Why do they take off the roof skin?
Draken 08-03-2005 09:06 PM

To make room for Hoppe's fat ass

*hugs*
leecea 08-03-2005 11:02 PM

Plus, how else to weld around the roof tubes?
bjorn240 08-03-2005 11:14 PM

I wonder what Eugene did the next day? I love that series of photos, though. It really does give you a sense of what all goes into building a proper rally car.

You have a couple fairly popular ways to get the cage close to the roof... pull the roof skin off so you can get to the topside welds of all the bars that hug the roof. Or you can build the cage a few inches below the room and then weld it to boxes that lift it up into position. Mitch Piper does that a lot on his cages, the boxes left the main main structure up into position and the main hoop floor mounts are usually welded to the floorboard, rocker panel and fender. It's also pretty common to chop holes in the floor, build the cage, then lift it up into position reinforced the floor/rocker with large thick backup plates.
LegacySE 08-03-2005 11:43 PM

so they can weld the tube w/o making a big hole in the bottom for the cage to sink down and rewelding everything/weakening things

awesome series of pics...thanks!

<----wishes he could weld

How hard is it to take the roof skin off of a car? Say, if a certain someone wanted to get rid of his sunroof and replace it with a standard Impreza roof.

the cage welds look good but the body welds aren't that pretty :X

I didn't notice, how were they doing the cage? we TIG our FSAE cage which looks very similar:banana:
ChrisDP 08-04-2005 11:08 AM

It appears they TIG all the tube joints and MIG all the body welds. explains why the body welds are oooogly in comparison :)
Protege Menace 08-04-2005 11:21 AM

even so, I can lay a 6" MIG joint that looks as good/better than TIG

but stitch welding doesnt have to be pretty. and there is sooo much that has to be done that i can see why it would look the way it does.
Predwolf 08-04-2005 01:12 PM

Wow.

I'll be getting a cage put in the two in about a year or 2. I don't have the resourses or skills to weld that..so I guess I'm handing it off to a good shop that knows what they're doing.
DGTLLVR 08-04-2005 01:28 PM

That interior is SO SEXY. I want a jungle gym in my car. :disco:
TimStevens 08-04-2005 02:57 PM

Any mention of cost? ;)

Looks nice. Where's the finished product?
cyRally 08-04-2005 05:41 PM

The finished product just finished 3rd Overall at the Maine Forest Rally, with Ken Block driving.

The car in those photos was built for Pastrana in 2004 and sold to Block in 2005. It is now camo white/gray DC Shoes Subaru.

It's neat to have, but it's a pain to work on. :)

VT Car does way cool work. Our chassis does not look as sexy as that. (but then again, it did not cost the same either). :)

Ahh, I've seen it. IMHO the DC shoes cars look great.
mykrrrr 08-04-2005 10:26 PM

The roof skin is held on by spot welds and adhesive.

Spot welds are many and a PITA. That was my summer @ Autosport last year...drilling out spot welds to remove excess bits on a Grp. N shell. They make a neat air tool for it though.

VT Car does do good work. AE does good work. JC's car is still dead secksay because it's a prepped rally car. Jungle gyms are a PITA to work around. That is all...

sportz135 08-05-2005 01:40 PM

is that the same DC shoes subaru that participated in the gumball rally?
Osgood30 08-05-2005 01:51 PM

No its not. But that car (that was in Gumball) was there. His wife was driving it around, not racing, just driving it around.
