Anyone else auto-x ed at gt live there car. part 1

west 12-20-2004 05:59 PM

Anyone else auto-x at the jgt live?
Like the title said I was wondering who else was there on Sunday. It was my first auto x and thought I did well considering what I so on my times. I was able to pull a 55.7 as my best. The timer guy told me I was very consistent on my first set of four laps I did. He told me I was the second fastest subaru there.....cool! Team blew or somthing, very nice family, gave me a card and told me they were impressed. there best was 54.xxx a rather huge difference considering the track setup. I can't remember the name of the auto cross group but if anyone else can chime in you will see quite a few subaru's were there.
I even watched a guy in a silver sti just going wild. He had a hard time keeping his car straight. I have a small vid my wife took of my last lap of the run. It shows how close I came to catching a highly moded acura if anyone is intrested. the rest of the event was cool but alot of walking.
those jgt cars ar fast!

How do you catch someone in autox? Autox is typically not wheel-to-wheel racing.
How do you catch someone in autox? Autox is typically not wheel-to-wheel racing.
They had sent two cars out at once, and then both cars did 4 consecutive laps, I caght the guy in front of me by the end of lap 3.
I would call the precautions a little lax but it was kind of nice to see a change in this overly litigious society we live in today.
It was a NASA sanctioned event.
makofoto 12-21-2004 12:33 PM

NASA organized the JGTC AX ... we offered to help ... but they wanted us to work a 4 hour shift ... to have the honor of helping them, after paying $50 for 8 laps. I gave them a bunch of advise on running a AX, designed a mini JGTC (CA Speedway) AX track for them ... but they wanted to do it their way ... which ended up being kind of cool ... although it took up too much time and was a bit dangerous. Cars ran four laps at a time ... two cars on the course at the same time ... so of course the faster exerperienced drivers were eating up the newbies. But it was a Fun Event ... so you just had to go with it. I was up against another SM Impreza in one of my three sessions ... and I just caught him at the finish on my last lap. Others would catch their prey early ... and have to slow down or even stop to let the other car get ahead ... but then they got to do extra make up laps. It was fun getting to do continuous laps, one was able to get in to a rhythm ... and it was easier on the clutch. They only had 4 course workers ... who sat in cars or chairs and were clearly not interested. But it was still great fun. I think TeamBlew Suby's had five or six of the top 10 spots ... including 2nd on both days. First, 3rd and 4th were running R compounds ... we all ran street tires. We had National drivers/Champs like Ken Motonishi, Will Kalman and Art Riner behind us. Some photos HERE

An autox course where folks are chasing down someone? Interesting concept. :)
buzz313th 12-22-2004 12:35 PM

Yeah... well it wasn't supposed to be like that... It was a result of the format that Nasa had us run.

It was two cars on course, sepertaed by 25 seconds. Each car ran 4 laps without stopping (they only had one timing gun), so if you were faster than the guy you were running with you could catch em. Then they would give you extra runs for every lap that you had to slow for traffic. It was very cool being able to run back to back. Knowing that after 3 laps you could overheat brakes and tires there was a little strategy there...

Edited because Tom was making fun of me.... :p

Wow, that IS a highly moddified Acura. They even put a Toyata Corrola GT-S body kit on it, that must have been a lot of work.

Umm, that's not west in the picture - that's a picture of another Subie that Mako took...different run altogether.

Yeah thats me.... chasing down the corolla. I'de like to say he was a great driver, but he sucked. He kept trying to drift infront of me. Kinda hard to drift on such a narrow course.

I see now that I came in 19th over all on Sunday. I suppose thats not bad. I sort of gave up on posting because of the negative response to my poorly writing skills. I guess I need to give some pictures to get back to the point: Fun! Lighten up guys!
My car is the typical black and gold STI with cobb bars frount/rear and tein s-tech springs. Thats it so far. I did run with everything still in the car including the sub box and the baby seat if that means much. My major mods are mostly the eclypse stereo (2454) and the sway bars. I did well and I had fun.

19th is good ... don't forget a bunch of folk ahead of you are either very experienced or had R compound tires ... or both!

Join up with us fellow AX'ing Suby's in TeamBlew ... and you will soon be kicking A$$. We now have something like 8 STI's out of about 40 members. Look us up before you start doing any performance mods ... so you don't end up in a class that you'll regret! ;)

Don't you people have enduros in your regions? Sac SCCA runs enduro once a year, Saturday you get 3 2 lap runs, then Sunday you get only 1 5 lap run (same course). And you get only 1 run because there can only be 1 car on course!

z3 COUPE " AUTO CROSSED, with his new Zeal V6s, but I havent heard from him since that day.........

makofoto 12-30-2004 11:35 AM

bemani ... we usually have 250 to 300 drivers ... so that wouldn't work.

This Fun AX was hosted by NASA. We, a SCCA club, tried to help them, but they wanted to do it their way.

z3 Coupe, aka Rocky, came in 10th out of 83 ... first time out with the new Zeal's ... which he loved.

West (and whoever else wants to join us for Autocrossing in Southern California) ... in order to make it easier to get into our over subscribed autocrosses ... you need to get a Points Card from CSCC, California Sports Car Club ... the Solo II division of Cal Club ... the Southern CA SCCA regional division.

Points Card Info

Points Card FAQ & Application Form

Cross out 2004 ... write in 2005. Note that you need to pick a sub car club. We hope you pick the Subaru TeamBlew Club!

Note that you need to send the Application to Gayle ... whose address is in the first LINK ... and not Tony Payne ... whose address is listed on the bottom of the Application.

TeamBlew is really the only one of these car AX car clubs that does things together as a club. Here are photos from our Dromo1 outing yesterday. Sensei Ken Motonishi, 3 times National STS Champ, dominated and happily gave us pointers:
