AutoX tire width input needed: 04 STi with 7.5" rims
I've searched through various sites looking for info regarding tire sizing on the stock 7.5" rim but what I mostly found was info regarding what tire sizes look good versus what can be used in competition. I'm considering Advan A032R's in soft compound for this coming autoX season and would like to go with their 245/45/17s. However, the Tirerack web site shows the minimum rim width to be 8.0". Yet, Falken shows a minimum of 7.5" for their rt-615s. So, it seems like 245's are 'doable' but not recommended by Yoko for the 245/45s. I understand the issue of bulge and potential loss of sidewall strength if using 245's on a 7.5" rim, but is the added tread width worth the tradeoffs? I am far from smooth, so does the potential to break a bead increase with far-from-smooth transitions? Any input would be appreciated.

I will also be buying a set of RT-615's as daily drivers so it will be interesting to compare the two tires (I'll get them in the same size).

I will be running in SM due to: a) ECUTEK and TBE, and b) no one is running locally in BSP.
04 STi
Front camber: -1.4
Rear Camber: -1.8
JDM pinks

Thanks, Chris

I ran 245-45-17 v710's on my stock BBS's. They fit the wheel fine. If your going to run the yok's I think the 245-40-17 would be better. My 245-45's fit but do rub the front inner fenders.

Don't waste your time on the Yok's. If you're worried about longevity. Go with some Victoracers, they should last you more than a season are much sticker and cheaper than the Yoks.

And get some camber bolts from Dale - I'll help you install them. You NEED more camber in front.

not sure about lasting more than a season? my victoracers dropped off about halfway through the season, corded about 3/4 of the way through.. i guess it depends on how many events you run..

but i agree, i'd take the victoracers any day of the yoks.

i also saw a huge improvement in tire wear once i installed the strano bar.. an added benefit besides the improved handling.

I know of a STU STI driver that won a National Solo2 event using 245/45/17 Azenis's on stock 7.5" wheels ... so that've quite do-able ... but you REALLY should get some relatively inexpensive 8.5" Rota Slipstreams. To bad I just sold my two sets.

Wouldn't more camber increase the likelihood of rubbing on the inside of the tire? I'm just hoping to get 245's on there without any type of rub. Front or back. What size tires are you running on your 04 this year?
trhoppe 12-21-2005 01:22 PM

Yokos run wide, so get the 235. The 245 Yoko is too wide for an 8" wheel :)

Obligatory Hankook > *.* comment

well i don't see why the 245 wouldn't be do able as i run a 245/45/16 on the stock wrx wheels. granted i do put a 1/4 inch spacer to accomodate them
Fred 12-21-2005 04:38 PM

I'll be running the 225/45/17 RE070's until they're gone (shouldn't take much more than the 2nd annual 240SX vs. WRX driftoff at the Test & Tune  ), then the 225/45/17 RT-615's that are currently in use for daily driving.

I'm not fast enough to get 100% from 225's, so 245's would be a waste of money.

There are several guys I know that have run 245s with 3+ degrees negative camber in front without any rubbing issues so the 2.5 degrees or so you will get with camber bolts should be fine.

i'm running 255/40-17 Pirelli Corsas on 17x8 Rotas on my '04 STi. Zero rubbage. I have Tein Flex 10/8 setup, 13.75" ride height. Plenty of room in the back. I only rub a little on the left front fender liner when I come off the last turn at Thunderhill and nip the curb. And i think that fender liner is a little out of place from when i rubbed it during my 275/40-17 Hoosier days.

Kevin..thanks for taking the wind out of my sails! I'm not fast enough to get 100% out of 155/70/17's but plan on getting more rubber anyway. I think your speeds in the STI will have you wanting more lateral grip with the way you'll be entering elements at mach-2.
Fred 12-22-2005 08:05 AM

Hey, if I wanted grip I'd get R compounds, not switch to barely wider street tires. :) I'm looking forward to autoxing the STi this year not because of how fast I can go in it, but because of how much fun I can have going fast sideways.

