GOTO Racing, Grand Am Cup, TORNADO!?!?!

Hello,
Earthquakes are better than tornadoes. I wanna go back to California...
So, I'm sitting in the motorhome right now, waiting out the current storm. We just had a tornado hit the track during our practice session. What carnage. The twister hit our car during a hot session and shoved it over a few feet and tore off the sideskirts. Dirt and water was flying horizontally right through the car.
One of the Playboy pit cars actually got picked up and knocked over right at the pit wall - what a mess. Then park benches started flipping over and flying through the paddock. Canopies started flipping off the big trailers - some of the Rolex teams with their sweet massive rigs are really sad campers. Their canopies sheered right off their trailers and some of them smashed against the trailers and make poky holes along their sides.
We charged back to the paddock to find our canopies lifting up against their straps. As the canopy started taking off, one of our guys (Tommy, I'd guess at least 220 lbs) jumped up to grab it. I watched as his feet lifted off the ground and he started taking off. Two more guys jumped on to pull down the canopy, but the wind was so strong, updrafting, and then slamming the canopy down, that the legs bent. As they bent, the tension came off the straps that tie down the canopy and the canopy started to free itself. And of course, the bent legs became impossible to pull out of the joints...
We ended up having to climb up the frame to release the tarp - I looked like a monkey hanging off the frame undoing the bungee loops. We totally lost one of the canopies, but we had no real damage to anything else (aside from the car's skirts).
There is total carnage throughout the paddock, though. It's a massive cluster for most of the teams. Awnings, canopies, pit cars, satellite dishes, flags, antennas, fluorescent lights, etc., all strewn about the place.
Aight, anyway, weather calmed down, time to go assess the damage / fix broken stuff :D
What a wierd practice session for a race...

Geez, glad you guys are ok. I'm driving from NorCal to KC and back over the next few days to pick up an old Fiat 128 vintage race car. I'm hoping for less dramatic weather.

Hello,
So, a quick tour of the track showed us that all the portapotties are on their sides, pointing east, and the track is shut down while crews remove all the trees that are on-course. Oh! We found our side skirts against a fence, so we have them back :D
Rumor has it that a big rig trailer fell over in the grassy part of the paddock. We're a little too busy to go find it but later on we should have some pictures of the various stuff we saw - maybe some in-car too. Craziness...

Hello,
I heard from Marshall that one of his friends (at the track this weekend) told him that "most of the big hospitality tents were sucked away, most ez-up's were picked up and sent tumbling throughout the track, most teams with proper 'attached to the trailer' type awnings were ripped from their trailer mounts, and a number of GrandAm team's big/expensive timing stands ($15K for the stand, another $10K in flatscreens, computers, etc) were flipped over, etc. [... And a crew guy...] that works on [one of the] GAC team was in the [] pits when this happened [], and one of those 1000lb $25K pit boxes fell on him, breaking his shoulder and arm."
We left the track at 11pm and just about everyone from GAC and MidOhio seemed to be running around in trucks, cars, and golk carts with flashing lights. We saw a bunch of trees being removed on tow trucks, etc.
We came back to town and it's a mess everywhere. Trees laying about all over town, people's yards, etc.
We have tornado warnings all over the area for at least the next 24 hours. Crazy weekend.

I still can't get the picture out of my head of coming around the last bend in the pit entrance, and seeing the war zone that was the pit lane. Awnings flying everywhere, people flying everywhere :), I wanted to go back out on track. I felt much safer out there in the car where nothing could hit me!
I was also pretty pumped that we found the side skirt for the car. I was pretty sure I new where it came off. It was right about the time that the car lurched to the side about 2 feet from the first gust of wind. Sure enough, when I went out to the fence from next to that that spot on the track, there it was stuck to the fence on TOP of the tire barrier!
Looking forward to some better weather tomarrow, but according to the locals, we can expect more of the same tomorrow.

Joel,
Do the people running the Grand Am Cup or the track not have weather stations?? It seems like very poor form that no one was warned about the on coming weather. At least 5 races I have been to now the officials came around and told everyone to put stuff away and pull down tents because of tornado warnings. This mess sounds ridicules to have happened with out some kind of a warning. Hope everything goes well for you guys from here on out.

