WRX purchase on looks?
I personally saw the WRX sitting on the Subbie lot and thought, OMG, what kind of car is that. I didn't stop to look, though, as I was on my way home from test driving a bunch of other cars already. Rest assured, I went online to check it out! That's how I found out about the WRX and I ended up purchasing one.
Just curious if any of you guys with WRX's (on first glance) thought the WRX looked good.

I was kinda neutral when I saw the pics, but loved it from the minute I saw it in real life.

I though it was kinda ugly when I saw the first pics of it. Then I saw it up close and had a chance to sit in it at the NY Auto Show and I absolutely fell in love with it. Don't know why everyone thinks they're ugly, IMO they look better than most cars out there now.

I really didn't care for the sedan styling when I first saw the pics in print and online. I had never seen a wagon until I went to subaru.com on a whim to check the WRX pricing out. I felt better about the wagon styling than I did the sedan, but still wasn't sure about the front of the car (well, except for the scoop :D )
I felt better about the car seeing it in person. Of course, all apprehension went away as soon as I pulled out of the lot on the test drive.
Now that I've gotten used to the front of the car, I really like the styling, especially with the front license plate removed. Now I just have to get the windows tinted, 17's, etc... :)

I agree with the above. Early pics didn't do it justice! I don't know if I'd love it, sight unseen, in a dealers lot, but it certainly has grown on me!

I loved the way my WRX looked from the beginning.
| bobafett | 11-01-2001 07:25 PM |
Ya, sometimes I'll see it in pictures and think, eh, it's an ok looking car. Sometimes it even looks kinda screwy :P But, in person, I've never had a bad/negative thought about mine (and it's just stock)! Sometimes I'll catch it at the right angle as I'm walking by...be it the light or whatever, but I think, OMG my car rules :D
I'm not sure if I like the wagon as much as the sedan. It just looks like it has a huge arse.
Thanks for the opinions guys :)

i was a little upset about the styling at first.... i prefered the old styling much more, until i saw a blaze yellow WRX at the morgantown Subaru dealership.... love at first sight.... i swear, when i'm out of college, i'm going to have one..... :D

Heck no! I did not purchase the WRX on its looks!! On value per HP/Torque, yes! I think the headlights look like it was from a Dodge Neon. The car would look much better with rectangular styled headlamps. As for the performance, it can't be beat. If anything I purchased the WRX for the turbo and bov sound.
| bobafett | 11-01-2001 11:21 PM |
Well at least you're not insecure about driving around a ****ty looking car :P I personally would not purchase a car if I didn't like the look of it. I don't care if it does 0-60 in 3 seconds...Ok, maybe I would care :D
| gabedude | 11-01-2001 11:23 PM |
I still think the WRX is ugly as hell, the interior sucks, and the build quality is about as good as a chevy. But I bought it for the performance.

Well the first wrx I saw was a GC body style when I was in Japan. I've loved that thing and started saving money to buy a 2.5RS when I got back to the states. I knew that was the only car that would ever do it for me. Then sometime in August 2000 I started hearing rumors on this forum that the WRX was coming to the states. I was like w00t! WRX for me.
Then I saw a picture of it on the net. I nearly threw up. I felt ill. They took the awesome looking GC body style and made it neon. I started to look hard at other options. Mainly a used rx-7.
The moment I knew I'd be getting a WRX happened around Feburary this year. I went to a Japanese Subaru dealership and saw a fully decked out STI 7. That thing was beautiful in person and the drive the dealer took me on was soo damn wild...I was completely and utterly hooked.

I don't think that the build quality is as good as a chevy. I'm sure it is a whole lot better. Atleast the interior looks better in my opinion compared to a camaro. There isn't a huge bump in the passenger floor.

I actually liked the interior. The lights, well, that's a different story. I bought the car because of it's performance potential not it's looks or the way it performed stock.

