Fitting Nukabe tow hooks

I know where the rear one fits, but how do you do the front one, anyone have any help on it?
Do you need to remove the front bumper etc?
Thanks

They fit on the right side (as you look at the front bumper) if you want to mount to the traditional location...and yes, you must cut. Some people have removed the fogs and relocated the hooks there (on the subfame).

How did d money and blly boi fits theirs through the radiator opening?
| 4wdrift | 01-01-2007 06:27 PM |
You have to ask them but I imagine the just had a triangulated bracket welded together and bolted to the bumper beam mount (to make them functional) or they just made a non-functional bracket and bolted the tow hook to it. Most tow hooks you buy will come with a few brackets. If you want functionality, just make sure you mount the assembly correctly.

Simply to tow them. After they break down or some use them at the drag tracks so that they don't have to keep the car running after a run, they can just tow it back to the pits...

so they can be towed off the track quickly so the race can be continued quickly without much delay

ok thats what i was thinking thanks

lets be realistic here...who actually is making enough power to be worried about their car breaking down at the track. most these wannabe's get the tow hooks for looks; honestly. and there happens to be a purpose for them so might as well put that in there. this post is equipped with a flame suite!

I think you should put a flame suit on for what you just said. You don't know what these guys have. Why is it your responsibility to flame someone for asking how to install a part correctly? I think you better just stay out of it and not worry about stuff like this.....Especially if you can't give a helpful answer:rolleyes: ;)
As for the tow hooks. I would not use a bolt on tow hook for a race car because of it strength capabilities. Real race cars have the tow hooks welded to the frame. Nukabe tow hooks are very stout but they are made for more show than the real use. I would use something like this....

while this is a more expensive option this will more likley hold up to the rigors of towing a vehicle off the track. If you want just a showy option use the Nukabe... no problem there.

Naps USA shows the tow hook being install on the underside of the bumper beam like so. I think this would be the strongest for this type of tow hook. You could also make a bracket for it as stated earlier but I wouldn't test it as being a strong way to tow.

Again, you can attatch it to the bumper beam but if you have done any amount of towing, you would realize that after a short period of time you will develop stress fractures in setups that are not triangulated into the frame, leading to premature failure of the bumper beam and or towhook etc... It's not that complicated really. Just make sure you are triangulated directly into the forward framerail (which would be 8-10 inches to the right in the above picture).
Remember, if you are towing with the towhook, it's only for short distances and durations anyway so it doesn't need to be a hitch.

as i recall correctly, every wrx/sti comes with a tow hook or at least a place for it. i know for the 02-03's you have a square in the front bumper that pops out to screw one on and the 04-05's have a hook in the rear on the passenger side. worthless accessory? i think so...but it'll probably score you some jdm brownie points at car shows!

Our cars dont come with "tow" hooks they are tie down hooks.
The SCCA does not recognize them as tow hooks.
Get your head out of your arse, speak only if you know what you are talking about. You should probably just spend your time hanging out in the "Newbie" section.

Tow hooks come in handy all the time when we Ice race in the winter time. most of the time you cant get under the car due to the snow and you have to use some sort of tow hook. They arnt all for super fast tuner track cars...

True Story.
I was in NC with a group of Subaru's and this kid went off the side of road into a ditch. When the tow truck driver came he through the hitch lines down into the ditch and attached them to the kids "TOW HOOK".
When he pulled the car up it ripped the front bumper off teh car. See the kid just bolted it to the bumper for looks and never told teh tow truck driver. He even tried giving the tow guy an attitude, you can imagine how that went over.
Good times were had by all!!!

um, sure they do. just pop off the pass fog cover and you will see a hole there for the factory tow hook (which is located in your subaru tool kit, usualy located in your trunk :D )

At my first track event several years ago, the instructor told me that the reason I need good tow hooks is because a track worker will hook onto whatever they think will connect to their tow strap. If that is your radiator, pulleys, belts, hoses, steering parts, etc, then that is tough kaka for you. By giving these guys a good quality and identifiable tow locations, you have much less chance of car damage due to their "creative" choice of tow locations.
BTW, it's not just blown-up hi-po cars that need tows, it's usually guys who have gone off and hurt something or who have actually run out of gas! People dont factor in 5mpg on the track when they get 15-20 on the street which is proof again that even aggressive street driving isnt the same as track use, but that's for another discussion.

my car has 2 hooks under the front bumper but those are just tie down hooks. but on the front bumper passenger side there is a plastic cap. underneath is a threaded hole where u can insert the factory hook for towing. the rear has a hook on the passenger side under the bumper that hangs down low enough for a strap. i wouldnt trust any of these tow points for hardcore pulls but should be enough to get out of the snow banks or the gravel at the tracks.

It has nothing to do how much power you make, or if your driving a stock hyundia...if you wreck on the track they can pull you out easier and faster..
certian tracks have ditches off the side of the couse, say you crash into a ditch a tow hook will make it 10x's easier for the tow truck to do its job

best part is you flame someone, and then are wrong! yep, they come with a towing eyelet. around page 9-16 in my owners manual it gives detailed instructions about how to tow a stuck or disabled car using said tow eye. They also advise NOT to use that for any lateral load, so if you tried to use that as a tiedown you would bend the hook or the bumper.
The transport tiedows are entirely different chunks of metal, and aren't what people are talking about here.

I'd hate for people to think that Nukabe Tow Hooks are just for looks and not for function. We went that extra step and tested our tow hook and bolt strength.