A not so good update...
Two GS cars, a Mustang and a 350Z, decided to try to make it 4 wide on the front straight as chris was already passing another ST car :furious: . The mustang impacted the right side causing the car to spin and impact the Z on the left side. The A-arm, tie rod, and shock are smashed and the fender and headlight have seen better days :(. We have a great crew though and they are thrashing to get us back out on track for the next session.
Everyone cross your fingers that it did not do any frame damage and the car will drive straight when we get it back together. More updates soon...

Hello,
Brian makes it so cut and dry... The Mustang decided to go wide and saw Chris move out of his way a little bit, so he (Mustang driver) explained to us that he thought we'd just get out of his way. Err... So when the Playboy 350Z decided to try to make a 4-wide pass through a turn, Chris got pinched - the Mustang was moving outwards and the 350Z was on the outside, so with nowhere to go, Chris got smacked by the Mustang, flew out into the 350Z, got spun around by the 350Z, and ended up in the grass. It's quite exciting and Chris, a normally completely reserved guy who never says anything crazy... let those guys know how he felt about their bonehead moves. It's great stuff - we'll try to digitize the video and post it up :D
The Mustang got fixed but unfortunately, the 350Z was a total. I hear they _just_ finished fixing that car from their wrecks at Laguna, too.
We thrashed... The damage was pretty extensive - in fact, so extensive that our spares weren't sufficient. We had to rely on... an innocent bystander/fan :p We propped his car up and borrowed everything we didn't have enough spares for, and rebuilt the corner.

A big hammer and some prybars also helped to straighten the mangled corner.

To make a long story short (long = 4 hours to get the car drivable), we fixed the mess, got the car ready, and made it out to our next practice. We replaced everything! The brake rotors looked cracked, so we put new ones on. The car was good to go.
We then decided that Brian would drive the car to qualify, so we sent him out for a practice. He made it two turns. That's another great video that we'll try to post up. He gets to the second corner, there's a big CRACK and then a sharp POP!
What kind of luck is that? A new rotor exploded. The shattered rotor pierced the rim and exploded the wheel!

If only our luck was that good, though... the damage didn't end there. The big mess bent the brake caliper bracket, the shock body (making it the second body we replaced in the same day), the knuckle, etc. We pretty much replaced everything that was left after the accident and some things twice!
So, we sent Brian off to qualify without any practice on Saturday. During the practice that we missed because of the exploding rotor, the rest of the field improved by several seconds, and they were turning times about 4 seconds faster than the fastest lap we'd turned so far (we never had clean lapping time in the dry, given the rain sessions, etc. I told Brian: "Do whatever it takes to knock 4 seconds off your time, break the car if you have to, if you don't make the qualification cut, we go home tonight."
Hahaha... Brian took me literally, and punched out the time we needed, qualifying us in 19th, and somehow, managing to break the car! :p Well, he worked it hard enough that he killed the once-heat cycled qualifying tires and heated up some hoses up so much that they got soft and mushed themselves free enough that we were losing boost through them. Argh! We so want GAC to let us use silicon lines for reliability... (at least the turbo-inlet hose and the intercooler-to-throttlebody hose!).
A little more work and the car is ready to go. We nut and bolted the car from head to toe and pretty much touched every single part on the car. We're good to go for tomorrow and now I gotta get some sleep.
More news tomorrow!
Oh, and a special thanks go out to the ICY/Phoenix guys - they got us many of the spare parts we needed to fix up our fan's car!
More pictures and video either tomorrow or Monday from the road back to California. Right now, I only have one of the crew cameras, not the drivers' cameras, so I can't post their pics.

Don't waste your time with a silicon turbo inlet hose, we kept collapsing ours in our world challenge car and went back to the stock plastic piece. Was kind of a bitch trying to figure out why the car would go silent and almost shut down the motor just as Mike would go into boost. ..unless you get the one with the metal reinforcment rings in it.

Looks like Racing Brake... Ive always wondered about drilling through the thinnest part of the rotor and then adding more stress points to that "weakest part"... RB always said it would hold up...

Hello,
We really have no idea what the brake failure was. It is quite possible that the caliper slider got bent during the accident and we simply didn't see that, which then led to the rotor overheating or being stressed, etc. Or it could have been something else that we haven't thought of yet. We hope to know more once we have time to examine everything closely... Obviously, if there is a chance that a part was bent that we didn't see, the way to avoid this in the future is going to be to simply replace the entire corner after an accident that affects the corner so significantly.

Obviously, if there is a chance that a part was bent that we didn't see, the way to avoid this in the future is going to be to simply replace the entire corner after an accident that affects the corner so significantly.
