Apexi Units in Dash Pic

Finally broke down and got a digital camera. First time posting a pic so here goes. AVC-R and S-AFC with turbo timer, Eclipse head unit and remote, and Tein EDFC (shock controller) in the ashtray area.

nicest dash i've seen so far. I like the clean and organized look.

Gotta love the eclipse:D
mitch808 07-07-2002 01:06 AM

Looking good, can you take a few more angle shots though... please :D I want to see the top and side edges, and how much you had to angle inward the units to fit
oldmansan 07-07-2002 01:07 AM

Thanks

actually, I'd like to pull the faceplate and "clean up" the edges. I was in a hurry at the time (Hispanic wife was coming home soon).

I took more pics but the glare of the sun and the flash kept getting the best of me. I may try some tonight (when it's dark) or tomorrow. The edges do need some fine tuning, but they're acceptable the way they are. I had to "build up" some of the areas behind the plate so there wouldn't be holes. Was a major PITA, but I really like the end result, and that it seems to be the only one out there. I was debating about buying a carbon fiber kit (stick-on) to cover the edges, but by the time I cut it to fit, it may look crappy on the edges.

Very Well Done!

how do you like the Tein adjustables? with the controller, is it easy to adjust? by the way thats the best dash mod i have seen in a while, that looks very clean. you do good work.
oldmansan 07-07-2002 02:53 PM

Real easy to adjust.

It has 3 memory locations, so I set mine up for full hard, medium, and full soft. I'll probably eliminate the full soft and go full hard, medium + (where I like it most), and medium- (wife mode).

never seen sucha nice dash. much props. how much it cost for customization?
oldmansan 07-08-2002 10:01 PM

I did it all if that's what you're asking.

My local stereo guru said they wouldn't fit. He was almost right. Pretty tight.

nice setup. after seeing this i'm considering the eclipse HU
Conduit 07-09-2002 08:33 AM

Does anyone know if the Apex-i unit will fit nicely anywhere else? I'm trying to think of where to put it, but I use the stock stereo...

One unit actually fits nicely in front of the ashtray. Just use velcro on the front of the ashtray and bottom of the dash above the ashtray. Held solidly and if you want the cord not to show, dremel the back of the unit so the cord will go straight out the back.

I have a ? about this since I was just outside fiddling around with it :) The bottom of the center console above the ashtray is angled up, while the front of the ashtray is angled down. I can flush up the unit on the bottom of the center console easily, but at most, 1/8" of the Apexi is touching the ashtray. I had it centered at the time, blocking the cigarette lighter. Is this where you had it mounted? It seems like that would shake and rattle around alot.

Also, I presume you used something like 3M Duralock (super velcro, basically) to mount it? Is there a good source for that in some other size than the 1" suares that Radio Shack sells? I use it for lots of things, anyway, a nice sheet of it would kick ass ;)
thanks for all the guidance,
rob

Actually,

I don't remember if I centered it or put it a little to the right. Do whatever looks best. I just used velcro strips with adhesive backs. Held fine and didn't move around when I was adjusting the controls. Even my friends thought it looked good there. The velcro on the bottom of the center console would probably be fine by itself, but the velcro on the ashtray front and even above a little where the ashtray mounts flush to will anchor it up. You won't see any of it anyway, and when I took it out, I just used a little Goo Gone to take off the little bit of glue that stuck (not much). I actually remember using a little bit of foam behind the lower back of the unit to angle the unit out at the bottom a bit for better visibility.

Hey did u have any problems takin out that Stock 6 Cd changer and putting in the Head unit u have? The silver trim still fit back on? did u have to sand nething?

Also the Apex TT mounted next to the cup holder...could i get some install instructions on that? how did you do it?! mines coming in the mail and thats where i want it. ne help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The stock HU is very easy to take out and any single or double DIN HU can be used in it's place. You just take the brackets off the stock HU and mount them to the new HU. If you use a single DIN, then you'll have an empty space. You can get a pocket from a Forester, or mount some electronics like the A'pexi stuff. The Blitz SBC-ID and PowerMeter fit perfectly without any dremeling IIRC.

