Anyone running the Cobra Misano seat(s)? part 1

BIGSKYWRX 12-09-2005 10:13 AM

Anyone running the Cobra Misano seat(s)?
I'd like to shed a little weight if I'm going to swap seats, reclining is a must (wife's daily driver). All of the recliners I've researched thus far weigh in about the same as the stocker.

The only one that doesn't (that I've found) is the Cobra Misano- the carbon shell I'm guessing is what saves the weight over the others.

Ofcourse this seat costs a small fortune  , but would like to hear from anyone who is (has) running this seat. Fitment, quality, holding up, etc.

Danke

....mike....ive been researching seats for my TR lately and the only thing that I'm sure of is that ya better be prepared for a LOT of bs.

....and about the weight thing.....many of the seats that I've been looking at are lighter than the stock seats....no airbag.....
BIGSKYWRX 12-09-2005 12:41 PM

Scotty - the Misano seems to be the exception (but comes w/ heck a price tag) they weigh in @ ~ 21 lbs vs 28-30 for most of the other recliners. Need to add in brackets ofcourse- I think 12-15 lbs.

The oe seats are ~ 46-48 lbs w/ hardware, that puts most of the recliners w/ hardware roughly in the same ballpark as the oe seats.

The Misano's should shave ~ 10 lbs/side, but at high cost $. Ofcourse your getting a much better bolstered seat as well.

Hey Mike, as you asked:

I have had a single Cobra Missano R for some time. I got it with the blue alcantra insert, and so saw no need to buy 2 as it matches the interior of the STi so well, it is not that noticeable that I only have one (unless you look from behind and see the CF backing that is hehehe). From what I remember, it is between 18-20lbs without the brackets, and the brackets for it are from Wedge, and as they are much simpler than the OEM one, should also be much lighter. And if you know about the Wedge bracket, then you know there is some height adjustment, though limited. Mine is set perfectly for me, and have no problems at all. With the Sparco Monza I tried (see below), I felt like I was sitting on the floor, and had to peek over the dash!

As for use? I have loved every minute in this seat! Holds me in well, yet is comfortable for every day driving, even 5+ hour drives! And I am 6' tall and about 240lbs - so not a midget or a toothpick (though I WISH!!!). I tried a Sparco Monza, and it held me in nice, but was TOO snug. And because it was a metal tube frame, it was bruising my thighs as it was pressing against my hip bones - OUCH! I used to have a Cobra Daytona in my old WRX and it was nice, but the sides were not supported, just padding. So it does not hold you in that good. With the Missano, it is the CF that holds you in, so it has excellent grip. But then there is ONE bad thing about the CF backing - the outer shoulder wing tip (the top ">" part) rubs up against the side pillar moulding and presses the seat belt against it. I just live with it and am fine. But if you wanted to be perfect, can take it to a seat shop to have them trim it and touch up the upholstery.

In short, I would NOT give this seat up for nothing!!!! But sadly, it appears they no longer sell the R like I have. The new one has leathere or something else on it - mine was cloth. So the cost is much higher now too. But still, this seat is WORTH IT! Yes, you can go buy some cheap Tenzo junk for a lot less. But also remember - it is YOUR BUTT sitting in it for hours on end. So you should think comfort as well as performance.
BIGSKYWRX 12-09-2005 08:15 PM

Rocky- thanks for the review! I'm not in the midget or toothpick catagory either :D

Yeah the new ones are leather surround (mostly the bolsters) w/ cloth in the middle.

Height is going to be important, my wife is a little on the short side- her seat height is fine w/ me (I prefer sitting a little high). I have seen many race buckets that are almost literally on the floor- those would not work.

Time to start saving my pennies :)

Mike, there are 2 parts to the Wedge bracket. The base that bolts on to the floor, and then another bracket that bolts on to the bottom of the seat, and has 3 holes in the flanges that bolts to the floor bracket, like this:

________
/ \

And from the side, this is what you use for height adjustment:

Trust me, using the bottom hole, you WILL feel like you are on top of the world!

Now, you don't have to save that many pennies! As I said, the one that I have is extremely close enough to be matching the passenger seat. So you don't have to get 2 of them.

Oh, and I forgot one other little nit pick, but I can live with it. Cause of my "SIZE", the thigh bolsters have widdened a wee bit, and so the inner one rubs up against the hand brake. But I can live with it for such an EXCELLENT seat. I would imagine you could too. And anyone who has sat in this seat, LOVES it - just can't stand the price :( BUTT, as I said, you are sitting in this for hours at a time on long journeys, and if it is your only car, then comfort has a BIG factor in it too. Quite a few I know have gotten the non reclining race buckets, and though excellent for racing, are a pain in the arse to get in/out of (try doing that in a suit or a dress!!!!!!!!!), and after any length of time, are SCREAMING in pain.

