Check out my ghetto paint job! I painted the car in my garage yesterday...
I'm in the process of preparing a rally car and layed down the first color yesterday...figured I'd post pics to make you hardcore style guys cringe in pain as you look at the ghetto conditions that I'm blowing down paint in. ;)

Two reasons...first, photographic ability. It will be a twotone white/blue paintjob with the blue on top. Kris (webkris) noticed in a lot of photographs of rally cars that the top of the car is exposed perfectly but the bottom of the car loses definition in the shadows. So, by painting the color on top, white on bottom and placing high contrast sponsorship decals in the white you'll get a much better photograph and the sponsorships will show up much better.
Second, dent repair. Although white gets dirty very quickly it is the easiest color to hide dings and dents. Also, the color I purchased is "MSA Fleet White" which is specifically designed for industrial and fleet applications for trucks that get dinged and repaired a lot. :D

I know it's none of my business, but it would be really good if you could borrow a respirator from someone. I gave mine away or I would send you mine.
I am 38 years old and cannot play with my 3 year old without getting short of breath. There is stuff in that paint that will kill you, plain and simple.
As an I-club member, that makes you a friend. I wish you the best in your racing and hope you have a blast doing it.
I am truly sorry if I overstepped my boundaries.
Soon to be fellow racer.

Pending weather I'll be finishing the front bumper stripping and primer wet sanding on Friday evening and blowing down the blue on Saturday. I won't be putting on the ClubRally visual ID pack until my suspension shows up though...it'd be totally lame to have the full ClubRally decal pack on a 100% bone stock Impreza L. :p

Not overstepping at all and I thank you for your concern. :) Yes, I should have a respirator on...but the limited budget currently dictates my setup. I'm spraying down MSA acrylic enamel with reducer instead of thinner; a combination which isn't that toxic (relatively speaking comparing to other paints). Also, the exhaust fan in the back of the garage and the wide open door gets a nice solid breeze pushing the fumes out. So it looks much worse than it actually is.

I'll have a complete 50/50 (looks good at 50 MPH from 50 feet away) paintjob howto put together once I'm finished. In a nutshell:
1) Use 60 grain dry sandpaper on a handheld electric sander ($20) or, if you can afford it, random orbit sander with dust trap ($150). Sand through the clearcoat until you hit paint. Here I am prepping Kris' rally Neon...notice the "white" dust. This is clearcoat dust...when the dust turns red, you've hit paint:

2) Use 220 grain dry sandpaper on the same sander to smooth out the scrapes from the 60 grain and remove the swirl marks. Hitting the white electrically applied factory primer is good...hitting metal is bad but not Earth shattering.
3) Drill holes and use a dent puller to yank out huge dents. Sand to bare metal then use a ball hammer to whack the holes back in. Sealer should then be used on the inside to reduce the chances of rust (I forgot to do this because I suck).

4) Start Bondo body work where required. Scrape up with 60 grain and apply Bondo. Form Bondo with 100 grain. Smooth with 220 grain. 220 grain still leaves a rough surface but this is good...we want a hardcore tough paintjob, not a show paintjob.
5) Use Bondo Finishing Putty to fill in all the air bubbles in the Bondo. It's impossible to apply Bondo 100% smooth when you first start working with it.
6) Prime all areas to be painted with Duplicolor Filler Primer or Plasti-kote Filler Primer. The filler primer is thicker, runs less and fills in the rough spots from sanding. I coat the entire car and then immediately start over from the beginning with a second coat while the first coat is still tacky.
Let the car flash for 15 minutes until a dry skin forms over the primer and then repeat the two medium coats again. Let dry overnight, preferably a week or two to bake in the sun.
7) Wet sand primer with 600 grain.
8) Thoroughly wash car with automotive car wash fluid and tar/wax stripper.
9) Spray down walls of painting area with water to reduce dust. Let car dry, use cotton lint-free towels.
10) Use Prep-All or any other alcohol based paint prep solution to remove all residue and dust.
11) Fire up compressor to full capacity at 60 PSI blow. Mix paints. MSA acrylic enamel requires a 8 parts paint to 4 parts reducer to 1 part hardener.
12) Use cardboard or wood to test your spray pattern. It takes a while to get the proper air pressure to air flow to spray pattern mix.
13) Blow down color just like the primer...coat the entire car with a light to medium coat so you can still see primer. Go back and do the entire car again immediately with a medium coat so you can't see primer anymore.
14) Let car flash for 10 to 15 minutes until a skin forms and is just barely tacky...if you press your finger will get wet. Spray down car again with two medium coats.
This should be enough, let dry with an exhaust fan overnight. Move car outside the next day and let bake in the sun.
Yes, that's the quick and dirty version! :D

Second Roy, paint is a killer. Get you a real mask. Make yourself a postive air system. Today's paints are even worse on the lungs and "nerves".

I'll third on the paint thing...
I use a lot of spray cans...bad news...
I can tell the difference when I've been too lazy to put the respirator on...I ALWAYS wear it when doing any sort of bodywork (30 year old porsches usually are painted with lead paint...)
get the kind with the replaceable cartridges..

If you don't mind me asking, how much is this little enterprise setting you back? I've always been interested in building a rally car and running it - I'm just interested in what it takes.
Looking good!

What happened to the car that resulted in this:

Did some gang come by and shoot your car to hell and back?

Oh, the dent puller I've seen just barely welds a little rod to the panel to pull it out, I haven't seen one that drills.

Suction cup dent puller for large dents that haven't creased or formed sharp edges:

Sliding 2 to 5 pound dent puller...drill into the car body, screw the tip into the hole and slide the weight back as hard as you can to yank the dent out a square inch or two at a time.

Simple...the front headlights remove easily...it's just four bolts and then a single screw and clip on the corner markers. The taillights are held in place with six or eight nuts as well as a ton of silicone sealant. To remove the taillights you have to heat up the rear end with a heat gun and pry the lights out. Not worth it.

p.s. if you took the time to tape the taillights why didnt you just remove them????? j/k
