17's or 18's on a WRX
So I'm torn between 17in and 18in rims. Yes, yes, I know that 18's add more weight, rotational mass, yadda yadda. Forget all that, that's why I'm posting here.
Hypothetical Situation:
If money were no obligation, and 17in and 18in rims performed EXACTLY alike, which would you get? 17in with fatter tires, or 18in with lower profile tires? What looks better? WHY????
TIA

18"s look better, more wheel less tire. I went with 18"s.
Also running 17"s with tires that are not the right size will mess up your speedometer, and it looks funny.

Well, under those conditions, of course 18! They look better on the wrx. On the GC8 however, they seem a tad big.

Go 18"
I have a silver WRX that is stock except for 18" Rota Subzeros.
I couldn't be happier with my decision. The car looks great.
But more importantly, the handling is so much better than stock
it's shocking. I have springs but haven't installed them yet.
In fact, I'm not 100% sure that they are going on....the gap
isn't bothering me and the handling is so good, I almost don't
want to mess with it. Anyway, go for the 18's and I bet you
won't be disappointed.
BTW, the Rota Attacks above are pretty sweet too (almost as
sweet as my Sub Zero's!!!!) :p

i went with 17" . i like the having a little more rubber. i agree that 18's look better and the fact that with 18's the more square sidewall of the smaller tire will bite concrete a little more but i wanted a little more cushion there for mild off roading and the occational curb(they move i swear). with a 17 and a little lowering the car will look just beautiful. with out the lowering there is too much gap. but the car needs to be leveled out anyway. so i say put some 17's on it a lower it reasonably and you get a happy medium.
also think about this some 17's look bigger than others, depends on depth and if the spokes go to the edge of the rim or if ther is a good sized lip on it. i saw a set of 18's on a wrx once that i had to have a closer look cuz they looked like 17's at first glace, just because the lip was so thick and the spokes were so small.
got run-on?
sorry

17's look too small on a wrx. 18's dont allways have to hurt accelaration. You have to take in consideration, wheel size, design, weight, along with the tires weight. A wheel may weigh more, but if all that weight is near the center, the rotational interia is not going to be nearly as effected as if the weight was at the outer edge. I see so many people say they wont go 18 because of the extra weight, then they go and slap on some 22.5 lb 17in P7's on their car. The 18' subzero is 18 lbs. Thoug it would not be as strong as the P7 speedline, its cheap enough to just pick up another if it bends. Thanks for listening to me rant.

wow
lots of replies! thanks for your input!
i might as well tell you my "plan" then. i have a carbon-fiber hood that i got for a killer deal. now, those that have a problem with the 2-tone look, i was in the same boat til i saw the most beautiful silver wrx. that changed my mind. anyways, i almost know for certain that i will need rims to match the cf hood, cuz the stock ones won't cut it. 18's w/o springs sounds nice, but 17's are good for racing! d'oh... gotta think about it some more. more input is always welcome! thanks again!

Hrmm I really don't like the 2 toned look but its your car so your choice.
On the wheel issue, I am in the same position so what I've finally decided is to go with a 17" wheel that have spokes that extend further towards the lip rather than curve inwards. An example of this would be the Rota Battles, it looks bigger than a normal 17". On the other hand I think the Attacks look smaller because the spokes curve inwards. Anyways good luck in your search, I honestly think wheels are one of the hardest thing to decide. Oh and what convinced me to get 17" was the weight issue. I forgot who posted it (I think Jorge), but there is an excel spreadsheet floating around that shows how much a wheel/tire weight increase does overall and its not pretty :P. I think its something like +5lbs on each corner is like adding 100lbs to your car.

yah, i actually saw that spreadsheet. i didn't think such little weight on each corner could have such an effect. however, i'm not gonna be racing all the time, so i wouldn't benefit from it all the time anyways.
here's a list of the wheels i'm considering:
SSR Competitions 17's or 18's (light, but expensive)
OZ Superleggeras 17's or 18's (pretty light, pretty cheap, and pretty
:) )
Volk Gram Lights 17's (pretty light IIRC, expensive)
if you have any comments on any of these wheels, please post. if they look uglier/better in person (cuz i've never seen any of these wheels in person), then please do post. all your comments have been greatly appreciated.

what profiles are you guys running? will 18's w/ 35 series profiles on a wrx dropped....lets say 1 1/2 inches rub?
how about 17's w/ the same drop and a 40 series profile?

i've been going thru the same debate. i've been digging thru all my old SCC mags and noticed that almost all the wrx's and evolutions where riding on 17s. also, in the hyper rev mag about 90% of the wrxs are on 17s.
that's gotta mean something...however, i'm still not sure what size to go for...doh!

Naylor, well, I don't think anyone can deny that 18s are more look than functional, but it does look good. Those magazine cars emphasize performance so naturally they will go 17.
Lawn: 225-40-18 or 225-45-17, I think many of run those on lowered cars just fine, assuming you have a sedan. Probably rub on a wagon.
dachoe: Yah well you can get the best of both worlds with lightweight wheels but $$$. But even so, I believe that even with equal weights, the 18s will still take a bit more to accelerate because the weight is more spread out. Oh and out of those wheels, I like the SSR best! The OZ SL Is also very nice at a very good price. I honestly am not too fond of the gram lights, IMO 5 thin spokes don't work too well for the WRX because its a bit "fat". The gram light PROs on the other hand would work nicely.

You callin Charlotte FAT??? ooooh man, she's not gonna like that!
lol, j/k.
I never actually considered that, but now that you mention it, the WRX is kind of hefty. Dangit, I gotta find people with these wheels.

What about winter and inclement driving conditions? Bigger = worse?
| M3sum | 08-09-2002 02:54 PM |
Yup definitely, its more harsh on your wheels too which is why most run either the stock wheels for winter or some other comparable wheel.
| dachoe | 08-09-2002 04:56 PM |
i plan on keeping my stock rims/tires for winter times, although we don't see much snow in souther california. i do go to tahoe/mammoth every winter, so i'll be using them still

I chose 18x7.5 with 225/40/18. My car is lowered approx. 1.5" no rubbing or any other issues.

Pretty much the same setup here. The 18s look so much better I think. Especially if money isnt an option, I'd go with the bigger wheels.
