Congrats to Paul Tracy

He has won the CART championship at last. He finished way down the field at another wreck-fest at Surfer's Paradise, but his rival Junqueira got a DNF.

And my boy Ryan Hunter-Reay for winning.
Go ASTJ. Trust me, this was huge for the team.

I think Paul Tracy is good for laughs, but he really is a punk. He thinks because he has been in the series so long that he automatically deserves respect. He finally wins the championship but whos left there for competition? Now if he would have won it when CART had all the big names and competiton in the mid to late '90s like Deferran, Zanardi, Andretti, Vasser, Moore, etc., then it would mean something. I gave up on Paul Tracy when he started quoting Snoop Dog in trackside interviews

Whether u like him or not he is a champion.
There is still plenty of competition in champ car. Just because there aren't as many notabale names in the series doesnt take away from his victories.
Surfers was quite a fun race to watch with lots of interesting things happening.
Congrats to PT.. this was 13 years in the making!
also congrats to the ASTJ guys.. this 1,3 finish should do well for their sponsorship hunt for next season

I hope he enjoys this victory, he will never win the championship again. He quite simply is not that good. He just happened to be left with a bunch of rookies in the series who needed to learn the tracks. He will be lucky to finish in the top 5 next year.
Enjoy it PT. You beat the a feild of mostly rookies, ooo aaa.

Not so much defending Tracy as wanting to make the point that just because drivers are rookies does not mean they are not skilled, fast and competative. Lets not put down the entire field in order to put down Tracy.

No kidding, there are some good drivers in the series now.
Bourdais, Fernandez, Jourdain, Junquiera(!), Salo(!!), Servia and Vasser, all of them are good, and I'm sure would be good in other series as well, even if one or two are a little old.

I think that CART has a wealth of talented drivers right now. I agree with TyrannoSullyRex about the skill in the series. There ara lot of bone head moves that go on in CART though. Tracy tried to throw away the championship a few times in Surfers Paradise.

FWIW there are a little over a handful of rookies in the series right now.. hardly FULL of.. . Some pretty talented rookies too.. ie bourdais/salo/manning
Tracy will still be in the championship hunt next year.. but then all the naysayers will find something else to knock him

I never said he wasn't a good or talented driver but I think he his just a little jackass. If I had to spend an hour with him I would probably end up kicking him in the sack. He seems to be really stuck on him self and arrogant. I think you can be a good driver, have good time and not be a prick. Look at Vasser, daMata, JPM or even Jeff Gordon. Tracy is just another Eddie Irvine to me.

I saw that interview, I thought it was incredibly funny.
Shame about Fontana. I think pittspilot has it right, I see that as a cancellation rather than a postponement.
What is going on for CART next year? I lose track with prospective buyers coming and going, TV ratings in the toilet etc. Is there going to be a competitive series in '04?

Oh hes a model spokes person for CART: My money comes in heaps and the kids love me in the streets
As for his talent there is a reason he has been in CART for 10 years and never had a test with an F1 team. Has he ever made a pass for the lead where he didnt punt someone off the track?

At least he hasn't lowered himself to the crapwagon series, er, IRL.

Why do you call the IRL " crapwagon series"
At least he hasn't lowered himself to the crapwagon series, er, IRL
Whats wrong with the IRL? It has some the most exciting racing going! Those IRL drivers have some of the biggest B*LLs of any race car driver. I think it takes at lot of skill and nerve for those drivers to run at those speeds, inches apart , lap after lap. The downside is when they do touch, the crash is usually a big one.
I am a fan of both series. Iwas bummed the first few years of the split and down on Tony and the IRL, but I dont think you can knock the racing, or MOST of the drivers in the IRL.
Either way I hope Dixon gets into F1 soon.

If IRL would turn right every once in a while I would respect it a lot more. One of the most frustrating thing is that it seems that most if not all of the drivers want to go road racing but all the money is in the ovals becuase the fans and the sponsors can see "all the action". I dont think that danger equates skill and as the recent death at IMS should us it very dangerous. I wish that the series would bring the speed down and make the racing less of a crap shoot.

grumbly. Actually PT had a test with Benneton in the 90s when
Schumacher was with them.
Well i still think PT deserves lots of respect even though his mouth may run wild once in a while. He has stuck with CART for many troubled years when he could have easily with the Nascar or IRL with a certain japanese manufacturer paying him big $$$.
Cart is already on its upwards swing.. new owners with vision, new talented drivers, exciting new venues... its all coming together. now we just need some more sponsors..
there will most definately be a competitive season in 04. The doom and gloom surrounding the series is slowly fading away.

Well with Paul Gentilozzi behind the ownership now, I would expect a turn-around. I think Paul is one of the neatest guys in motorsports. I love listening or reading interviews with him. He had a slip of the tongue on a CART interview on Speed once. It was pretty funny what he said. I don't think Speed quite knew what he meant by it. I wish I could remember his wording. It involved the word "head" though.
I respect Paul for sticking it back to GM in Trans Am a few years ago. They approached him about info on his Vette when he was running it. They didn't want to ink any kind of deal beforehand. He didn't really give them much and went to the Jaguars. He then proceeded to kick their butts quite often. Now this year his other driver from Rocketsports is champ, Scott Pruett. :disco:
And he is from MI too. Lansing to be exact.

I don't know about CART next year. The shareholders still have to vote on the tender offer by OWRS. (Gentilozzi's group) If you look to the 3rd Q this year the financial results are just awful. I don't know if CART can make it through December. And I am not sure about the teams. I hear that there are enough, but I have my doubts. Sponsors are just not coming on board.

I figured someone would rise to that comment. I also half guessed he probably did have a test I just couldnt find any info on it. Eh.. oh well. Tracy has never impressed me with his driving and his high punt to pass ratio. Clean driving is not exactly what hes known for.
This all might be moot anyway as we might be down to only one open wheel racing series next year anyway. The storm clouds over CART look thicker already and Tony George is doing his rain dance.
