rock a clear hood.

I see 5.0kg = 11lbs and it costs 150000 yen ~ $1,500

on a side note. The Firstmolding GT wing. Does that fit the stock wing holes. I used babelfish, but its still not translating into something definitive.

That would be awsome. cause it would go clear as you went into the shade. What if you parked in half shade half sun??  you'd get a split hood, lol
WRXDriftR 08-24-2006 12:43 PM

i carried my STi hood up the staircase holding it from the latch with only 2 fingers. this had the scoop and splitter attached as well.

i was waiting out the winter weather before i replaced my dented wrx hood. They both weight close to nothing!

Now Trigun is on to something...
Trigun001 08-25-2006 12:19 PM

Maybe I should commision a design on it... i can think of a couple great things about it. First you wouldnt need to wax it youd need to use window cleaner... second its badass as ****. cons are itll prolly be heavy, break easily, and allow to much heat into your engine. solutions to this could be spraying a protective sun coat on your engine, getting glass that can polarize completly, in different colors of course, using a plastic instead of glass. Lets work this one out guys hahahaha.

Yeah,5kg with a stock sti nose(heavy nose) without the
high sti nose it is really that 3.8kg light.
Once you see the quality of the actual hood, you may think it worth $1500. ;)
elsanto 08-25-2006 04:37 PM

i've had 2 cf hoods on my car 1 was a reverse cowl kaminari and DEFINITELY weighed more than the aluminum one.. and it was noticable when changing hoods.

then i traded that for a seibon CW style hood, which was much closer in weight to the stocker.

the kaminari felt more sturdy though fwiw and didnt crack ilke the seibon did
