carbon fiber hoods

I just hit a deer yesterday, oddly, but thankfully only my hood got dented... i think i need a new hood.. and was wondering how those carbon fiber hoods are in terms of safety and longetivity... can anyone please comment?

they fit good if you get a nice one (VIS or SEIBON) they are much stronger and durable than an OEM hood. as far as safty..... im not sure what you mean. my friend rearended a car bad and the hood broke the latch and just poped up, no damage to it, so i guess it took out the crush zone of the stock hood

What are the real advantages to haveing a carbon fiber hood?

Its just for bling factor. I have a VIS on mine because some bimbos backed into my car parking.

normally weight savings but IIRC the aluminum wrx hood is just as light if not lighter than most CF hoods

If you have a 2002-03 model and an Sti hood scoop, DO NOT buy a Seibon carbon fiber hood unless you want to stick your scoop in the attic like me. :(

Seibon and 2003 sti hood scoop not compatible? Not what I wanted to hear!

i had a SEIBON very good hood

SEIBON and VIS are both excellent. You really get what you pay for with CF hoods. I would not recommend anything else. I owned both when I had my Celica. You need to consider the fact you are buying a whole body panel, so quality is of the utmost importance. You need it to look good, fit well, last long and be safe! You NEED hoodpins. This is not an option. I've heard/seen too many hoods fly up due to the lack of hoodpins.
Hoodpins cost $25. If your hood fails it will cost thousands.
Why you need hoodpins...
Your current hood has two latches, let's call them the regular latch and the safety latch. When you pop your hood from inside your car, you release the regular latch. Then you have to go reach under your hood to undo the safety latch so you can actually open the hood.
Why does you have a safety latch?
It has a safety latch just in case it flies up while you are driving. So, you have two metal safeties in place before your hood will fly up on you while driving.
VIS cf hoods do not have a safety latch, so when you pop your hood, it is just plain open. SEIBON does have this latch but instead of being made out of metal like your current one, it is made out of fiberglass. That fiberglass will not hold if your hood latch fails while driving. All latches on CF hoods are metal embedded in fiberglass which is prone to breaking. So, use hoodpins! Any stress on the hood will go to your hoodpins instead of your latch, and if your latch happens to fail, your hoodpins will keep you hood down.

has anyone ever heard of rain damage caused by rain comming in through vents in a CF hood like the reverse cowl style on some Seibon hoods?
| nexeradg | 05-07-2005 02:35 AM |
About the hoodpins...I have had my VIS on my car for about 6 months now. I have never had the inclination that my hood would "fly open" even in excessive speeds (no need to state how fast). I am not quite sure what you mean that there is no "safety" latch on the VIS hoods. You retain the same latch. I took the latch off the original hood and screwed it on the CF. No other modification. I still have to reach under to pop the hood. But anyways, whatever floats your boat. I prefer no pins.
As far as the hood is concerned. I love it! I really don't care what color car you have, Carbon Fiber looks good with everything! As far as weight savings , I do bellieve the VIS is lighter, but not by much(vs. WRX hood). As far as structual integrity is involved, I would assume the stock hood would be able to absorb more of an impact. The VIS hood is only a thin sheet of Carbon over FIBERGLASS! It would probably shatter into a thousand pieces in the occurance of a head on collision.
It would probably shatter into a thousand pieces in the occurance of a head on collision.
i would say above if it was completely made with carbon ! look at F1 racing ,IMO i would say c/f and grp mix is better than just carbon for strength but pure carbon for lightness ,
has anyone got any picture's of a car with c/f hood that's been in a crash ???

i've been searching, but i can't find the thread that had the picture of the f***ed up wrx that had it's cf hood fly up on the highway. it destroyed the windshield and roof. i personally trust hood pins more than i trust a stock latch screwed in fiberglass/cf. one of the local speed shops in chicago(top speed) won't sell you a cf hood without hood pins due to their experiences with cf hoods flying up on highways. it cuts down on their liability.
i've been in a head on collision with my cf hood. the cf part wasn't damaged at all. the fiberglass structure was cracked, etc... the hood flew up on impact, the accident instantly separated the latch from the hood, however, it remained attached to the hinges. sorry, i dont' have pictures. the hood looked fine though, the latch just broke and the fiberglass skeleton was cracked.
please refrain from making "educated" guesses. say something if you know it to be true.
or the other ones that sell for like 250 on ebay..
I got one about 2 years ago, it fits perfectly with no big gaps around the edges and everything aligned just like factory. It never bubbled or warped in the sunlight. It still looks new other than scratches in the clearcoat from rocks and from pulling the hoodpins. "You get what you pay for" is a popular phrase around here, but it's usually not very true.
Definately use hood pins. They're only $6 at AutoZone, and their beefier and nicer looking than the $25 ones you order from most online shops. Hell I buy a new pair everytime I do a car show just so I can have them shiny and new cuz they're so cheap.
And carbon fiber hoods are definately NOT stronger than the stock parts, no matter what brand you buy. Unless you're spending the cash on F1-quality stuff, but you'd be looking at $3000 or more for a hood.

You must have hit something lower than your hood for it to fly up and not get damaged , the fiberglass skeleton are you on about the underneath "second skin" which the top c/f hood bond's to ?
