cheap interior? Why? part 1

cheap interior? Why?

Why do people say that the WRX has a cheap interior? It doesn't look as bad as most (if not all) domestic stuff in the price range, and better than Hyundai/Kia (the tiburon is close IMO though). What is it exactly that makes it "cheap"? I find the fit and finish very good, no rattles, no squeaks, and minimal interior noise. The engine does sound like a truck engine at times (boxer 4 is always gonna sound weird/cool I guess :) ), and there is tranny noise on decel (in gear).

Just a question, not a flame, looking for some valid answers here. I realize there is almost no leather in the interior... but I also didn't pay THAT much for this car.

I do feel that the celica interior is better, but don't know if I would go so far as to say "it's not cheap". I think the interior is better than some camry's from the early/mid nineties, and possibly better than 2g DSM's (Talons/Eclipses). Those are mostly the only cars I have spent some major time in.

OTH, it doesn't have the BMW interior feel, of even BMW's from the late eighties/early nineties... but then again, it's not a BMW. The WRX interior is only a little worse than the IS300 interior (w/o leather), which is a far cry from the utilitarian/solid euro feel.

it could use a little more sound dampening... I don't get much road noise... but the wind noise is somewhat bad. That and the speakers rattle at basically any volume over 8 or so. I like the interior as a whole.. with the exception of the chinzy visors, it's comfortable and not unpleasant to the eyes. I would like to know how well the seats and floor mats are going to hold up though.
LttLDGN 11-05-2001 02:42 PM

bah.. people will always complain about bad things.. but hardly take the time to praise the little good things....

i love my WRX interior... everything fits nicely, and i got leather for my car too... looks great..

the wrx also has alot more storage space in the interior than most car's i've seen.... i buy a 48 CD book into the glove  along with my manual, tire pressure guage... flashlight, note pad.. etc...

center console holds a V1 radar detector, cell phone charger, parking passes, and other nic-knacks...

get the extended armrest.. and jeez... maybe i could move into my wrx.. :D

as for the "solid feel" of BMW's... when i get new speakers for my car... i will be dynamating them.... that makes the solid as heck...

so for about 1k (incl leather), i will have a car with solid doors, and leather, and a decent useable interior.....

only gripe i have now is the costs of a sunroof
Rebellion 11-05-2001 02:50 PM

exactly... I'm debating getting the leather seats (i want something IS300 like w/ the center faux suede) ... it's still too early for that though... only had the car 5 days. :)

if you ask most of the owners of the WRX they would say that the interior is fine and not cheap.

personally i think that is true, the interior is a upgrade from the previous model. everything fits nicely and evenly balanced. u dont hear alot of exterior noise so that is a good thing.

basically when u hear ppl say that the interior of the WRX is tacky or cheap its b/c they either have a RSX type S or Celica GTS or any other car that cant meet the performance of the WRX, they have nothing else to compete with against the WRX sooooo they have to go to the interior. b/c performance wise they all get spanked by the WRX. so this is their way of gaining some face back i guess

i suppose that's why we call domestic's interior cheap eh? :p

for the most part i find the interior to be ok. my mom's '92 camry was better in terms of things not rattling and squeaking. its nothing too bad, other than a sqeak somewhere right along the windshield in the headliner and the speaker.

oh yeah, that cheezy sunvisor too :o

its fine, and its useful. if you expect more... i guess you gotta pay more

No leather for me...

...but I got Wet Okole Neoprene Seat Covers. I got them in black and "wine" (red) with the WRX logo in white. The covers make the interior look even better! Very very nice.

I don't find the interior cheap at all. In fact, I find it as good as or better than the Honda Accord & Civic, Acura Integra, Toyota Camry, Ford Taurus, Mitsubishi Gallants & Mirages, and other "similarly priced" cars.

Maybe it's just me, but I like the interior quite a bit!

Go sit in a current Audi for approximately 3.2 seconds and you will understand why a WRX interior seems cheap. When you can put ugly gouges in the plastic with a fingernail and a tiny pressure (try it), the parts are low quality. Give some time for the interior squeaks to start (I'm sure many GC8 owners can comment on that great rattle from the overhead light). Is the interior cheaply made? Absolutely! Would it stop me from buying another Subaru? Hell no!

I didn't buy it for the quality of the plastic on the inside, I am going to replace that felt-like substance they claim is carpet, and I am going to get a leather interior package. It won't be an Audi, but I will love it far more.

I think the interior is slightly cheap. I already scratched the plastic on my lower dash. It bugs the crap out of me that i cant fix it. How would you guys fix that?

Also, I dont like the interior lights, I would rather thye be blue. I have an 02. Is there anyways i can change the lights on my speedomter and tach????
Boosted WRX 11-06-2001 01:42 AM

My interior is pretty good, nothing compared to my buddy's S4 or Passat 1.8T, but than again my payments are nothing compared to the S4 and can perform just as well. The interior is plenty sufficient for a car under 25k. If you got leather, and all the interior ammenities it wouldn't be under 25k. Either way it is a trade-off. Overall, I am happy with my interior. And most domestic car's interior is junk. I worked at a pontiac dealership and the firebird's interior is very cheesy and alot of cheap plastic for a $33k car. I am gonna get really flamed for this, but the Corvette has a very cheap interior also. Same radio and controls as the Venture minivan, gauge layout is obviously different though. It is a trade-off because you are geting soo much performance for the price though. Can't have it all. -KEVIN-

can anyone help me out with my reply (go up two replies)

