Another Rally wheel question. part 1

Another Rally wheel question.
Hello,
SO, I've been planning mods and want a strong gravel type rally wheels. The stock wheel size for the forester is 16inches. Why does it seem 15inch rally wheels are so popular? I'm having a hard time finding a good looking 16. Are people going down a size?

Gravel rally tires are 15". So it's tough to fit them on a 16" rim. :)

15 inch rally wheels are so popular because true rally tires are not really made in anything larger than a 15 inch size. So most Subaru drivers go down to a 15 inch wheel so they can get rally tires.

Edit: You beat me to it.

What kind of car you are running will determine what 15" wheels you can run.
If you are in an RS, Impreza L, OBS or Legacy 90-04, you can run any stock Subaru 15" wheel. +-$250 a set for alloys, less for steelies.

If you are running a WRX, you'l need gravel rally wheels with at least a 50mm offset to clear the front calipers. Speedline, OZ, Compomotive and Enkei all make some proper gravel wheels..they'll start at +-$200 per rim. ;) Also, even with gravel wheels you *might* need to grind the calipers a bit or use spacers to get proper clearance.

If you are running an STI you'll need to down size your brakes to Group N 4 pots, WRX or RS's to get a 15" gravel wheel to clear..

Don't even consider running bigger than a 15", you'll go through many tires and rims.. One of the reasons the majority of rally tires are 15"s are due to the extra sidewall protection that the low pro street tires don't have. :D

there are some very strong OEM 15" wheels that will work just fine from subaru. their aluminum wheels are very good. Paul Eklund used them exclusively on his subaru rally cars w/no major problems.

what are your goals and how do you plan on using this car?

i am assuming that it is a forester you are driving?

Greg, not trying to flame, just help with the facts, but Paul runs 4 pot front brakes, H6 rears and various types of gravel rally wheels on his WRX Open class car.. Maybe on the old USX that had Leggy turbo brakes, but don't ever remember seeing that car with steelies on it in 5 years or so. On the RS rally car and the TS rally x/TSD factory or gravel rally wheels are on both of the cars.

But the factory steelies and alloys are good wheels for the money if they fit your car.. :D

yep, they make 16 and even 17 inch gravel tires (the 17's are more of a hard packed "clay" gravel surface tire usually). 15's are the most common because the sidewall helps soak up some of the nastyness. i sure couldn't imagine mounting lo-profile gravel tires the, the 15 inch pirelli's are already fairly hard. i'd assume that wrc cars have to run 15 inch to keep the brakes smaller? or something like that.
Fred 03-22-2006 03:59 PM

early 90's Legacy/ "regular Impreza" wheels work on my 2.5RS; they'll also fit the older Forester.

the new Forester XT has the same brakes as a WRX, so you'll have to find 15" wheels that fit the WRX.

...in case you're really that serious about this. (most people who post this kind of question aren't  )

If you just plan to play around in the dirt a little & call it "rallying," your stock wheels and some decent all-season tires will be perfect.

Team Dynamics makes 15" gravels that will clear a stock '02-05 WRX caliper. It's a +48 offset and it works great. JC_595 ran them on his PGT '04 WRX.

The extra sidewall protection is definitely wanted in a gravel tyre.

digitalpimp - You show me a GRAVEL 17" tyre and a team that's going to run that... :p

Christian - ROFLMAO fo sho'!!!
thechickencow 03-22-2006 05:38 PM

My th3's clear my 02 wrx brakes. It works if you have the right offset.

Most teams use 15 inch gravel wheels... Some wrc teams run 16inch gravel wheels... I wish my RS had 14inch wheels because rally tires are not light and they slow down a low horsepower car alot!

I would run 18" gravel tire. Because then you would be a strait pimpn balla on course.

