Best single-guage pod for steering column? part 1

Best single-guage pod for steering column?
I'm looking to put a single 45 or 52mm boost guage on the steering column, in pretty much the same way that the OEM boost guage is mounted. However, I'm having trouble finding a good pod to accomodate this.

What's the best solution? Has anyone tried the very simple VDO pod, or the HKS pod? I'm also wondering about the pedestal mount pods, although they seem as though they might be too big/too tall/too busy.

Any advice would be good, especially info on the above. I've seen the single corner pod that goes over by the a-pillar, but I don't like it for some reason. I'm looking for something really unobtrusive and simple, like the OEM pod.

hate to say....but Vividracing has a single Greddy pod. Hope this helps....but look around.

i just finished doing an install for mine jsut now actually, i bought the Autometer Gaugepod 52mm, prety flawless for $12 :D pix soon!

The HKS 46mm pod is a total POS! It is held on by a plastic ring that brakes way to easy!

The best pod for 45mm gauges is the Lamco unit that comes with the stock gauge. Unfortunatly nobody sells this unit.... infact.. most of the guys using it either got the gauge with the car...or buy used OEM gauges, then take the pod, and re-sell just the gauge.

I would advise not going the 45mm route unless you only want the one gauge. I started out with a 04 look 45mm boost, then wanted to get the rest... so I got an EGT, thinking the vendor would be getting more 04 look gauges...well the vendor did not get any more... and would only order more in a groupe buy. I ended up contacting omori my self and had them make me the one gauge I neaded (oil temp). It was expensive to do this... in the end it was a wash. If I cut my losses and just sold the 45mm gauges I had at a loss, and started over, or just order a custom gauge.

So, unless you know you can get the gauges you want... becarfull what you pick.... you may have a hard time getting your hands on the same ones down the road.....

I actually bought the lamco pod to put my Omori 45mm gauge in it, and it works great. It is a bit expensive however...so it really comes down to what you want.

Autometer pods looked a lil too ghetto for me, so I opted to drop more dough and get something that looks good.

You wanted to know which one to get....

how about this?

this is the real deal STI gauge(defi!).. with pod and moded shroud.....

If you dont have a gauge yet check it out!

I'm pretty anal about things looking clean and OEM, so if that ends up being my best option I'd probably pay the premium. My other question would be where's the best (cheapest) place to buy the OEM pod w/o the lamco guage? Or is that just not possible?
TopKatz 03-05-2004 12:26 PM

I was unable to find a place that sold just the pod. Your best bet may be to find a used gauge/pod set and take what you want from it, and sell the rest.
mouserWRX 03-05-2004 12:33 PM

I got just the pod for $100 from subaruwrxparts.com -- I don't know if you still can or not, but that's what I did, shoot em an e-mail and ask :D
Zoinks 03-05-2004 12:52 PM

Yikes. Compared to $12-30ish for the aftermarket stuff, that is insane...
TopKatz 03-05-2004 12:54 PM

dont you mean Zoinks? ; )

Yeah, thats about right... now you see the delima...
mouserWRX 03-05-2004 12:56 PM

yeah and the aftermarket stuff looks like @$$...so if you wanna do it right, you gotta pay...it's really up to you.

The hard part about the 45mm gauge is that there are few pods that can really fit them....HKS no longer makes one (and I heard it was bad quality too) and then the only other one I could find was autometer ones, and I didn't like the way they look...that's only personal opinion tho.
mouserWRX 03-05-2004 12:57 PM

I'll post a pic of what mine looks like when I get home.

What Im doing is going to install all three(Boost, EGT, and oil temp) in a din panel. I had a HKS din pannel imported. The problem is that the pannel sits behind the trim.. so its set back. Im going to grab the forester din pocket. It has a flip open face. This sits flush with the trim.... Im going to try and get everything to play nice so I have my three gauges flush mounted above my radio.

Although the 45mm gauges are trick, and look oem... they propose substantil problems when it comes time to mount them in a way that looks oem.

Doughboy - those are bad ass.... you would not regret spending the dough to go that rout... its a defi gauge.....
TopKatz 03-05-2004 01:05 PM

Thats actualy about 150 off what those gauges cost new... if you can even get them.

I'm about to use the same pod myself. I'm interested in those pics as well as any comments/tips on the install.
InfamousDX 03-05-2004 01:46 PM

HKS sucks ****. I know from experience. Pretty fockin' flimsy.
mouserWRX 03-05-2004 01:49 PM

I'm very happy w/ the lamco pod, the fit of a 45mm was a little tight, but definitely doable. Looks stock...cept the gauge is infinitely better :D
SF WRX04 03-05-2004 02:00 PM

I know you were looking for a single gauge pod. But have you considered the Autometer instrument cluster bezel. It looks very OEM. I have Defi boost and EGT gauges in my car so the price is not cheap but it looks good.

what sized gauges do you recommend/are getting yourself for the DIN panel?

Yeah, I have considered it. I just didn't want to shell out for another guage just yet... I was figuring I'd eventually stick egt/oil press. guages in an a-pillar mount when I ever did any real modifications down the road. However, the OEM signle pod is $$ enough that I'd probably be better off just getting another guage if I can't find a decent single pod.

I'd really like to see some good close-up pics of your setup. Let's see 'em!

Anyone get their pics online?
TopKatz 03-12-2004 08:43 AM

Im going with 45mm omori units. IM installing them today, and will post pics later....
bigSTIck 10-19-2004 09:05 PM

Hey, That's a slick dual guage set-up!

Cool set up! I just ordered one for my 05 STI (as it looks like it might fit) and got some FAZE guages to put in them.....an air/fuel guage and a boost guage.
