Headlight Mod Alternative? part 1

Headlight Mod Alternative?

I really like the looks of the headlights without the orange bulb cover, but I am apprehensive about the long term effects of taking apart the lights to remove it. With my WRX being silver, I really don't feal a need to paint the chrome surround or anything, I just want to get rid of the orange look. Has anyone found a way of removing the bulb cover without splitting the lamps open?

Sorry if this has already been covered, but everything I have found deals with taking the lamps apart to do this.

I read about someone taking a small scissors or pliers and cutting or breaking the orange cover into little pieces and then shaking them out of the headlight assembly.

i've had the headlight mod done for over a year now... and taken my headlight apart twice..

once to take orange condom off.. once to paint the housing... no leaks at all :)

i used a hairdryer and the only annoying thing is the time... gotta be patient.. but i really didnt want to throw em in the oven hehe

its not as easy as it sounds though. the bulb cover is pretty tough and its quite easy to scratch the shinyt reflector stuff.

LttLDGN: Did you use anything to hold the glue so that it didn't seal back into place by the time you get to the next section?

Yeah, I didn't think it sounded very easy either.

Once I get my silvervision bulbs I ordered I'm going to take mine apart with a heat gun.

Chris,

Use the oven. It makes it a lot easier!! Do a search, I know I outlined my oven procedure in the past.

Chris:

I did my headlight mod about a week ago. I baked em' in the ole oven. I was nervous, no use lying about it. It all worked out. Just take your time and make sure the black sealant is nice and gooey before you start pulling the headlight assembly apart. I took the amber cover off once headlights were apart and put in Silvervision bulbs. I didn't paint anything because, like you and many others, I liked the clean look w/the silver car color. When you put the headlight assembly back together make sure you have a tight fit. The goo drys up quite fast. Next mod is clear front side light covers with more Silvervision bulbs or similiar.

Here's a closeup pic of the new bulbs, no amber cover:

Thanks for the pics and info. Now if I my silvervision bulbs would just show up I can do the mod. :)
JePereza WRX 04-15-2002 02:19 PM

I finally finished the headlight mod. It's definitely worth all the trouble. It took me about 4 hours. I'll post some pics soon.
Iceberg Slim 05-09-2002 05:55 PM

Quick question.

Where are the bolts that hold the headlight in?

I could only find one but I still couldn't get it out.
JePereza WRX 05-09-2002 09:31 PM

Are you talking about the bolts holding the headlight onto the body? There are three, two in the front and one on top. Or are you talking about the two screws that hold the black base of the headlight to the clear cover of the headlight? They are found on the back of the headlight. Make sure those are out.

Here's that pic I promised:

in my garage, next to my needle nose pliers, there are a couple of wire/tin snips that appear to be easily capable of reaching inside the bulb hole. would this be any easier to cut that sucker up than the lens removal method? just curious. all the folks saying they were afraid to do it and then did it just fine are giving me confidence that i can be a successful moron too.;)
Neil Wallerstein 05-10-2002 08:09 AM

- nope -

I spent an hour trying to cut mine up. I gave up and and used the oven method to get inside the lights. It only took me an hour to do both and I was taking my time..
ATX25RS 05-10-2002 11:08 AM

have you thought about a dremel tool?...instead of baking them...if you dont feel comfortable dont do it because you probably will break something.

MAD REX 05-10-2002 11:28 AM

I tried sticking them in the oven but it didn't work.

I even did like 7 minutes at 225, the goo wasn't melting.

I'll try again this weekend
H8YNERS 05-10-2002 11:37 AM

Mad Rex: Some oven's temps differ. It took me about 17mins each headlight to get the goo to soften. I probably would of been better to leave them in even a couple of mins more for the goo to be easier to separate. I have a gas oven. I think 7mins is not long enough regardless of what oven. I think from the posts I've read on i-club, the avg time is about 12mins. Hope this helps. Don't give up. I know it's a little unnerving putting your headlights in the oven and so the natural tendency is to pull them out of there too soon. ;)

How do you know when the goo is soft enough? Should you be able to pull them apart kinda easily or do you have to use an Exacto knife?
MAD REX 05-15-2002 03:31 PM

Okay I tried again last night and was succesful :D

Looks much much much better IMO
Surf WRaX 07-07-2002 06:38 PM

i just did this mod on ONE of my headlamps using the "cut the orange cover to hell" method.

this method is not for the impatient. it took me about 1.5 hours and i got some scratches. i was cussing whoevers idea it was all along, but once it was finished, i was stoked.

i would recommened using tin snips. i started with some dikes and it took 1/2 hour to only get a few millimeter chunks out. some tin snips that barely made it through the whole sped up the process.

again, i would not recommend doing the cutting method unless you have some good tools, are good at working in tight spaces, and have some patience.

now i have to do the other lens...