Mine's ugly, no doubt. Hopefully some new wheels and alittle tint will soften her up a bit
| bobafett | 11-02-2001 09:35 AM |
for those of you who think it's ugly. Why don't you consider the headlight replacement upgrade. I don't know exactly what it's called. But, it turns the large headlight into 2 smaller/separate ones. And then for the fog lights, you can get the cover plates. That's not a very huge price to pay, considering it pretty much changes the whole look of the front IMO. I kind of like the idea myself, even though I like the stock look.
I need to check on prices and where to get that stuff today :)
Oh, ya and btw...I think the RS looks like hot $h1t too. :D

VRROOM
I got hooked on the WRX when I heard it in the commercial. I like the little growly sound it has. The looks to me are also excellent. Sure, at first glance you could say Neon, but with the fender blisters and the fogs, it looks more like the scrappy kid on the playground who will beat you up if you try and push him around.

Your right I would love to upgrade the headlights. I want the Japanese HID headlights. Problem is that it costs like $1900+!

I always loved the styling of the old 2.5 RS and when I saw the first picture of the restyled Impreza for 2002 (at this time I owned a 93 Legacy Turbo) I was like ewwww W T F is that?? But then I read the specs, and my mind started to change :D My Legacy was starting to become a little worn out and I wanted another subaru which would be at LEAST as fast as my Legacy. Well eventually i saw one in person at the Philadelphia Auto Show, they had a silver one, and I was like IS THIS THE SAME CAR?? In person it was like a whole different beast! I must have sat in the car for like 10 minutes and spent another 20 walking around it. That week I went to the dealer and put adeposit on a silver WRX.
:)
The rest is history! Vroom!

Why did I buy my WRX? I saw a WRX in a parking lot, and then I KNEW that I have to have this car. No knowledge of performance, price, etc. That was way back in March.

You mean the morette's? Ewwww. That's even worse. The Sti ones are nice but not worth the money. I'll stick with what I have. Just did the HID upgrade and am getting some Jun eyelids. After that I'll concentrate on the motor where it does the most good.

What is the HID upgrade? I thought for HIDs you had to replace the whole assembly. I am curious about this because even if I had the money, I don't think I could spend $1800 on headlights:eek:

Since I am known as the 'Subaru nut' at work (maybe the huge WRX posters and model on top of my monitor, along with various Subaru stickers give it away), I have had 2 people come to me recently asking about the WRX. I don't PUSH the car, but I talk very positively on it. Both of these people ended up buying OTHER cars (one bought an MP3, the other an RSX Type S). BUT, neither of them bothered to DRIVE a WRX beforehand. Both mentioned that they didn't like the WRX because of the headlights.
These kind of people don't deserve a WRX anyway. They were buying mainly for looks, not understanding the TRUE strengths of the WRX. It's truelly a tuner's car. Do I love the headlights on my WRX? No. Do I give a crap once I get behind the wheel, fire up the BPM MKiii, and bark all four? Hell no.
HIDEOUS, I say...HIDEOUS!

same here... although i'd happily give up 2" of headroom for that slightly lower roofline. just a thought.

When I was shopping around for a new car, I showed my gf a pic of the Audi A4 and the wrx and she was like "THE WRX!" basically because it had a lot more personality and uniqueness to it, kinda like a pug or a bulldog. Then I read what it was all about and I was sold.
Audis, BMWs, Mercedes... they all look the same to me, like large electric shavers.

WRX YAY!
God, I must say that the MY02 imprezas look awsome! The WRX looks great! My little bro just bought one... j/k . I still love my 2.5 rs, but you gotta love looking over that little power bulge on the hood. The fender flares make the car look great and I loved the new design. Some people say it looks to cutesy, a little more feminine, from the bug eyed head lights to the bump on the trunk. Some people say it doesn't look as aggressive as the older body style.
Personally, I think that the new Impreza body was a great idea. In day light in the WR blue there is no question what kinda car that is. The shape of the body is awsome and the rounded back still looks great. At night the car's "bug-eyed" tailights seem to transform, and I think that the head lights take on an "angry" expression. Basically, day or night the Subaru sticks out, (good for onlookers and subaru fans, bad if they are a cop... )because not many cars look like it.
Its a refreshing change from squinting out in the distance trying to distingish are car thats coming or going. But the Impreza's new shape is a fun "little" statement. Oh well, but thats just my feeling...

Kevin,
I'm no photoshop expert, but here is what your car would look like with a 2inch chop and shaved rear door handles (European coupe look-alike styling)... I suppose I could spend more time on it and clean it up a bit, but this should prove it's purpose just fine... waddya think?
