SportsCar "Who Will Win?"

Issue arrived today. Hoppe to repeat as STX champ, with Courtney in second and Josh as a challenger. Tommy picked to win ESP and Joel also mentioned amongst the Evo drivers in ESP. Jen picked as a close second to Julie who was given the nod because of home field advantage in STXL. Corey and Billy mentioned as hoping for rain in STS. I think that's the extent of the NASIOC crew that are mentioned in the article.
Comments? Thoughts? Trash talking?
Personally since Tom isn't planning to run STX this year I think we can go ahead and print up a "SportsCar Was Wrong" shirt for someone in STX.
EDIT: For those now reading this, I don't often manage to equate your NASIOC name with you if you don't drive a Subaru and I apologize for leaving anyone out. If you've got a problem with me forgetting you then I suggest you buy me a beer or two at Topeka and we can then discuss the issue.

Bauer to win in BS, sorry KC, you aren't even mentioned. Strano in MR2, Carter in the Z and Goeke, Isley, Noll and Sharp in the 8 are mentioned but no love for the old STX crew.

Sorry Josh, I just report 'em. Last we talked to him it sounded like Courtney may not do Nationals in STX so you may be the only one mentioned who actually competes in STX. If you win you can come for some love to Club Orleans with us this year.

Just comparing times and how people have been running my pick is Fiedler. In a S2000 with only a front bar and sticky tires he's been beating Wynveen by over a second and won Peru by about a half a second.
He's been really driving the car well this year at the local Milwaukee events.
He also won the short lived car and driver challenge in chicago by 4 seconds so he must be fast. :D

ESP already mentioned, Pulliam to win but Jorgensen, Meredith and Botkin from the pony car crowd mentioned and John T, Stremler, Navid and Joel mentioed from the rallye car crowd.
SM. Tunnell to win with Sias, Richardson, Reitmeir and Daddio mentioned.

Side note: Hoppe didn't get a picture but did get a big old caption: "Odds are that we'll see a WRX at the top of STX and Tom Hoppe will be at the wheel of that WRX" If having one of only 4 highlighted blurbs doesn't inflate his head...well I guess since we know his head is already inflated we don't need to continue that thought.

I feel for ya Josh. West Coast guys never get the love. Finish 5th at Nationals and win a Tour this year and I don't even get an honorable mention. Sheesh! I guess we need to go after the "SportsCar was Wrong" t-shirts.
Wynveen, Saini, and I all have the same problem: No seat time! I've spent 6 whole days in the S2000 this year (including the 2 days of Packwood Tour.) Saini and Wynveen have similar plights. And you don't just jump in an S2000 and win Nationals.

Has anyone ever hoped for some 'nobody' to come out of the woodwork and clean house in some big name class.
I've always thought it would be neat to see someone roll up to nationals completely off teh radar with a car one doesn't normally see and clean house.
Well back to the real world.
Are we going to have NASIOC predictions for this as we do for F1 races??
It could be fun. It also could be painful.
I think Josh wins it because noone else thinks he will. :D

Wynveen has been autocrossing every weekend this year and has been to 3 Tours Atlanta, Toledo and Peru as well as a couple of CENDIV's on top of 8 or so local events. He's had the seat time even if he says he doesn't. Jason not so much as I think he's been concentrating on Road Racing a Spec Miata, but Steve definitely has the seat time and lots of development time on both Hoosier and Kumhos and a couple of test n tunes.

that's kind of funny. there are some very fast cars out there that you don't know about.
money gets you to alot of big races.
money does not make you a better driver.
it's totally feasable that somebody not normally mentioned here could show up and clean house.

What's funny is that you guys think that the panelists actually "wrote" the article.
I will tell you straight up that a lot of the names I threw out on the table aren't even mentioned in the article. I know this, and I haven't even seen the issue yet. But, it's been the case for the last couple of years that I've been on the picks panel, so I wouldn't expect this year to be any different.
The way it works is this : mid-June, the SportsCar editor Richard James sends us all an email asking if we want to do it again. People reply and we make an impromptu mailing list.
Then we submit our picks to Richard and each other. Depending on who it is, it could just be a list of names, or it could be an article unto itself. My picks, for instance, are a list of who I think is likely to win, and a little blurb on why I think they will win, then usually a couple of other names who will be major challengers.
An example of my submission from this year :
ESP : Tommy Pulliam
Nationals will be the first meeting of the east and west coast STEvo drivers, but my pick is Tommy simply because it seems that Joel Fehrmans car (Stompy) is holding together better than any of the Evolutions. The car that John Tak is driving (owned by Andrew Lieber) broke at Oscoda, and while its definitely a fast car, it wont win sitting on the trailer. Navid Kahangis car is still in one piece, but whos to say what will happen in the next two months? Fast pony cars will include Conor Botkin (Camaro) and Marcus Merideth (Mustang).
STX : Courtney Cormier
Courtney, driving the familiar aqua Mini Cooper S, should be able to hang on to the win this year. Tom Hoppe may or may not have an STX car to drive, after breaking his former car (now owned by Mike Dr. Biggly Winn) for the second time this year at the Oscoda Pro. If Mike King gets a ride (possibly in the Croy car), he, too will be a factor. Josh Sortor will bring the West Coasts best game to the concrete.
Now, once the names are "out there," then we try to come to some consensus for "the" pick. If there isn't a clear majority for a person, we tend to argue for our pick in various ways. Once all of the picks have a majority, that's "the" SportsCar pick. Any other names mentioned are at the discretion of the writer of the article, who this year was Paul Brown.
Oh, and this all has to be done by the first week in July in order to make the deadline. Fun, eh?
So there you have it. Think you should have been mentioned? Blame Paul. :D

Thanks Karen, it's cool to get some inside info on how the article takes shape and how it's written.
To be honest I didn't know there WERE panelists or how the choices were made at all. Because I only see one side of the country I don't think I'd ever be qualified to make picks at all and other than a little NASIOC trash talking will tend to keep out of it.
Can you tell us who submitted picks to the panel this year other than you or is it super secret?

In the past, the panelists are listed at the beginning of the article; I haven't gotten mine yet, so I can't say if it's true this year or not.
IIRC, this year, the list included : me, Paul Brown, Jeff Cashmore, Matt Murray, Ken Motonishi, Ron Bauer, Erik Strelnieks, Andy Hollis and Richard James.
