First Rally Cross .... too easy
I went to the last local rally cross. Me and 2 friends rented a auto 4 cylinder Galant for the event. It was in a gravel parking lot with some very deep gravel pits in it. Some cars were getting stuck in the gravel. In the morning each lap was very tight and jerky and lasted about 1.7 minutes. In the afternoon they changed the course to make it flow better, and each lap only lasted about 1.3 minutes.
All three of us were in the car for every run, either driving or riding. We had the A/C going full blast, and the stereo cranked making the engine overheat by the end of each run. There was about 26 competitors and of course I was in the street tire class (forgot what it was called). At the end of the day I was just 0.3 minutes off of the fast time of day and over a full minute ahead of many of the regulars on Michelin Rally tires.
It was fun having all of us driving the same car. It was also fun beating up on a rental. We killed that poor car, scrathes all over it, mangled body work, and ripped up tires. But over all, I don't think I want to do rally-x again just because it was too easy and there was a certain competitiveness missing. Besides that, I never want to beat my car like I beat that rental. We were getting a foot of air with the front tires under throttle at times. Why is it I can beat regulars in fully built Audi AWD cars on rally tires my first time out in a rental front drive 4 cylinder Galant? Boring

I am not sure what is so amusing about destroying someone elses property but hey... guess that's what's wrong with this country.

Hey, I paid for the insurance
Besides that, I thought thats what rental existed for. That is why you NEVER buy a rental.
And Scoobyslack, you have a turbo, I thought that automatically makes you fast :D

I don't think he'd finish dead last he IS a good driver.
He has been autoX for a while and I think it surprised him that those skills crossed over so easily to gravel where you slip and don't grip.
I if you look at the autoX results for that region, STS is always very close and at the top ten of the PAX every time.
So don't be pushing that "we been doing it longer, so we must be better at it" line.

whoa.. hold on a sec...
and i am not saying he cant drive... i would never imply such a horrid thing... without first riding along ;)
i was merely inviting him to come try out one of our little meager contests... and test his skills... he was complaining... whining about the course being too easy, and having no competition...
well come on up any time!! our courses are a pain in the butt! and the entry list is filled w/full time rally drivers...
it really is good stuff... and fun!
dont take my reply the wrong way... it wasnt intended to be cynical....

Thanks Scooby :D
I wish we had good places to do these rally crosses, it may completely change the results. I actually, I would expect to finish dead last in a rental Galant with A/C going on stock tires. I have no problems with losing. And actually we have a couple cars I would really like to see run on a big open course where they could get flying.

He wasn't saying he could kick anyones ass, but that in HIS region the level of driving has not risen very high yet.
And did you notice Ryan24 that they weren't driving a car that has been prepared/designed for ralling

1 foot of air? According to SCCA rallyx rules, your not allowed to have any loss of contact of the wheels to the ground.... Are you SURE you were getting 1 FOOT of air?
--Roy
--Roy
| Spectre23 | 08-10-2001 10:29 AM |
The air wasn't coming from jumps, it was coming from plowing through holes that were developing in the gravel. So it wasn't really course designers fault, it was the sights fault for having deep gravel pits.
| Subie Gal | 08-10-2001 10:31 AM |
then the "organizers" should have stopped the event..
this is in violation of the SCCA Rallycross rules...
whenever we get deep ruts or holes in our course...
we halt the event and re route the course...
a FOOT of air... yeah.. *cough* ok....

The Utah rallyx are pathetic IMHO. It is absolutely nothing compared to the rallyx I attended last year at SEMA. We need to find somewhere out here where we can do 45mph drifts and race to the finish line. Matter of fact, they are nothing similiar to ANY other rallyx I have seen.
Atleast they are trying though.
Spectre, was Lincoln W. racing there in his white RS?
If'n I am ever up in WA, I'll take you up on that offer Jamie :D

Yes, Lincoln was in his RS. He is fun to watch, but not near as fast on time as watching him would lead you to believe.
As for the air, it wa getting that much, just on the front end, the rear never left the ground. It was bad enough people at the worker station on the other end of the course could see that it was getting very high in the air. I think it was mostly because that heavy pig of a car was pushing out past the race line and we were where we weren't meant to be.
And Stimpy is right, it is a very feable attempt by the Utah region for rally-x. I had so much fun down in Vegas though I was too busy playing elsewhere in the dry lake bed to run the rally-x event there. I just couldn't stop doing 80 - 90 mph e-brake drifts :D Never could pull of that dang 360 though, but lots of 180's.

Air? banged up body work? scratches? Must be a terribly designed course. My 87 made it through its first rally X with little more than afew spots of mud on the paint and some mud/grass under the wheel wells.
I agree, we know how to make REAL courses up here, they are fun, challenging and most important dont hurt the car :D

You should have seen the results from the rally-x before the one I went to. Only about 1/2 the cars came away without at least minor damage like bumpers falling off. Several didn't even make it out under their own power. It wasn't at the gravel site, it was at a site they decided not to use because it was too hard on cars.

Sounds like you had fun. Thats what it is really all about.
If you are in Utah, then it would be an easy trip for you to come to Arizona and do the rally-x here in September. You could even bring a rental to it!! You will get to drive on the exact same Super Special Stage that the Pro-Rally and Club-Rally competitors will be on for the SCCA Prescott Forest Rally. Then you can compare your times to their times and see if it is really as easy as you think.
Here are the particulars: Arizona Rally-X
Hope to see you there!
Mike
PS- Be sure and click both links for good information.