 I hear ya on the sideways thing... then again, at our driver meetings each race, they make it a point to announce "This is not a drifting event..." boooo! :D
Fred 12-22-2005 01:45 PM

We have a guy in our club named Randy Melton - has a Mustang that he runs in ESP. Used to have a V8 Pinto that sometimes ran FTD. Great - and I mean GREAT! - driver. Year before last, he would bring the Mustang out on bald street tires and drift the entire course from start to finish, and even last year on 315 V710's he would sometimes spin through the finish if it was safe to do so and then do a couple of donuts afterward. Highly entertaining, but the officers had to ask him to tone it down because he was "setting a bad example for the novices."

Sure the Yok's dont have the grip of the Vic's, but as far as longevity, the Yok's will SIGNIFICANTLY outlast the Vic's. So if he's looking for longevity, the yok's are the way to go.

Most people with -3 degrees of camber are getting it with camber plates, those dont affect strut to tire clearance. Doing it through the camber bolt puts the tire closer to the strut which could lead to rubbing issues.

I'm actually just looking for a 'better' tire for AutoX that can be used on 7.5" rims without any kind of modification to make it work. I kind of settled in on the A032Rs since they *can* be driven to events if desired. Plus, GRM August edition, had some good things to say about them with respect to first-timers on R-comps. That's me :) It's now simply a matter of do I try to stay close to stock size or do I/can I upsize without rubbing.

In your case, I like the Yok's. Since you're autoxing for fun, long lasting tires, that are great in the rain, that can be run on the street seem like a good fit for you. No one is going to recommend the "slower tire", well maybe no one except me. Don't rule out the "H" compound either. You're car is heavy, so if you plan on doing any track days (which you REALLY need to try), your tires will last forever.
mx_9 12-22-2005 08:10 PM

I appreciate the input...Thanks. What I meant by 'better' was that I am considering something other than the RE070s that I've been using and it's my understanding that I'll have to go wider to get something that is stickier than them. Pure race tires like Hoosiers are not an option at this point.
corey_dyck 12-23-2005 11:09 AM

A032R's will heat-cycle to death before they run out of tread, but they'll last a fair bit longer than Victoracers.

Toyo RA-1's are about 1/2 way between the two. A little faster than the Yok but wears a little faster. The Toyos keep getting faster until they cord.
ratt_finkel 12-23-2005 11:32 AM

You can drive the Victoracers on the street as well. I still say the Yoks are a waste of money. Sure the tread lasts a long time, but any usable performance will be long gone before that.

Basically, he is looking for a tire that is better than stock (more grip), that he can drive to the event on, drive back home, and change to street rubber. Anything that can take that (100+ mile trips x 8 ) and not heat cycle to death in one season == good

Drakken:: When you had clearance issues, it was on the inside of the tire on a +48 offset 8" rim? You ever run the 255s on the 7.5" (or I missed it)? What alignement settings were you running?

Just trying to help out, Chris ;)

Used Toyo RA-1's for sale here ... 3 to 4 heat cycles. In WRX perfect 235/40/17. I don't think they have other sizes.

http://tinyurl.com/8ro2w

Goto Clearance/Used items at the bottom of that page ... find RA-1's. This company races BMW's in the World Speed Challenge series ... where the RA-1 is the Spec tire.

Two Quality levels, $50 and $100 a piece ... perhaps a good way to try them out.

*ZAP* Alive again :)

Do you just live with the inner fender rub or have you alleviated it somehow? I put 245/45/17 on yesterday and have the inner fender rub up front. It's not a showstopper but I'd like to entertain thoughts on how to get rid of it without going back to stock springs and height.

Instead of turning the steering wheel so far, try using the handbrake. :)

(You're suppose to be helping me here, you know)

I sent Keith Q a PM. He's running 245's on his 04 and I'm curios to see if he has any rubbing.

You either increase roll resitance or increase height. I dont really see any other way around it.
tuskenraider 02-08-2006 01:45 PM

Aren't the stock rims 17x7"?, I keep seeing everyone stating 7.5" wide. I suppose this still won't change tire size recommendations.
afpdl 02-08-2006 01:47 PM

No, 2004 stis were 17x7.5

Based on where it's hitting I don't think adjusting camber will help. It's front-center of the wheel. The plastic guarding juts out a bit and that's where I hit. Maybe we can meet for lunch Fri or Mon and I can show you. Marcus was with me for the first drive after the install and he said it's a height issue.
I'm hoping there's a way to heat the area up to deform the plastic. Or, as Marcus said, just let the tire rub a hole through it :)
