are you going to be racing in a specific circuit? auto-x? track? rally? drag? just a suggestion you may want to consider something legal to your forte.... if its for show then go right ahead, cause i dont think the cusco roll cage is legal for any events here stateside, but it looks 'cool' though =-)
engineerx 10-03-2004 09:42 PM

here are pics of my cage. 7-point Cusco
I believe it's not approved for competition but it should be better than not having one at all if you go to track day events
I'll leave the pics on the server for a week or so, then I have to remove to make space (crappy 10-MB alotment from Adelphia account)

roll cage prevention
does roll cage prevent injuries? how??
My White Asspen 10-03-2004 10:29 PM

how much is that roll cage and where did u get it???
Fusionpnoy 10-03-2004 11:03 PM

That roll cage runs for about 700 or so.
Bumble Bee 03 10-03-2004 11:10 PM

im gonna get one also ..... hot!
engineerx 10-03-2004 11:15 PM

BEILEI : No roll cage is guaranteed to prevent injuries! if you are at a track event you need to wear a helmet, restrainers (neck & arms), harness, etc .... Roll cages DO help substantially. In the event of a roll they should help the roof from collapsing and add some body rigidity and competition-approved cages also help in side impacts. The Cusco cage - although not for competition use - should help in the event of a "mild roll" http://www.cusco.co.jp/english/e_rollbar.html

MY WHITE ASSPEN : I paid about $900 or so - I forgot but I searched and searched for the best DELIVERED PRICE and found it @ www.mzmperformance.com talk to Mutasim he's a cool dude and will hook you up. He told me to tell the NASIOC people he will try to give best price possible. Just tell him "Roland" told you where to get it. - hehehe! just happy with their customer service so from my experience I say they're good vendors. They deal directly wiht the main distributors of Cusco in Chicago. - Cusco sets pricing very strictly through their authorized dealers - Better to get it from authorized dealers in case of any issues!

The only problem with these cages is that the box is huge and cumbersome to handle so UPS shipping may put a scratch or 2 but nothing major - anyway my car is not a show car - I go to the track quite alot! and Cusco is thoughtful enough to include a little can of touch up paint !

The 7-point runs about $900 (3 crosmembers on roof) - they charge about $75 - $100 for shipping
the 6-point is $700 (only 2 crossmembers on roof)

engineerx How does the cage affect the seats from reclining? Do you still have full movement?

Thanks!

Nice looking cage, who has the best deal on one?
sunnynw 10-04-2004 11:42 AM

What prompted you to install a cage in your car?
.RYAN 10-04-2004 04:01 PM

wheres the 7th point?
.RYAN 10-04-2004 04:02 PM

Can you still use the back seat? Do you have to cut anything for the back seat. I know you cant open the glove box anymore.
dwx 10-04-2004 04:08 PM

Put some padding on there.
vtecTHIS 10-04-2004 04:58 PM

can you take a pic of were it meets the floor by the front seats? just want to see how close it gets to your legs. also could you take a pic of the rear seat installed? thanks, looks good. hope you never get a chance to test it's durabilty.
awilson529 10-04-2004 06:20 PM

Thats hot!!!

Did you install it yourself? Easy? Hard? Please rank 1-10, 1 being easiets.

Thanks

I took my car to the Carbon Fiber shop today - they're gonna use it to make molds for hood & trunk & I get FREE CF parts :)

I found best deal @ www.mzmperformance.com contact Mutasim - authorized Cusco dealer.

- Seats recline normally - no change
- Glove box opens normally - you just got to make sure when you drill hole on floor to bolt bar down your glove box is not blocked! - opens fine !
- Rear seats: no need to cut - you need to remove the plastic caps for the rear shoulder belts which is not structural or in anyway hampers their use. The cushions you just push them out a little
-Installation: for me = 5 You have to locate the right palce where to drill so that you don't block the glove box, for my STi the front dead pedal support was on the way - I had to use a dremel to cut a portion of the dead pedal support which is under the carpet because it got on the way of the fron driver bar. Drilling through the sheetmetal is easy with a good drill - you just have to make sure you locate the holes. Anyone hndy with tools should have no problem (make sure you measure all location and assemble it before you drill. I started from the rear since thats the location where you have the less compliance/adjustment

What prompted me?
I go to track events here in So Calif, and I like using a 6-point harness, the cage should help in rigidity for the car and safety in case of a roll over + it looks great in my opinion - without loosing space usability !

The front bars just make it a little different getting in & out of the car - I'd say if you're 5'8" or shorter it's not bad at all - if you're taller then it may be more difficult on driver side. My experience so far :
No complaints !
Visibility: is not decreased, the front bars are right in the field of view where the A-pillars are so no loss
Space: almos no change - all passenger room unchanged, rear passengers can get in & out w/ no problem

Cusco did a great job designing the layout of this cage so as to not make it intrusive - I love it - I get alot of compliments on it ! looks great too !!

My car will be at shop for about 1 week and a half :( - I'm driving a Sentra rental - I'mma redline that sucker !

I'll look for more pics when I get home...

at least is not as intrusive as this one ;)

This is how Cusco categorizes their cages
the 7 pt on this pictures is diagonal - just a variation - same as going horizontally across at the rear (the pink member)

If you want one of these, you should price out what a custom one by a shop that specializes in doing them first, IMHO... it might not be that much more.

How does this cage compare to the STi cage?
engineerx 10-04-2004 09:07 PM

I think the Sti cage is made by Cusco - exact same design just Pink color errr Cherry Blossom Red color I mean !

here are pics requested of front bars/floorboard location and rear bars location !
I took these at the Hot Import Riceroni Nights in Los Angeles

I got my cage in the car finaly . its great i love it . from what i under stand the cusco cage that we have installed is a chasse strangthaning cage and is not really made to prevent the injury in case of a roll over or crash . but cuscos " SAFTY 21" parts are used in JGTC races amoung others and is race certified

Read this before you buy....might save your life one day.

The Cusco Roll Cage shouldnt be used when Racing...In fact its not approved here in the States. Waste of money, unless you alsho. Same goes for those Harness Bars, if you roll with a harness and no cage you will die more than likely.
XtianLA 10-05-2004 12:57 AM

Instead of buying a whole new cage would it be possible to have a cusco one modified by a shop that custom builds cages to be legal for racing? I have a six-point cusco and really hate to just tear it out and have to sell it because it's not legal...
engineerx 10-05-2004 02:16 AM

It's just not approved for sanctioned racing / solo / autocross / etc.
You can still use it for regular street driving.
You'd have to see what the requirements for cages are from the different sanctioning bodies SCCA etc .... might not be possible or worth it to modify - just take it out & sell it and have an approved one installed instead!

I think that if you want to keep the seating space in your car and you're not going to be racing in sanctioned events - the Cusco cage provides more safety than no cage at all. i know that it's bolt-on nature is not optimal but welded in cages require far more expense and tearing your interior more. Also in a major roll where your car really gets airborne .... you would pretty much have to have "race-built" where it's lighter and more rigid - th bolt-on cages may in vact punch through floors !
I don't wanna tear down my interior and I do track events but not races so the Cusco wil do for now
Bulletproof 10-05-2004 01:32 PM

FYI, Bulletproof Automotive offers a price match on all Cusco parts and we're a NASIOC Sponsor. We'd be glad to help.

We have sold a couple of these to our customers and they are very happy with them. They serve a purpose for some people. For the die hard SCCA guys this will not work. But to each their own. This piece is definitely a show stop very beautiful and well built. They are kinda hard to get your hands on but we probably get about 1 or 2 a month shipped over from japan. Here are some more pics.

This is the 7th point