Thx

it has a "cheap" interior, although i think cheap is the wrong word. doesn't feel sturdy enough and the cup holder is flimsy at best. it is a typical Japanese interior feel, and man I wish the interior lights were updated, that would kick ass if they were white and red or blue and red...
Kostamojen 11-06-2001 04:10 AM

There are 4 camps of WRX owners when it comes to interior opinions:

1, the previous Subaru Owners (Who have had Subarus, and consider this interior an improvment over the previous interior)

2, the former BMW/Audi/VW/Mercades/etc. European Luxury owners (Consider this a big down-step in interiors, but they didnt buy the car for that reason :p )

3, the former "Big 3" car owners camp (Interior is a big improvement, especially coming from mustangs/etc., but not soft enough like a caddy :p )

4, the former Japense/Asian car owners camp (Most, exept the Acura/Lexus/Infiniti owners, consider this a slight improvement, but much racier than their former cars, unless if it was a Type-R)

So, it really depends on your relativity... Did you come from a more luxurious, or less luxurious previous car?
Vineet Singh 11-06-2001 04:53 AM

Some very good points and insights... Thanks!

I didn't say it was cheap, I like it just the way it is... I got what I paid for and wanted. It's just that people say it is, and I couldn't figure out why. I think the "their cars got no huevo's, so they gotta dis our interiors" scenario is the funniest, and probably true to some extent :)

Yes, I think it's a normal "Japanese" car interior, none of which ever feel/look like a european one. But that's ok, I can't afford a NEW european one right now, and this is just fine :)

Back to whooping some v8, and rycer a$$ :)
grandmasterchan 11-06-2001 09:29 AM

Uhhhh...#2 here!

It's so true. The interior does feel cheap, but then again that's not what I bought the car for. However the seats are really nice for factory. Can't go to wrong than that black and blue combo.
THEMUSH 11-06-2001 10:07 AM

to the guy with the WET OAKLE seat covers. Do you loose you side airbags because of the covers?

The Wet Okole WRX front seat covers have a hole in the side for the side airbags. No problem!

Btw, did I mention the covers fit like a glove? :D Truly awesome.

I've been meaning to take some photos to post, but haven't gotten around to it yet. :-/ However, lexwrx posted some pics of his Wet Okoles here:

how much did your wet okole seat covers cost? and do they have them for the rear? cuz my dad had them for his porsche carrera and they felt pretty nice, but then again if no back seats i will be going leather
Skyline 11-06-2001 10:43 AM

Hmmm.. I understand that a lot of people like/love leather, but I can't stand leather seats. That's just me. ;)

I paid $295 for front seat covers, WRX logo, neoprene shampoo, UV protectant spray, and shipping. For the 2002 WRX, they actually modeled the Wagon (from a walk-in customer), not the sedan. So, I was able to get the fronts since they are the same. If someone with a WRX sedan wants to volunteer to get his/her rears modeled, I'd love it. However, I'm fine for now. I rarely take a rear passenger anyway. :p

I don't know about the 2000 2.5RS. Just give them a (toll free) call and find out. Their phone number is listed at www.wetokole.com.

Those seat covers look great! are they planning on making a matching set for the rear so it looks uniform?

When I ordered them in early October, the sedan rears were not available. It was simply a matter of them not having measured the rear seats of the WRX sedan.

However, I do not know if they have since acquired the pattern for the sedan rear. Why not give them a call at 1-888-24-OKOLE, ask them, and report back to us? :)

Otherwise, if some kind soul with a WRX sedan would like to swing by their store in California...we could all benefit! Plus, I'm sure they'd give a discount to anyone who provides seats for their measurements.

Yeah, I really want the rear covers too. :)

2.5RS <> WRX Same Seats?

From memory the front seats on the '02 2.5RS and the WRX are the same. Are they (before I order a set of the wetokole seat covers)?
Skyline 01-03-2002 02:18 PM

I believe the shapes of the seats are the same. I think the only differences are the WRX seats have side air bags and the cloth is different.

When you order the covers, they will also ask you questions about where the seat controls are located, how the head rest is attached, and whether you have side impact air bags. If you tell them you do not have the air bags like the WRX, they should be able to make the covers without the hole in the side.

I've had a ton of comments about how nice the interior of the WRX is. Does it look cheap? Hell no.

Is it built cheap. HELL YES!!

I have a new rattle or squeak every week. Now I think my subwoofer is working itself lose from under the passenger seat!
Skyline 01-03-2002 04:04 PM

I heard that the subwoofer bracket was changed a little while ago. Maybe you can ask your dealer about that?

I have a set of the Wet Okole in navy blue with the WRX logo in the brighter blue ,the logo is truly sublime. The whole set matches my rear seats and paint color so well people have thought they were OEM. Well worth the 270 bucks shipped, it's pricy , but if you don't go leather wet okole is the way to go!
They weren't to difficult to put on, but they are nice and snug so its important to allign the seams properly and to get the bottom of the upper seat velcroed, if you tilt the seat back all the way you can get to it easier. I did one with the seat up and was cursing, on the other the seat went down and so did my blood pressure
stiguy555 01-03-2002 08:39 PM

When you have such awesome performance for $24K, there is going to be some shortcomings in other areas. At least the interior isnt as bad as Camaro's/Firebird's!
