From rally-live.com:
Will Burns make a come-back at Subaru?
Maybe as soon as next season [10/03/03 - 19:50]

David Lapworth, manager of Team Subaru, announced that if Tommi Makinen - official Subaru driver - decides to retire at the end of this season, he will ask his former World Rally Champion Richard Burns to take his seat.

Makinen mentioned that he may decide to retire at the end of this year, which also coincides with the end of his Subaru contract. The contract between Richard Burns and French team Peugeot is also coming to an end this year, meaning that the British driver becomes the number one target of the Japanese constructor and his manager David Lapworth.

"Subaru's goal for 2004 is clear: to be able to fight for both the driver's and the constructor's championships. It would be good to keep Tommi in the team or have another driver with the same potential and have a young driver to drive the third car.", said David Lapworth.

He also added: "Richard Burns is the ideal teammate for Petter Solberg. With his experience, Richard will always be one of the fastest driver in the championship and he will always be in a position to fight for the driver's championship and to score points for his team."

"There are a lot of drivers without a contract for 2004. There may be major changes in the driver line-ups next year. This may lead to surprising new developments!", concluded David Lapworth.
hmmm third car...

I hope so, Burns had already left Subaru by the time I got into WRC, yet I love the 2001 WRC Subaru Season book I got at the dealership when I bought the car. I really hope he comes back!!!

He did mention that he was more confortable in a Subaru than the Peugeot 206. I think underneath it all, his heart still beats to a boxer rhythm.

Yeah, Burns has hinted a couple times how he wants to be with Subaru again. He just doesn't like the Peugeot and he's a bit upset that he is not the #1 driver.

It would be nice to see Tommi come back next year. He really hasn't been productive out their in the races, but he's been extremely helpful to Solberg. Burns would never help out Solberg, he was always so secretive.

I think getting Burns would be like taking a step backwards, not forwards.

Does any one have a list of all the drivers whose contracts run out this year? It would be nice to see who is up for grabs. :D
TimStevens 03-11-2003 08:08 AM

Well, if that stupid new rule goes through that each team can only have 2 drivers that have won rallies, Carlos would definitely be on the market, and I think he'd make a great addition to the team. Frankly, Burns seemed to act like a child when he was at Subaru, but he's been much more likable @ Peugeot this year, so maybe he wouldn't be so bad if he came back...
Thug 03-11-2003 08:57 AM

Id rather see Tommi stick around.
toerag 03-11-2003 09:42 AM

Scoobynet have just had an interview with David, to see the transcripts take a look at this thread on scoobynet
johnfelstead 03-11-2003 06:39 PM

It's the scoobynet interview that WRC.com are quoting.

I remember that day Jamie, it threw it down but you didnt seem to care. ;):D
WRXedUSA 03-11-2003 08:16 PM

I guess if Burns comes back they will have to invest in the $35 STi kleenex box for him.

Wah Wah, Wah Wah Wah Wah.. my car is not right today....WEah Wah Wah..

Thats the last thing Subaru needs back. I'd take Ericsson before him
DJ 9iron 03-11-2003 08:44 PM

Granted I like Tommi alot, but, Burns doesn't DNF ever other race. Yeah, he hasn't won any either, but finishing is better than not.
I think it would be cool if Burns came back.
They need to make a rule that allows 3 team cars to score points.
Then we can have Tommi, Petter, and Burns scoring points!!!
we will only wait and see.
jesse370 03-11-2003 11:33 PM

The only issue with allowing a three car team to get points is that the french cars would end up getting all the points.:(

Why?
If the teams got all re-arranged with new drivers, who's to say Subaru wouldn't come out on top?
Craig W 03-12-2003 01:28 PM

I'd prefer to see Marko Martin or Sebastian Loeb w/ Subaru.

It'd be really cool to see Marcus Gronholm try out Subaru to see how much the car plays a part in his success. I'd love to see what he could do w/ a Subaru. I know, I know, he's too good to like, and he's probably not going anywhere. Just wondering.
sube151 03-12-2003 04:42 PM

Yup, Sebastian Loeb would be cool. He's got good potential.
shrieden 03-12-2003 10:29 PM

Comeon, they point of this is to win championships, and Burns can still do that. Unless TM gets his act together, and gels with the car it will be time for him to leave. Burnsie is capable of bringing the results home. As Gronholm has been saying, Burns is probably his biggest challenger.
Jewbaru 03-14-2003 12:58 PM

I think Burns and Petter may get along better. I've seen more than a few interviews where Burns has congratulated Petter, and even said "he deserves this" in regards to Petter beating him out one event.
MstrDC 03-14-2003 01:12 PM

Actually, Solberg just commented that he would like to see Makinen back.

Solberg has said in the past Burns does not help him with setting up the car. Burns will do testing but won't relay any information to Solberg, Makinen does though.

I really hope Makinen stays. It's just he's had terrible luck. He and Solberg have had a lot of mechanical problems the last 2 years. The Subaru just isn't very reliable, but it's getting there now.
