Any input on the Advan 048's

They make a 225/45/16 which would be nice- don't know a thing about them though- two compounds as well- medium and mdeium/hard

The 048 is pretty similar to the Pirelli Corsa and Michelin Pilot Cup. Slighty more grip than a new set of Victoracers. Similar wear to the victos too. They like a bit more negative camber for best wear characteristics. I did find they got a bit greasier earlier than a victos.
I've recently switched to the Corsa when Tirerack had them on special, and the Corsa is a bit more consistent across a temperature range.
I agree that the 225/45-16 would be an interesting size on some RS wheels.

The big problem with them is that they heat cycle out very quickly. Some people claim that they start loosing grip after 3 heat cycles. I'm not sure if I believe that, but it didn't take very long until mine turned bad, particularly the rears. I believe the LTS version of the A048 uses the MH compound.
I would probably prefer something like Victoracers. Should have more grip new, and you'll get much more useful life out of them.
The M compound is supposed to be considerably better, so those might be worth consideration.

They are ok for a club R compound, definately faster stuff out there though.

I figured the medium compound would be the best compromise for autox/track.
I'd consider the A032's, but the price will have to drop a little more- the victo's run the same price (in my size anyways).
Funny the Victo's, even as a"old" tire- still appear to be very good bang for the buck :)
Anynone try the relatively new Hankooks- the RS211's by any chance?

I know some engineers at yokohama. Rumor is they're discontinuing the A032R's and coming out with a new R comp to sell with the A048 ;) No word on when the new tire/compound is going to be released at this point.

True, but the 32's will last what, double what the Vict's will. Pick you poison; long lasting or fast(er)...

I totally agree. If I was only doing hpde's the 32 (or RA1) would probably be my tire of choice, but I'm doing a juggling act trying to find a tire that will perform decently at autox and decently at the track.
Someday I'll amass enough wheels that I'll have a dedicated autox setup as well as a dedicated track setup :)

interesting to see the 48's grip comment compared to the victoracer.....
It's always good to have as many sets of rims...... then you can easily swap rims/tires easily.....

Right now the tried and true Victoracer seems to be the on hands favorite for this "juggling act".
I want to also look thoroughly into the aforementioned A048- especially the medium compound. The 225/45 sizing would be advantageous, the price isn't- especially if true on heat cycle life.
I'm also looking around for input into the Hankook rs z211- it's the tire USTCC and Spec Miata is going w/.

If you are doing autocross events first I would get the RA1's which will wear them down a bit before hitting the track. Victoracers wear really fast compared to a RA1 or 032/048, you will likely get double the events out of the RA1 but only be a hair slower than victoracers.

Well after all was said and done I ordered a set of the A048's in 225/45/16- medium compound. I got to visit w/ a few folks who have run the medium compound and thought it was pretty well suited for a "compromise" autox/HPDE tire.
Review probably won't be in until May :(

I'm looking at the same tire and size right now. I'd be inclined to do the MH compound, though, as I [i]do[/i] have a second set of wheels/tires specifically for auto-x. :banana:

Pat- I put one on the scale the other day 21 lbs 14 oz- not too shabby :)
I was back and forth with Victo's as well- probably one of the few tires that work reasonably well both at the track and at autox.
I'm "wasting" one set of rims w/ winter tires right now :(

I've run the 032s for a few years going back to the old "R" compound - before multiple compounds were available for regular consumers. Even with heat cycling they are still manageable for HPDE stuff - a little slippery for AX. Much faster stuff out there at that point, but their longevity more than makes up for it. They seem to be able to take quite a beating.

It never ends...I've finally got two sets of CE-28s, plus a street set, but I've only run one "real" event in the last year :mad: I'm actually dying to try out a new set of shaved 032's in the soft compound. But now my clutch is hinting at the first signs of WOT slippage...I'll say it again - it never ends ;)

I currrently have the Dunlop SP Super Sport Race tires and they have been the best tire I've ever owned for performance driving. I did 2 open track days on them and a bunch of street miles. Awesome tires, and they are dirt cheap right now since they are discontinued.
The thing is that I'm looking for a good tire I can drive to the track on, have fun on the open track sessions, and drive home with minimal worries. I can do this easily on the Dunlops, but what about the A048's?
Also, how do you think they would compare to the Dunlops at the track? Way stickier, or about even?
Reason I ask, is because the wife gave me the green light to get a set of dedicated track tires and wheels. She won't always be able to follow me in a support vehicle though with said tire/wheel in the back of a truck, so I still have to be able to drive on the street. Therefore no slicks for me.
What are you guys thoughts? Another set of Dunlop SP Super Sport Race or try the Advan A048?

I'll be getting the A048's in 245/40-17 and running them at Summit in October. I'll be going from RA-1's and Nitto NT-01's. I'd go back to the Victoracers but they don't come in 245/40-17. :(

I'm sad to say- mine are still stacked up in the basement :(. My S02's which I counted on dying this season- still have a little (little) life in them. Have a two day HPDE this weekend which should be their last, also happens to be the last event of the season too :( :(
They will be ready to go next spring however :)

I ended up buying the A048s to put on my open track wheels. 225/45-16s on the '99 2.5RS wheels. I'm not a great judge of tires, so I can't tell you how they compare to Tire X or Tire Y, but I ran them at VIR back in April and was very happy with them. Nice and predictable, a little bit of aural feedback (not nearly as much as a street tire, but more than Victoracers).
For the past few weeks I've been running them on the street just for ****s and giggles (since they'd only been to that one HPDE thus far I thought they might be feeling under-utilized :D ). Even in the heavy rains from TS/TD Ernesto they were rock solid on the highway at 75mph.

^ good to know- I don't plan on running them much on the street (maybe a to and fro for an event), but nice to know the wet performance is there :)

I have run BOTH Corsa's , The 032 and 048, the Dunlops, Hoosiers and Pirelli D4 and D5 slicks, as well as W5 wets.
I have the 048's on PGG and love them. Ran them on the STI with Pinks once for 1 hour before gas ran out. I think they are as consistent this side of Hoosiers with good temps and good pressures.

i'm gonna try the 48's next, but i have a set of 235/40/17 a032's that i was going to use on my 240, but will now be mounted on the wagon, for hpde. should be using them at the sept 30 event, so i'll report back.

Do you know if your 032s are the medium or soft compound? Interested in your feedback after the event...the 032s are getting scarce, but they're a steal at $150;)
