Best place to purchase Yakima & Thule roof racks? part 1

Best place to purchase Yakima & Thule roof racks?
Does anyone have any recommendations on where to purchase these products?

I went to REI but they sell them at MSRP.

Are there any great sources online to pick the parts up?

i was looking here: http://www.orsracksdirect.com/

i haven't bought anything from them so i can't comment on service or anything, but their prices are great.
mbiker97 03-01-2005 01:40 PM

Yakima forces vendors to sell at MSRP unless they are having a sale. Support your local bike shop and buy it from them.

they have the lowest price I've found so far.

Is one better than the other? Thule vs. Yakima?

They are pretty much the same. I have the Yakima, and I have no complaints about its operation. Make sure you get the wind deflector, otherwise it will whistle.

long term, has anyone noticed wear on the paint? or damage to the weather stripping?

Any negative effects for roofracks if installed properly?
mcowger 03-01-2005 10:24 PM

Gas mileage. Slightly increased wind noise.

Seriously consider performancebike.com. They have comparable roof racks that include locks and 2 fork mount bike trays all for around $150. I have them on my car and I've had them for almost 2 years. I ended up buying separate Thule snowboard carriers which fit perfectly on the PerformanceBike racks. They've been holding up well in the rain and snow too

As much as I hate hippies, just get them at REI (or your LBS). If you dont like them or you need something different, you can always take it back, they usually run a Yakima sale once or twice a year where you can get 20% off all rack stuff, and if you sign up for their membership, you get a dividen return at the end of the year (based on how much you spent, and other business factors). Plus you wont have to ship those big damn boxes.

All in all, just get it local. Hippies need to eat too.

This is where I got my setup. No tax , free shipping over certain amount spent, quick delivery. located in Vermont. Plus they had the best prices. If you find a price thats cheaper they might do better, they did it for me once also I was a returning customer but you dont know till you ask. The service is great. love my setup. set up for my bike and skis.

redhammer082: have you noticed any damage to your roof paint or insulation on the inside where the rack latches onto? Do you keep it on rear round or take it off from time to time?
redhammer082 03-02-2005 12:59 PM

rack
ill3ck - Everything is a perfect fit just a little rubbing on outer molding but nothing really drastic, not bad enough that would make me keep it off. The Q-Towers are what rest on the car with a rubber insert, directions tell you where to place them. The clip that comes down and latches to the car hooks up great. No rubbing or ware. It slips under the rubber molding. I've had the rack on for two years. I leave it on all year except when neading that good wax and sometimes when I wash it. Two people to install makes it alot easier. On the site there is a fittment guide specificly for your year make and model, very simple to use. I'll take some close up pic. to show you. Any other questions just ask.

I have a two Yakima bike racks for the WRX that's just sitting in the garage collecting dust. If anyone is interested, PM me and I can give you further details...
af9000 03-03-2005 11:19 AM

Okay, this may seem like a silly question, but bare with me. Our doors have no upper trim, so do you find that the rack mounts interfere with the windows at all? Obviously for the racks to be marketable there wouldn't be any issues, but I'm curious to know from those who own. Anyone had any issues with them at all? (I'm looking at getting a rack so I can cart around my snowboard and stuff)

BTW, nice front & rear lips there redhammer
mcowger 03-03-2005 12:36 PM

If installed correctly, at least with the yakima racks, the clips do not interfere with the windows. I have mine installed, its completely stable, and I can roll the windows all the way up just fine, as well as close the door without concern of the window hitting the clips.
DieselClown 03-03-2005 04:28 PM

question, can some shmuck just come and pull it off my car if I bought one/? i just bought my gf a new mountain bike and wanted to go up to a few trails upstate and this would come in handy. is yakima better than thule? any specific roof racks I shoulod look into for my 05 wrx? I'd use it primarily for 2 bikes and snowboards.
mcowger 03-03-2005 04:33 PM

If you get the locksfor the Q Towers, no, they would have to cause pretty severe damage to the car or the rack to get it off.

Yakima isn't better than Thule, nor is Thule better than Yakima. THey all have the same features. If you go to yakima.com, and plug in your type of car, they will tell you what all you need to buy. make sure that if you have bikes with disc brakes you get the bike racks that are compatible with disc brakes (for Thule I think its the Viper V2).

I purchased all my rack components from them and usually received free shipping plus a discount.

anyone looking for a rack i took the advice of an earlier poster and checked out ageebike.com. Turns out I was able to configure a full rack for my legacy 2.5gt + surfboard attachment for $300 shipped!!! :D
IntraWRX 03-04-2005 05:05 PM

i have yakima rack as well. the windows all close properly and the rack doesn't interfere with the door closing. however, the rubber pads leave marks on the car, but they polish out. i also have a yakima snoboard rack, but no wind deflector/fairing, and there is no whistling, with 2 or 4 snowboards up there. however, you can hear the wind more so than before.

on a side note, the springs on my snowboard rack died, so the rack doesn't open up on its own now. i've heard of this happening to other people with yakima racks as well.
