Ok, so I did the grill mod and finished with bondo, then the Dupli color engine enamel cast coat iron to repaint....however...for me...it is too grey.
Does anyone know the factory paint color for that part?
Cheers!

Don't know the factory paint code but ESEMES might might be able to help you out. He did my grill and the paint job was dead on.

I used the cast coat iron as well, but I then ended up painting it satin black and it looks much better.

From the factory it's not painted but molded plastic.

ok I read on another thread you can use Rusto Matel Flake Black and its a nearly perfect match.

I am planning on doing this mod this weekend, and just spent about half an hour at Meijer trying to find a paint that I thought would match well.
Ended up with Dupli-color Auto Spray, Viper Graphite EDSCC4140. It comes in the smaller cans. I sprayed it onto a sheet of paper, let it dry, and compared it to the grill plastic, and I would say that it's at least a 95% match, possibly 100%. That includes color and texture.

Look again. It is black plastic that has been painted with a metallic dark grey paint.

I painted it that grey color and then repainted it flat black as it was too grey. I am now going to paint it JBP to match the rest of my car.

Use Bright Metallic Black Rustoleom from Home Depot. It matches perfectly. It looks totally like you waxed your stock grill. It is black with a tiny bit of metallic like stock.

Hey can you guys give me a link to a post that shows you how to do this de badged grill mod for the 04 and up WRX. The only one I can find is the post of the guy that wants to charge you to do the mod for you but I know it isn't that hard to do. I just want a better explanation of the whole bondo part of it. Also what is the easiest way to cut out the middle plastice piece. Im not sure if you guys realize this but if you do this mod and then go get the grill painted the same color as your car but keep the mesh black it will look exactly like the Leberal grill for the 04 WRX that costs $499!!!! It is a Japan part.

Yeah but that was just to paint it right, what did you use to fill in the hole on the bottom part of it when you cut it out? Did you fill in the top part at all since it is a much bigger hole? What did you use to cut it out?

i used low-gloss black engine paint for my grill, headlights and mirrors.
if you cut too deep on the lower portion and get a hole, i epoxied a piece of plastic behind the hole, then filled with bondo w/hair, sanded then used regular bondo to fill in the small imperfections

1) What is the difference between the bondo with hair and without? What difference does the fiber glass hairs make in it?
2) Also what did you do about the hole on the top, did you just leave it alone?
3) What did you use to cut out the badge a hack saw?

1. Not sure, I used bondo without fiberglass hairs in it.
2. Left it alone... You can't see it anyway, unless you are looking for it.
3. I used a dremel with a 90* angle attachment and cutoff wheel for a rough cut, then used the sanding wheel attachment to remove the leftover material and smooth it out.

1. added strength because of the hole. not that you need much
2. left it alone. can't really see it.
3. i've used a utility knife (less sanding/filing) and a sawzall (more filing/sanding)

Awesome thanks, do you think I will be ok with just the regular bondo?

Just make sure you don't take off too much material and leave a hole in the bottom of the grille. Like I said, I was fine with regular bondo. I was very careful not to make any holes in the grille, just remove the pillar.

Awesome, I am going to have a dealer paint it after I do it so it will match my Silver body.

Quick question, after sanding the bondo part down do you have to sand the whole grill before painting it? Also do you have to primer the entire thing or should the dark paint that matches the grill cover everything up including the bondo without primer? Also I would like to do it for now and keep it black but I am planning on getting my front end repainted and getting the grill painted to match my Silver paint in about a month should I just wait and do the cutting/ bondo my self and leave the primer/sanding to the body shop guys?? Let me know what you guys think thanks......

Self etching primer for plastics
primer whole grill then sand enitre grill with 600 grit
Rustoleum color is "bright metallic black" It looks EXACTLY like stock when sprayed
To get rattle can paint right you have to shoot it in medium thin coats to get gloss correct.
let dry 20 min between coats, and spray 9 to 10 coats.
put on car after dry and let day to day engine heat cure the paint.
after a couple of day, remove grill and wet sand with 1000 grit and then polish with rubbing compound, following up lastly with a good polish/wax
Looks [emailprotected] good when done like this and drys rock hard.
I have done 2 suby grills with this method and both have turned out spectacular.

Kick @$$!!!!!! Thanks for the info that is exactly what I was looking for. I think I am going to prep it and do all the sanding/primering and have the body shop paint it to match my paint. It will look NICE!

Glad I could help. Just remember:
Use GREAT FUGG!N PRIMER if you use rattle can paint. It is NOT worth saving the extra $3-5 for walmart primer. Also if you want it to last forver, clear coat it with good automotive clear coat then sand and wax.
Also it will look nice without the wet sanding/polish/wax, these last time consuming steps mean the difference between people saying "oh, you cut and painted your grill" to people saying "where did you buy your grill?"