As for the mounting by the cupholder, it's actually very simple. When you remove the trim for the faceplate, you'll see that there is a gap that you can run a wire through. I did this with my SBC-ID. Then just use velcro or double-sided tape to mount the unit. No dremeling or modifications needed. :)

I'm going to go outside and take a picture of what I am talking about. Mine is already angled out at the bottom by a fair amount. I am just certain I am confused :)

Is the Apexi unit/s worth the money? I don't know much about them, but they seem really expensive.

Conduit, I had my there for a bit and it's distracting to have to keep looking down.

Here is where I have mine (excuse the extreme glare):

It snaps right in. When I get close to home I take it off and put it on the floor next to the passenger seat because we all KNOW how "Bling bling" the apexi units looks. Don't want the fiends to get any ideas.
Conduit 07-10-2002 06:10 PM

I think I may need to get a single DIN HU. Here are the pics:

This is my current center console with the Apexi unit in the tray, flushed up with the bottom of the center console:

Does this help explain what I mean? Aside from mounting it in the glove compartment, or across the open fuse/coin cup on the left side of the driver (NO way, I had a gauge there for a while and it's almost useless there), I am running out of ideas without doing something more to the center console. Things also are starting to look kinda mismatched, which was the whole reason I got the DSBC and greddy gauges to begin with ;)
oldmansan 07-10-2002 09:38 PM

Conduit,

If you're only mounting that unit, I'd velcro it in just like you're holding it in the upper two pics. The velcro on the back of the unit will only brace it up a little on the top. I would dremel the back so the cord isn't so prominent, but either way it'll look fine. If you go to a single din unit, center the unit above the single head unit with a plate to cover the holes. Not sure how much effort you want to put into it.

Conduit 07-11-2002 01:26 AM

I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to interior pieces. My eye won't permit alot of things. I was actually thinking of mounting it below the headunit, so it tapers visually like the center console. I don't mind the work :)

You know what else I noticed tonight? The AFC is almost exactly the same size as the center, smooth part of the OEM head unit. I stuck it there for a second for fun, and it looked pretty good!

It would be nice if I could mold some kind of housing and mount it above the rear view. That would look kinda trick, but I'm afraid it would be too bling. Anyone seen a pic of someone that has at least mounted one of these things up there?
take care,
rob

Conduit,

Yeah, I'm a bit picky myself. How you like that shift knob? Did you use the thread insert? Let me know.

TypeC 07-11-2002 10:49 AM

Conduit,
hey! What are you doing with my shift knob?!
I forgot you had an AFC instead. I guess it doesn't have to be totally visable since you aren't changing things constantly.

I too had a gauge in the coin holder and it was useless; not only that but I had to keep taking my eyes off of the road.

Yes, some people have mounted their Apexi devices above the rear view. I don't know if I saved the pic though. Warning: This is highly visable. I woudln't reccomend it as people will remember it and try to jack it (even though they wouldn't know what to do with it).

I actually didn't. What I did do was fit the knob straight onto the BPM short shifter, and then dremel some tiny notches in the BPM for the set screws to set into. Then I just tightened them down. It hasn't moved in about a year.

My biggest complaint with that knob is the bottom trim ring. I simply can't get it to thread on in that position...it always ends up crossthreaded. I just left it like that, you can barely tell anyway, and it's incredibly irritating  The other annoying thing is that the emblem in the center gets filthy and kind of a soft plastic that likes to hold dirt. I have to bust out straight simple green and q-tips to really keep it sharp.
TypeC 08-20-2002 12:24 PM

Conduit, did you ever get yours mounted? How did it turn out?

I ended up getting an s-afc as well and ditched the unichip. For now I have it in my glove compartment, and sometimes put it in front of the ashtray. I'll think of something later:
