Are side skirts really that difficult to paint? part 1

Are side skirts really that difficult to paint?
I had to leave my car at the local subaru dealer to get the quarter panel and some suspension replaced, also having the whole unibody straightened. This happened after some guy decided to pull a right turn on red right in front of me while I had the left green arrow and slid into a high curb trying to avoid him.

Well, while it was in there I wanted to have the black side skirts painted. I called up the dealership and they highly recommended that I did not have it done b/c of the type of plastic used and its finish. The gentleman at the body shop said that the waxy plastic and its rough finish did not lend it self well to painting and said that it would chip soon after and he would not warranty the work. I did not expect him to warrranty the work but if he says its not going to go well at all I just have to wonder what kind of durability all of you are getting out of your painted sideskirts. I would also like to know how many of you had special paint procedures done and what they were.

Seems to me it would be cheaper and better to buy OEM painted sideskirts.
quentinberg007 01-18-2004 09:54 PM

there are no painted OEM GC/GM skirts. Only for the WRX.

Well - they probably add a flex agent to the paint. I bought the OEM painted ones for my WRX, and they are holding up just fine after over a year - one thing which my body shop pointed out when I was pondering getting my prodrive mudflaps painted - he said if you got wax, etc. on them, it couldn't be readily cleaned off and the paint would not adhere well - the sideskits on the WRX look to be ABS, which is obviously paintable - the rough finish helps adhesion, too... maybe try another shop?
hitman912 01-19-2004 12:58 AM

definately not difficult to paint. i painted mine yesterday morning and put them on this afternoon. quick and they look good. the only problem is that they will most likely chip because i didnt use a flex agent but i used some adhesion promotor. but we'll see in the following weeks.

If you just painted them yesterday I would take them back off and let them cure for several days before putting them on.

In response to the initial question, yes paint will stick. I would advise sanding off the rough texture of the plastic to get a smooth surface, then use adhesion promoter. I've been keeping a close eye on my self-painted sideskirts all winter and they are holding up extremely well.

where did you guys get the paint to do this? does it come in a rattle can with the correct paint code and everything? ive been thinking about buying oem painted wrx skirts for my wagon but if i can paint it myself why should i waste the money.
CrazyMike13 01-19-2004 02:20 AM

I would also like to know where you got the paint.
Zola 01-19-2004 03:26 AM

Search on "painted sideskirts"....you could get it from http://www.paintworldinc.com or http://www.paintscratch.com

Nothing wrong with buying OEM ones though. To do them yourself and have them look good you'll have to be willing to put in the time (proper prep work, etc).

I have a question to piggy back on this thread, or hijack.

I recently painted mine silver, not exact silver, but enough to get rid of the lame blue I had on before. I used a fine grit sand paper and put about 10 coats of primer on and re sanded it down.

What grit sand paper did you DIY guys use?

Any types of primer? Clear coats?

Thanks.
UTCiv 01-20-2004 10:20 PM

Thanks for all the replies,

I will most likely paint them myself then, once the weather warms up.

I would have thought that the rough texture would lend itself better to the painting process and is kind of how I would like them to look but if smoothing it would better help the paint to stick then that may be the way that I go.

I'll post some pictures of my car up since its pretty nasty IMO.
abaxter34 01-21-2004 12:48 AM

how many spray cans of the paint does it usually take to do both sides, and also what is the average amount of coats everyone goes with? im assuming you can get the adhesion promoter and flex agent from a schucks or a pep boys, is that correct?
hitman912 01-21-2004 01:51 AM

400 grit or grain or whatever it is. and the paint is rattle can truck, van, and SUV paint from kragen. my wrx is silver so i used t191 ultra silver.
fragment 01-21-2004 02:39 AM

I painted mine last spring. I sanded, washed with oil/grease/silicone remover, sprayed with adhesion promoter, color and three coats of clear. I've gone through gravel and the salt/sand mix they throw on the road. The front of my car is looking sandblasted by stones, but my side skirts are looking great. No chips, peeling etc.
thetikler1 01-21-2004 10:38 AM

Fragment what kind of paint did you use? and how did you get a good paint match? I've got an air brush tool, and was debating on doing my own sideskirts.
thanks.

