$0 Zero Cost Mod part 1

$0 Zero Cost Mod

OK maybe I am the last one to discover this ... or maybe you think it is stupid ... but in the interest of sharing experiences, here goes!

Every time I go to fill up the WRX, the gas cap, what to do with it, so that it does not "rest" on the paint (horror of horrors if I were to get any gasoline on the paint, or scratches from the gas cap threads resting up against the side of the body).

The "tether" is too short to loop it in any way with the fuel door. So my $0 zero cost mod was to snip the "tether" and now my gas cap is simply placed on the gasoline pump machine while I am gassing up.

That's all! Simple post. Cheers, GoodFinder :)

Jus don't forget it on the gas pump when your done, I see them up there all the time when I get gas.

he's not here

i just saw him drive off to a gas station to pick up something he forgot...

Remember, you'll throw a CEL if you forget to put the gas cap on. That should keep you from forgetting it on the pump.

I don't think that light-weight plastic cap is going to damage your finish, unless you repeatedly slam it into your body!!

Nah, his problem is common. I had the same issue the first time I went to pump my gas. The gas cord is not long enough to put anywhere, and I didn't want to have gas on the paint.

But it is long enough to hang over the lower screw of the gas lid. Try that. It works for me. :D
BrysImpreza 11-12-2001 11:26 AM

Notice those 2 brackets on the gas door, thats for hanging the gas cap while filling up, maybe it's not on the WRX but thats how I don't forget it on my 1997 Impreza.
Bry. :D

For some reason the WRX does not have the interior bracket on the gas door to hang the gas cap while you are filling up. That would be great if it did!

Hmm...
I just refueled yesterday... far as I can remember, there is some kind of bracket for holding the cap. I used to use it, but I must say that compared to my 1995 Impreza L, the bracket seem to be a little oddly designed... doesn't hold the cap as well as the one in my 95 L. Are there different versions of 2002 WRX in the US? Curious...

The best way I have found to avoid losing your gas cap is to hold it in your hand from the time you take it off until the time you put it back on. I do this and haven't lost a cap yet! ;)

Satrya, I don't notice any brkt for holding onto the cap. Really, there is one? I hate to have the gas cap resting on the body panel.

go to a salvage yard and get the clip that holds the cap from any car!
wrx182 11-12-2001 04:25 PM

it's long enough to hang over the metal prong piece that sticks off the opening end of the fuel door.

cditto's idea sounds good to me. :D

Well, it's not exactly an obvious looking bracket (like my 1995 Impreza L), but I always thought the fuel door was shaped such that no extra bracket is necessary. Granted, it doesn't stick there as well as the 1995 model. Here's a sketch I made to illustrate what I mean:

I usually jam my cap in the handle of the pump while i check the oil/clean my windows. Works well and i don't forget my cap. :)

There actually is a place for the gas cap to go while fueling. The cord will reach too. It was designed to fit by using the curved rim of the gascap. This presses onto the "thing" that sticks out of the fuel door. It fits perfectly, it was a littly hard to figure out where to put it the first time I got gas but it is there. Prolly even says in the car book that came with your car. N-E yall ever read that? :)

Good luck

I think you're describing the same placement as my illustration a few posts up... :)
To my surprise, it is not in the manual (at least not in mine).
hkwan 11-15-2001 01:06 PM

Wow, satrya, I like your drawing - thank you very much.

This design will somewhat force the end of the gas cap to scrap off dirt from the inside of the fuel door and eventually the dirt will fall into the gas tank, don't you think? The back of the fuel door is always dirty because it is not seal from outside environment.
brickdawg 11-15-2001 02:19 PM

What I was describing is not like the illustration. You use the actual rim of the gas cap and place it on the thing that sticks out of the fuel door. It goes on at an angle to the door. Not flush.

 What? You mean you don't clean behind the fuel filler door? :lol I've been using that method and never thought about the dirt. I guess I'll have to start cleaning behind that door.

This is what I've been doing for the past 8 years - I grab a bunch of paper towel from the gas station, I wipe the nozzle of the gas refill gun before sticking it into the gas tank (you will notice the paper towels turn black instantly). Then I stick the bunch of paper towel underneath the nozzle. I always top-off and that will catch the drippage. Then, before I put the gas cap back on, I wipe the gas cap as well. Extra total time = 30 additional seconds. No big deal.

Too bad, those live in Oregon will have to allow the gas station operator to handle the gas refill, banging the gas cap on the body panel, dripping gas all over the car and all:lol: .
128d 11-15-2001 04:26 PM

It's not in my manual either, how do they expect anyone to know it?

Well, if you guys had GC8s, then your cas cap wouldn't be tethered and there would be a nice little bracket in the door that you just screw the cap into. So ha! Old school rules!

This well makes up for the lack of a turbo. :lol
Ghomer1 11-15-2001 08:39 PM

I just wanted to let you know that reading this mod is very dissapointing for me...I dont have the damn tether, so I can't do anything. And I love 0$ mods too.lol

Hmm.. I've never thought about that.... then again, it makes me paranoid and want to bring a chinois or some kind of filter to cover the gas refill nozzle with....

of course, your idea of wiping the nozzle with tissue prior to refueling is not bad at all... maybe more practical than carrying a chinois in the trunk... :)
