Do clear taillights exist? part 1

Do clear taillights exist?
I know it seems a bit odd but I was wondering if anyone knew of clear taillights for Subarus. I'm big on exterior so I've been fine tuning mine to meet my satisfaction. I have replica JDM's, and clear corner lenses. What I'm trying to say is that I am going on a Black, Blue, and Clear scheme.

I know it's a bit far fetched but if anyone knows where I could find clear taillights let me know.

P.S: If anyone is clueless as to what I am talking about don't sweat it. :p

I think you can do customize it, not sure if you can do it.
satrya 01-12-2005 11:09 PM

You mean "Altezza" style?

Handsdown 01-13-2005 12:06 AM

i think he means all clear, white, like the lowrider truck and old style honda aftermarket lights, no red on them at all.

they don't, but the reason is that most subaru owners think they're ugly and won't buy them.
Apex Rex 01-13-2005 12:08 AM

You could always tint your stock tail-lights if you wanted to try to get rid of the red in your tail-lights....
IllNastyImpreza 01-13-2005 01:36 AM

bleach them...
seesPiKegrind 01-13-2005 09:00 AM

Handsdown's got what I'm saying. I know it's a bit far-fetched but I'm sure I could find something. How do you bleach taillights anyway?
CalcVictim 01-13-2005 09:10 AM

I think the best aproach is to take your taillight apart and have somebody machine a new cover using plexiglass, you could use led instead of regular bulbs and have everything be legit while having the look you want.

That's not why. They are illegal in all states now. You must have at least 1 in^2 of red reflector in your tailights.

Completely clear taillights would be illegal by itself.

However, afaik, it is not impossible to maintain legality & functionality, as long as:
(1) There are red side-facing retroreflectors on the rear section of the vehicle
(2) There are red rearward-facing retroreflectors on the rear section of the vehicle
(3) The brake lights light up red
(4) The reverse lights light up white
(5) The rear turn signal indicator lights up either red or amber
(6) The retroreflectors and lights meet certain brightness & coverage pattern standards

One example is the latter model Lexus RXes, which have a completely clear / slightly tinted taillight. It still meets the requirements above by having retroreflectors for #1 & 2 on the body panel/ bumper cover, and have clear-looking brake lights that light up red.

Of course, it is possible that an aftermarket clear taillight, should it meet the first 5 criteria, may actually fail on the 6th because the retroreflector is too small, or for other reasons like a poorly designed reflector / optics.

One final remark about replacing taillights in general, is that there is the possibility of water leakage into the trunk. Imho, this is mostly because the taillights are not properly seated into its place, allowing trunk gutter runout to enter the trunk space. Some versions, like the "Altezza" & "Jaguar" type for the GD Imprezas, allow this in large part because one of the mounting points is too long. See posts #13-15 on this thread http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=601912 for reference. Even if you get non-aftermarket taillights as replacements, such a leak can still occur imho. One example is the reports of GC Impreza owners regarding taillight leak when they replaced theirs with the JDM oem red & white ones. I doubt the JDM oem ones are poorly made, as they all (i.e. JDM, USDM,... for GC, GD, GG,...) most likely come from the same manufacturer, Koito.

DIAF, don't dis-respect an impreza by ricing it out with clear tails
seesPiKegrind 01-13-2005 04:33 PM

My goal is not to rice it or make it illegal
I understand that it is illegal if the entire thing is clear and all bulbs are clear as well. But if I were to get the entire taillight clear, I would put in the right bulbs in order to stay legal.

In terms of ricing it out man, I would want to try and put some black lining or background in order to get some contrast. Again, I know it's far-fetched I just figured I'd do some searching.

Worst comes to worst I buy a set of Morettes.

Even with red bulbs the all clear tailights are still illegal without adding some kind of red reflector.

welll
i swore the new lex rx330s had all clear tails? just the bulbs light up red...???
Handsdown 01-13-2005 04:56 PM

lots of things that people have on their cars are illegal.

the reason the companies don't make them is because there's no profit, it has nothing to do with legality.

that's why you see companies making things that say "off road use only" because they are illegal, but people will still buy them to use on and off roads. they buy them and the companies make money from that, that's why they are produced.

no one wants to buy the clear ones for subarus, except of course for our dear friend SeePikeGrind- and unless he pays enough to have just one unit produced(hella mucho dolares) no one will make just one unit.

the answer is, no- for better or worse(in my point of view better) they don't make all clear taillights, so if you want aftermarket lights, you'll have to settle for the even uglier altezzas.

if you wanted to DIY, the altezzas would be a great starting slab to create your dream on.

It's not just a red bulb, its thick bulb condom. lights need to have a certain range of photometrics to stay legal along with having reflex reflectors visible from both the rear and sides, and the usual bulb colors for turn/brake/back up.

Here's a little taillight work that we did on 04 tails... we're gonna do my 03 tails soon enough but on the crystal clear 04+ tails they look SO sweet.

Just need a little more red and these would be the same...

I was kind of thinking of going the other way, i wanted to get the stock ones back on and put the light(er) film on them to make them dark...

But i really haven't made up my mind yet as to what i want to do.

Once you get them, check if one of the mounts protrude like shown in the picture below. If so, see my remark on the lower part of post#10 above. On the link in that post, I conducted an experiment and confirmed that it can cause leakage if not dealt with. I've had them for almost a year now without any leakage, just with that simple modification.