I used PPG paints Duplicolor and just had them mix up some using the WRB paint code (02C I think). Since I was doing the front bumper at the same time because of a minor collision, it was the easiest way to go. The sideskirts have a subtle texture and have their own "sight line" so I don't think a perfect match would be necessary, but mine match well.

I used a can of spray paint on each sideskirt, using thin, even coats until the can was empty. SEM makes a gray primer for flexible plastic parts that doubles as an adhesion promoter.

For sanding I did 320 -> 400 -> 600 -> 800 (what can I say, I was unemployed then and had loads of free time :lol: )

All of this information is on this board, I guarantee you'll find much of it using "painted sideskirts" as search terms.

Anybody got a good match for the Silverthorn Metallic that is on the gc8?

Its kind of a goldish silver compared to most, I'm thinking its going to be a little tough to match, but I have until the summer to get that stuff.
Flexx999 01-22-2004 05:06 AM

A buddy of mine that owns a body shop told me not to paint my stock side skirts. He said no matter what he does with them the paint will not stick and it will chip off and look like crap. He does alot of platic painting so he has all the special paint and prep chemicals to do it but said he is 100% against me doing it.

So I went with the OEM painted side skirts and got them 3M clear taped.

what is that for?
mach_six 01-22-2004 02:56 PM

What about this thing?

http://www.urethanesupply.com/bcap.html

Seems like this crap sticks to plastic very well. I haven't tried it personally.
kenchan 01-22-2004 08:37 PM

huh? just use adhesion promoter as your primer and the
paint will stick to the sideskirts. mine's been painted since
2001 and no chips or cracks or flaking... just normal wear
as the factory painted skirts.

70F temp garage, don't paint if lower than 50F as the
dry time is very long. don't paint if the air is humid as it will
cloud the clear coat. USE A MASK! wear protective
eye gear as well especially if you wear contacts. when i
paint, i open the garage door halfway so that there's no
breezes coming into the garage, but i can get out to breath
fresh air after i spray the pieces each time.

remove the sideskirts, peel off the rubber seal gently and
keep it in a safe place. you will reuse it after you paint.

1. wash & degrease the sideskirts (no need to sand).
2. apply adhesion promoter 3-4 thick coats dry 3min per coat.
3. wait 6-7min
4. spray basecoat 4-5 thin coats dry 5-6-min per coat
5. wait 1.5-2hours (very important! let paint dry and shrink)
6. spray clearcoat 3-4 medium coats dry 3-4min per coat
make the last coat thick, but dont let it drip.
7. wait 24hours (36-48hours would be better).
8. rubbing compound until it shines
9. wait 3weeks, do a very light rubbing compound again.
10. wax

during one of your base or clear coats, if you accidentally
get a drip or hair or any contaminants get on the paint,
just let it dry completely (wait 1.5hours - 2 hours) and
gently wet sand using 1000-1500grit.

goodluck. AND STOP SENDING ME PM'S ASKING ABOUT THIS!
 j/k hit my www for picts of my skirts that i painted with
duplicolor paints back like 3 years ago. :p they still look very
good. costed me $14 and about a day of working on it while
i played games on my computer.

Use at your own risk!

Its for a TPO, not ABS.

Its ying and yang.

TPO is commonly found in bumpers FWIW.
kenchan 01-23-2004 12:46 PM

yah, just use the adhesion promoter.

Subaru's color code for Silverthorn Metallic is 792. Just go to a paint store and have them mix you some up. Professional places can even make you some in a spray can.
KIMUTAKU 01-24-2004 01:51 AM

my body shop guy also didn't recommend me painting them...

but i insisted...and he got the job well done..

no chips so far after 1 year..
