ATTN: tinted window owners part 1

ATTN: tinted window owners
I usually never like tinting windows but I'm actually considering it on my WRX. This is a qusetion for all of you that do have any tints on your car. Have you had anyproblems with the tint getting scratched from the window rollers and leaving a 45 degree scrape ont the front windows. I notice that when they get dirty the rollers seem to mark up the windows. I'm wondering if anyone has has tints for a while and can say that it still looks brand new like the glass was tinted. My friend had a BMW that looked like crap from the window roller scratching the plastic tint. All input is appreciated.
TreeSki 03-31-2005 10:57 AM

i've had tints on my car for over a year now and have had no problems with the scratches from the window rollers. it'll get dirty from the rollers every now and then, but nothing a damp cloth won't take right off...go for it.
Dr. Morbid 03-31-2005 11:10 AM

My windows have been tinted for 5 years now, there is a tiny scratch (~2mm) on the rear passenger window tint now. Cannot be seen from the outside, that's it for any blemishes tint-wise. Just be sure to get it done by a pro that backs up their work, nothing worse than getting a super-cheap deal and getting bubbling by the end of the week.
digitalmethods 03-31-2005 11:42 AM

Hey Treeski where did you get yours done?
kidatari 03-31-2005 12:21 PM

I've had my windows tinted for 2 years (Llumar 15% metallic tint) and not a scratch in it, other than when my big toolbox scratched the rear window about half an inch. You can't even see it if you're not looking.

i just saw this topic a few days ago,
i'm a new member, and can't post the url, but if you search for "window scratches", it should be titled "Window Roller Scratches!" and as of today, it was still third down.
i don't have tinted windows, but i do have scratches. mine are really bad, but whoever had it b4 me didn't care, so, i paid for what i got.
-oh, if anyone knows what could be done about window scratches, i'm all ears.
Jric 03-31-2005 04:55 PM

Are there different methods of tinting. What do the pro's use. Is it different than factory tinting?

Well, the "factory" doesn't "tint" the windows in the same sense an aftermarket installer does. From the factory, the actual glass is manufactured to have a different tint level.

All aftermarket tint is a film that is applied to the windows.

Professionals will have a computer assisted machine cut the exact shape for your window, and will apply it in as few pieces as possible. A bad tint place will use 2 pieces for the rear windshield - a good place will use one place.

A good place will have a lifetime warranty, and a good place will not use tint that fades or turns purple. They use llumar or 3m scotchtint (non-metallic, carbon based).

Also a good place will make sure there is no debris on the window before tinting and will make sure there aren't bubbles after a week. Expect to pay anywhere from 175$ - 300$ for a very good, quality job.

The main thing you have to remember with tint is its only as good as the person installing it. Get a nice high quality metallic tint and make sure it is thin enough so that it will not put a strain on your window motors, with tint, you want to go with the most expensive. Anyway, make sure you clean the glass up real good before you get started.

CalcVictim 04-01-2005 08:56 AM

I had tint on my car for maybe a year and no scratches from the winow rollers ..........................................................................................
draggin wagon04 04-01-2005 09:19 AM

RP had the best advice. Ask for the good stuff. Expect to pay. I would post this question in your regional forum to get a good idea of who will do a great job in your area.

I had mine done when I was in TX. After two years it's still great! remember...NO WINDEX to clean 'em!
digitalmethods 04-02-2005 01:48 PM

I know no Windex but can you refresh my memory as to why? I thought it was the amonia or something. Anyways, what do you use on your windows to keep them up?
Diode663 04-02-2005 02:24 PM

Use stoner invisable glass. Safe for tint.

The only problem I've ever had with tinted windows was when other ppl drove my car (wife, etc) and let go of the seatbelt after it unclicked instead of guiding it back to it's retracted position. This resulted in the metal part of the seatbelt smacking the window slightly and putting a sort of "chip" in the tint. You can only notice it from the inside, but it's a bit annoying when you catch little specks of light out of the corner of your eye while driving.

So when you get tint, make sure the seatbelt doesnt hit the window. Never had problems with the roller scratching tho.

Have 20% tint on my 2004 rex for almost two years, and absolutely no problems. Don't worry about it bro. Every vehicle i've ever owned has had tinted windows, alos with no problems.
chris84bond 04-02-2005 09:24 PM

My windows on my 93 were already scrathed when I got the car, but they were on the outside I believe. Put the tint on, the only knick I have isn't a scrape, it's a piece like...cut out...hard to explain, but even harder to notice. Looks excellent tho.

15% all around I believe

My 99 RS has really bad scratches on the tint from the rollers. The scratches were there from the previous owner, so I'm SOL on that... but maybe someday when I care a bit more, I might look into getting the door windows redone.
mindchatter 04-03-2005 11:28 AM

Definitely use Llumar film if you can find a reputable installer local to ya. IIRC Llumar backs their product with a lifetime guarantee in addition to whatever the installer backs his work up with. My car's got 35% all the way around, 18% in rear, and a clear UV "Shield" on the windshield that blocks 99% of all UV rays....with a black car I felt the windshield was worth the extra $80 I spent on it, and it really, really works at keeping the car cooler. The dash gets hot, but not blistering - even after a few hrs in direct sunlight. I spent a total of $320 on my tints, they were the first thing done, and still one of my fave mods in terms of the overall look of my car.

Believe I have Llumar Platinum - has a sorta blueish sheen to it, although it's very subtle. I get a lotta compliments on the tint in particular. :) Oh, and no scratches, anywhere, almost 2yrs and 44k later.

just make sure you get Llumar tint and its not some cheap material....

5% all around

Ask your tint shop for 3M tint. Its a high (if not the highest) quality tint. It also has a warranty to never turn purple. Although one of my stoner friends managed to scrach it somehow, I have never had any other problems.
dan0025 04-04-2005 06:50 PM

I have Llumar tint and it scratched a week later (when I 1st put my window down after letting the tint completely dry). It's got a lifetime warranty so I'll see what happens.
409Industries 04-12-2005 02:27 PM

yeah i have a scratch on the inside of my drivers window from the little rollover dealy inside. its barely noticable (esp on the outside, i have limo tint) i have a 3 year warranty, im just lazy and havent followed up with the tint shop. Ive pulled my door pannels off before maybe i bumped em? i dunno.

Just have quality tint installed by a professional, with a warrenty. The guy who did mine has a lifetime warrenty, and if it ever bubbles, gets scratched, etc, he'll come out and replace it for free.

I've had tint on all my cars (it's almost a requirement here in FL), my parents have had the same tint on their van for almost 15 years and no problems with it at all. My WRX has some small lines on the tint from the roller, but I can rub them off with my finger, not a big deal... they come off when you clean the window.

25% all around (or whatever the legal limit in FL is) plus stripe across the windshield (it really helps, actually):

They definitely get dirty from the rollers but there is not one single scratch on mine. I've had them for almost a year
