Painting intake manifold, what color? part 1

sick1.8t 09-26-2005 12:47 AM

Painting intake manifold, what color?
i have the stock manifold reversed on my ej20g, and i'm trying to decide what color to paint it. keep in mind that sooner or later i will also be painting the valve covers (probably the same color), painting the timing belt covers, getting a aftermarket crank pulley and polishing the alternator (as far as cosmetics goes). the whole car is going to be show and go, all custom. so staying with factory-like mods is not a concern for me.
heres the motor:

heres the metallic red:

heres the metallic blue:

sti wrinkle red (on the pipes):

wrinkle black:

or polished (altough this would be pretty labor intensive):

or any other ideas?

ittybitty_STI 09-26-2005 12:33 PM

STI wrinkle red is sick!! i wanna do it
Lachlan 09-26-2005 01:29 PM

If it's for show I'd go polished--way bling bling.
SpaldingSpeed 09-26-2005 01:33 PM

What paint are you using..............and that wrinkle red on this IC pipes is the best job I've seen, who did that, what did they use???
coolblue05 09-26-2005 01:39 PM

polished, for sure.
OrlandoSTi 09-26-2005 01:47 PM

vipernj 09-26-2005 09:11 PM

chris-man 09-26-2005 11:23 PM

i said black..trying not to stand out.
sick1.8t 09-26-2005 11:28 PM

my only concern with the wrinkle red is that everyone will think that its an sti engine. its not. it should be more powerful than one when finished, but that only kinda makes it one :p
D-Speed 2.5 09-26-2005 11:59 PM

I'm a ricer at heart so that is the real reason that I painted my manifold wrinkle red. :)
JPaul99GT 09-27-2005 12:14 AM

newb ?
can i ask why you reversed the manifold without being torn to shreds? im just kinda confused, les you plan to use a pontiacesque ram-air setup.

thanks
Blue Rabbit 02 09-27-2005 12:51 AM

/\ less piping on a front mount setup. if you can get it over the alternator and under the hood.... yahtzee... less pipe means less spool time.
pleue 09-27-2005 03:01 AM

i like polished if for show. anyone know what the wrinkle gray would look like? gunmetalish or just like stock?
living4surf 09-27-2005 09:53 AM

i say go polished
John2.5RS 09-27-2005 04:36 PM

Polish it.
LOLSTi 09-27-2005 04:41 PM

red.5
Lachlan 09-27-2005 05:27 PM

are you doing the painting yourself? What about powder coating?
sick1.8t 09-27-2005 07:01 PM

after spending some time polishing the 2 of the cam gears by hand today, which by comparison are quite smooth already, i think polishing the whole manifold would just be more work than i can handle, especially considering that i can lay down a layer of paint in like 10 min.

yeah i'm going to use self wrinkling spray paint, it will come out just like the sti powdercoat. i'm also going to do the altenator bracket and valve covers the same color.

cliff notes: wrinkle red it is! won by 15% anyway.
sick1.8t 10-02-2005 11:50 AM

finished painting it up. i used krylon wrinkle paint from autozone.

Looks good, but why did you do the belt cover blue instead of red to match?
ChgoJay 10-02-2005 01:26 PM

Looks like your red didnt wrinkle that much. Whats up with that???
synernut 10-02-2005 03:43 PM

Mine didn't wrinkle very much either.

glilly 10-02-2005 07:55 PM

how would you go about polishing an intake manifold?

Greg
sick1.8t 10-02-2005 09:26 PM
Looks good, but why did you do the belt cover blue instead of red to match?
i didnt want to have a red overload.
Looks like your red didnt wrinkle that much. Whats up with that???
honestly none of those pictures are that good. it definetly did wrinkle. i tried doing the valve covers in the oven to get it to wrinkle more, and they have higher but not as tight wrinkles, so i left the manifold to air dry in an attempt to make it look more like the sti. apparently the vht stuff wrinkles better, but i didnt feel like paying %50 more and waiting a week to get it shipped to me. i'm pleased with it overall.
how would you go about polishing an intake manifold?
lots and lots of sanding. all the way down to like 2000 grit.