That's good news! Yeah non-recliner is out of the question. I've got black seats in my wagon and they make a black one- it would probably match up pretty good w/ the passenger one :)
BIGSKYWRX 12-10-2005 09:49 AM

Likey this:

import111 12-10-2005 04:33 PM

That is a good looking seat.
z3coupe 12-10-2005 04:37 PM

Oh it is more than just good looking - it is the BEST RECLINER OUT THERE!!!!! I've tried a lot of seats before I spent the $$$$ on this one, and it was the only one that did it all. Comfortable, holds you in real nice, and is extremely light weight. And not to mention, can match the STi interior color scheme.
BIGSKYWRX 12-10-2005 04:47 PM

Dear Santa:

I've been a very good boy this year as you are aware. I wish for world peace and if that is not possible, the Cobra Misano for my WRX.

Thanks

Mike

Hunsaker makes a reclinable seat that is only #20, but that doesn't include brackets/rails. Stockers weigh 45 IIRC, so I'd think you could get by with #15 in hardware coming out to #35 would save #10.

Just a thought. IIRC Sparco base, side mounts, & silders are each #5 or #15 total.
BIGSKYWRX 12-12-2005 09:27 PM

The price is attractive on those seats- I've never heard of them- how is the quality? I've read some horror stories on guys getting "cheap" (as in quality) seats.

I see that Bride makes a high end carbon recliner as well- also read that if your close to "typical" american size you can skip their seats :)

Thanks

a friend just put Bride Brix II's in his GC.....and they are T-I-G-H-T on me

I'm 5'8" and ~185 and I could use them for race seats....but NOT dd seats...no.

I'm looking at the MOMO Speed seat....I like the look better than the 'boy racer' look of other seats that I've seen.....nice Alcantara inserts....under $600ea shipped, new...
BIGSKYWRX 12-13-2005 09:47 AM

I think Bride's are definitely out for me :)
Uncle Scotty 12-13-2005 09:51 AM

Mike...I'll sell ya my TR seats....cheap......you and them sound like a match made in heaven!!!!!

Perfect fit!!!!
BIGSKYWRX 12-13-2005 10:05 AM

perfect fit like my wagon seats :) I love the look of the seats (black covered STi seats)- they just lack bolstering- my 02 seats had more (ofcourse they didn't look as nice).

If i'm going to take the plunge for new seats I want the added satisfaction of shedding some lbs as well :)

Know a couple local auto-x guys who run them and like them. They have better sizing for big midwestern folk. :p

Don't know of more than people who've had them for a couple years. I know a friend is considering them for his STS 2.5 RS

 - it's the corn fed beef! A couple of years of holding up is encouraging, most of the horror stories I've read it was within a year they started to "go away"
z3coupe 12-14-2005 02:58 AM

Momo Speed Seats = cheap and fugly. Trust me, try the Cobra Missano and you won't want anything else. I have tried a bunch of other brand seats, and nothing comes close.
BIGSKYWRX 12-14-2005 10:08 AM

Rocky did you get yours at subesports? Looks like they are in So Cal
Hokie-wrx wagon 12-14-2005 12:20 PM

I have a set of sparco torinos. I like them so much I took them out of my previous car to put in the wrx.
z3coupe 12-15-2005 02:43 AM

Yes Mike, got mine at Sube Sports, which is very local to me.
BIGSKYWRX 12-15-2005 10:07 AM

Might have to take a little vaca to So Cal :)
z3coupe 10-10-2006 05:40 AM

Hey Mike - you should have kept in touch with me! I just sold mine, as I now have an 06 MKV GTI and did not need it anymore :)
Uncle Scotty 10-10-2006 08:25 AM

I ended up getting a bugeye seat for cheap, and put that in the TR.....it is

Oh sure now you tell me :)
raamaudio 10-10-2006 10:25 AM

Wedge seat brackets are rather simply designed and overly built. I have extensively modded a few pairs to make them suite my needs better and cut down the weight as much as possible, saving approx 5 lbs for each seat.

Now I just build my own brackets and can do so with 5 lbs of steel at the most. I have laid some out in 6061 aluminum but have not finished them (for a project car I am now selling so not going to bother with them).

Getting things all lined up to clear everything, sit properly, angled back for good thigh support, mounted as low as comfortably possible(lower CG), etc can take quite some time but once done, nothing better:)
-----------------------

As for seats, my favorite for performance, style, comfort and cost are Recaro SRD or Speeds but the fabric on the SRD is a PITA to keep clean, everything sticks to it, not sure on the Speeds as have not used them yet but may for my FXT.
Oh sure now you tell me :)
Mike, it was advertised on here for some time :)
BIGSKYWRX 10-10-2006 11:48 AM

raamaudio- I'm guessing you could find a nice market for 6061 brackets :)

Rocky- I need to pay better attention :D
z3coupe 10-11-2006 02:20 AM

You should have, cause now a Mini Cooper S local STX competitor is now using it :(
raamaudio 10-11-2006 09:06 AM

I can imagine the disclaimer it would take to CYA selling such things. I will just stick to making what I can for myself which is not much these days with my growing business, makes it hard to work on my cars. It sure bugs my to see high cost, low weight seats sitting on overweight brackets though:(

Does anyone know what sliders and brackets work with a cobra daytona (other than the cobra and wedge eng. equipment)?

Sorry for the off topic ?.