So you guys are saying run a 15inch wheel on a forester. :disco:
RoundtheBend 03-22-2006 07:32 PM

That's what it sounds like.
I had 15" Speedlines on my FXT with zero problems. You should be fine.
recce02 03-23-2006 12:17 AM

15" inch gravel tires are used because there is more selection in compound and manufacture type. 16" rally tires are not as common and don't haave that many manufactures that provide them, I ran 16" in 2 rallies and that was dumb. we also have an STI that does have 17" gravel tires, pretty cool looking but not practical. Your best bet is to use 15" TIRES.
peace out

the key in my statement was used. but i should have been more clear and mentioned the USX.

he even made a mention if it in his interviews about his cars in GRM a few years ago. and i never said he used steeles, i said aluminum. he and i talked about this a few years ago just after he switched to the pale yellow WRX. the screaming yellow zonker had been seen many times on stages w/15" outback wheels.
digitalpimp 03-23-2006 12:38 AM

christian, that's it man, never sharing my pfchangs with you again EVER :P

yeah, i've never seen ANYBODY running anything other than a 15, but there ARE other sizes. but i could see using them for some rallyx tires or whatever like that.
JC_595 03-23-2006 12:25 PM

ALL of the WRX's & STIs here in the states that rally run 15's. I dont know anyone that runs 16's.

You should be able to locate some used 15's (tires or wheels) on SS.com or the Ben's rally classifieds.

TD Prorally 1's with a 48mm offset worked for us great & were very cost effective with stock WRX calipers on our 04.

dont waste your time on other sizes.

The stock Subie alum wheels also are very strong, Randy Zimmer uses them all the time to success also. But his is a GC body, & I dont know if the brake caliper clearance is the same. You'll need to check. If it is- those can be found cheap. Still 15". ;)
we also have an STI that does have 17" gravel tires
The Pirellis? Are they still made? Where were the tires sourced?
Chromer 03-23-2006 12:49 PM
So you guys are saying run a 15inch wheel on a forester. :disco:
You don't have your vehicle listed in your profile. If you have a SF forester (98-02), the stock 15" steelies are quite strong. I probably have 8,000-10,000 miles of logging road driving on my steelies with no issues. The 16" alloy wheels from a S are even stronger. I did manage to put a nice gouge in the lip of one when I hit a head-sized rock at about 35mph. It balanced up fine when the shredded tire was removed and a new tire was put on it though.

What Fred said tho: For just running around on dirt roads, the stock wheels are fine. Supposedly Cooper/General and Pirelli make AT truck tires that MAY fit the 16's and will be better suited to gravel use, but I haven't really explored this too much.
digitalpimp 03-23-2006 03:42 PM
The Pirellis? Are they still made? Where were the tires sourced?
i can get pirelli xr tire in a 17. you could also TRY a rs5 wet. again, neither of those are real Gravel tires (the RS5 is a tarmac slick, the wet has some cuts in it, and you could add some more to TRY to make a gravel tire out of it, and the xr is a tire for pikes peak). those are the latest compounds (same as the old TJ compound) straight from italy. PM me if you want more info.

nate49509 - most every team that did well at pikes peak ran a 17 inch tire. we (CDP racing) were wishing we had too.
Lachlan 03-23-2006 04:59 PM

I just ordered some team dynamics pro rallys in a +50 offset to clear ye olde 4 pots. They were $135 each, so a nice price compared to other rally rims. But if you don't have big brakes, I would just stick with suby 15's. You can find gravel tires in a 16 but they're $2-300 per tire. I got a barely-used set of 15's for $60.
bjorn240 03-23-2006 05:46 PM
i can get pirelli xr tire in a 17.
Can you really? If so, I retract my previous belly laugh. I thought they were no more. BTW, I had no idea you were so youthful. Scary!

digitalpimp 03-23-2006 05:52 PM

:) no worries, everybody at rallys thinks that i'm way older than i am, anybody that i meet outside of rallys thing that i'm younger than i am.
recce02 03-23-2006 09:38 PM

++++I wish i could tell you but he had a hard time finding them himself. They are pretty sick ill try to find a pic and post it

Ok despite how Im'practical they'd be, gravel 17's would be really sexy on a prepped TSD/RallyX car, of course on a "real" rally car they'd be outa site.
