Banderas to play Senna??
Spanish actor Antonio Banderas has bought the rights to make a film of the life of triple Formula One motor racing champion Ayrton Senna, it was reported on Wednesday. Though no actors, directors or location have yet been chosen, Banderas' enthusiasm for the Brazilian hero, who died in a horror crash at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994, was evident when he spoke to cinemagazine.com.
"He was tormented and had predicted his own death," said Banderas, the star of Hollywood blockbusters such as Zorro, Evita and Spanish films like Pedro Almodovar's Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down.
"There are many things people just don't know about him and his family are the only ones who can truly tell the tale of his life," said Senna's sister Vivianna, who is in close contact with Banderas on the project.

I, for one, don't see anything wrong with this. I'm not a big Banderas fan at all, in fact I don't think I've ever liked a movie he was in, but I don't think he's a terrible actor, and he does have a passing resemblance to Senna. If the film is done accurately, and is an entertaining show otherwise, I think it would be great.
Finally my girlfriend could know why I'm always raving about Senna ;)

I think that he's a fairly talented actor (ever see Evita?) and I hope that he does a good job with this.... I'd love to see a movie about Senna's life.

as long as it's well-done and authentic (and not at all like Driven) I would love to see a movie about Senna.

So would I, as long as they don't put too much "racing" in it. What this world doesn't need is another Driven.

"Grand Prix" has yet to be topped, nor will it.

I agree this word does NOT need another Driven. However this world need many many many more racing movies :D So I would totally be in favor of racing in the show. But I don't want to see a little kid whining about how much his life sucks because he has to race for a living, or F1 cars crashing and exposing tube frames, or a damn love story thrown in with some fair looking slut that bangs all the racers just to make them all mad at each other, and I definitely don't want to see a 2 minute long straight that includes 3 downshift to accelerate in it. These are the things that were wrong with Driven.

I'll skip that movie because of Senna, not Banderas.

Banderas stirkes me as quite a bit heavier than Senna who was much slimmer.
Senna was my favorite F1 driver and I was deeply shocked when he crahsed and very upset when I later learned, along with the rest of the racing world, that he had died.
I have a limited print painting, number 44 out of 850, of Senna racing in first place at Monte Carlo in 1990; he won six times at Monte Carlo during his 10-year career. In 1990, he led from start to finish. The painting was created by British artist Tony Smith.
The picture hangs from my office wall and has proven to be a good conversation starter for visitors since most Americans that come through my door (I'm British) have little or no knowledge of F1 or its drivers.
Cheers!

Why would you have a problem with Banderas playing Senna? He is obviously a fan, and is very passionate about F1 and Senna's life, in addition to the fact that he is already a good actor. Sounds like a perfect match to me.

I don't recall saying I had a problem with Banderas playing Senna. The fact that Senna's sister is involved leads me to believe he [Banderas] would do a good job.
My only comment that could be taken as negative, and it was more of an observation really, was that I felt Banderas to be heavier set than Senna.
I agree with you that it sounds like a good match.
Cheers!

Ayrton Senna was one of the most brilliant drivers to ever grace this planet.
That's fine if Banderas is playing him but please please please keep his naasty wife Melanie Griffith out of it...
She should star in a movie with Anna Nicole Smith and it could be called "brainlock: the mentally challenged..."

Yeah a lot of people bang on Banderas and say he's a bad actor, but he's not. He just knows when to be serious and when NOT to be serious. I think the movie will be OK. I wouldn't worry about the weight either, because actors can bulk up or starve themselves and slim down. He was pretty thin in that movie with woody harrison.
I would worry bout the accent. The Brazilian accent is quite a bit different than the Andalucian accent.

I don't see how this is possible considering that Bernie Eccelstone told the Driven crew and Silverster Stallone to piss off when they asked for permission to make the movie about the F1 world.

Yes... but this is Antonio Banderas! Even Bernie can't say no to him! ;)

Evita was after Assassins wasn't it? That and Mambo Kings (that boy can SING!)
Both were better (acting-wise) than Assassins.

i don't see how this movie would fly...
for one, the movie probably would have to make FIA look bad because of Aryton's believe that he was screwed out of a title because of FIA... Berrnie ain't gonna be happy with something like that...

I don't think it would fly with audiences either. As much as I'd like to see one, a movie about F1 probably wouldn't go over well in the US. There just aren't that many F1 fans over here, although I think the numbers are growing.
If it ain't one a them there movies about sum stock car racer rubbin' eez way around a fast oval trayack, Cletus and Trixie won't go see it.
I would guess a majority of American movie-watchers would say, "Who the hell is Senna??"

13th warrior! I forgot all about that one. He was very good in that!
Well guys... nobody's mentioned one thing yet: Nobody said the movie was going to be in English or for American audiences. A movie like this would do phenominally well in Brazil and much of South America, I'd bet. We'd probably be lucky if we got a subtitled version here :)

Last time I checked, there were at least a couple of markets for movies outside of the US. ;) And even ones where there are likely to be more F1 fans!
I think the movie has potential. The information I read indicated that it would focus on the last few months of his life, leading up to his crash at Imola. If his family is involved, you can believe that it won't be sensationalistic, as they have been very careful to protect his name since his death.
Plus, like Jamie, my wife will go see ANYTHING with Antonio Banderas in it!
