Bent intercooler fin fix for the lazy. part 1

Amazake 03-11-2006 05:07 PM

Bent intercooler fin fix for the lazy.
Does any one know of one? :) I am lazy, and don't feel like using tweezers and toothpick.

I find it hard to believe that a "rake" or quick solution hasn't been made yet.
Maybe, I am searching in the wrong places?

Tweezers actually work the best. Clip the bent fin and pull straight up, works wonders...

If you're lazy, clean and repair once, then invest in a screen.

im sure they have something at autozone that fits your needs...
Amazake 03-11-2006 05:37 PM

Gus-

those radiator fins are much finer/ tighter than the intercooler and I don't think they line up
DiscoWagon 03-11-2006 06:36 PM

screwdriver works pretty well.

/\ That's what I do. Just stick a slotted screwdriver between the fins and gently bend them back.
DrD 03-11-2006 10:08 PM

I just use a really fine screwdriver, too. I bet one of the little doo-dads they make for radiator fins would work well, too.

+4 for flathead screwdriver!
HiVoltg12 03-12-2006 03:53 PM

I use a small drill bit....
natoli4 03-12-2006 11:16 PM

two flatblade screwdrivers...one in each hand. sandwich each thin piece of aluminum fin in between each screw driver and slide back and forth.

Chopsticks = the JDM winning way!! (j/k, but who knows it might work)

Found a radiator fin straightener at Harbor Freight for like $2.50. It has 5 different spacing options and it works perfect. Fixes about 8 or so fins at a time.

edit - that eastwood one is the same as the harbor freight one only 5x the price.

It has been, but it works like garbage. I use a 90 degree pick.

The rakes work like garbage because our fins are not parralel. They go at angles, and the rake will physically rip several loose at a time.
fokai 03-13-2006 01:33 PM

sell yours and buy a used one in good condition.... but that probably takes more work than tweezers.

Like someone else said, those things are meant for radiators, not Subie intercoolers.
Make7upyours728 07-08-2006 08:17 AM

question on this, do you bend them while the IC is still hot after driving, or when it has cooled down or like 1st thing in the morning??
offset 07-08-2006 08:20 AM

Whenever.

DrD 07-08-2006 08:27 AM

yup - doesn't matter when - hot, cold, whatever.
IronMonkeyL255 07-08-2006 09:02 AM

I fixed mine with the i/c sitting on my floor.....
turbo tecnica 07-08-2006 10:10 AM

Add me to the list of +1 for flathead screwdrivers.
livnlegacy 07-08-2006 10:19 AM

yep, +1 small (eyeglasses type) flathead screwdriver...I have one that's the perfect diameter for the round end of the fin openings...
WRXSIG 07-08-2006 10:51 AM

screw driver or needle nose...whatevers closer when im around...

its actually very easy to do with a screwdriver/tweezers. Very quick too
pezcore 03-24-2014 10:46 PM

I used the little nail file attached to metal nail clippers. Fit in there perfectly. Still took a while.

Basically lazy and fixing these do not mix.
