GOTO:Racing, In-car Video of #93 COBB Legacy GT (wreck)

Ok, so here is a short clip of the incident that costs us 4+ hours of work and cost a loyal fan parts of his car :).
Please exuse the obscenities, drivers tend to get a little frustrated when GS boneheads wreck their car.

Soon to be released... GOTO vs. ICY battle. Should have it up tomorrow.

HOLY ****!!!
wow i heard about the wreck but damn!!! I think that stang (i think it was a stang) was a little optimistic to try the middle of both of you. I'm sorry you all didnt make it and i would have been that mad as well :(
how is the car and drive doing now though?

That sucks. Glad you guys recovered and still made a good showing in the race!

looked to me like the legacy driver moved right just before impact. the contact was behind the drivers door of the mustang. maybe the driver of the mustang thought the pass was complete and moved over too early, but more likely is he didn't realize the legacy driver was moving over to the right and took away the room he thought he had. imo, legacy driver at fault. he should have seen the faster car coming and left him room to complete the pass. there was no need to hold up the mustang and no advantage to moving over to the right early. not trying to be a dick, just offering a non-suby biased opinion.
ps. glad to see everyone made it out ok and you got the car back together.

The move over was slight at best but you could tell by the angle of the Mustang that the driver cut over too early (the BMW may have been moving over on him). It was an agressive move that ended badly. That's racing I guess!
Nice recovery after the spin!
Thanks,
Phil

It seems that he was trying to make room for the other GS car on his left. Being in a GS sandwich there was really no where for anyone to go as there was another ST car making it four wide entering the keyhole turn. Some one needed to brake and yet nobody volunteered.

the black car was the 4th car in the mix? i didn't think he was far enough up to make a difference and just got collected in the aftermath. we need footage from a 5th car following this whole thing to really determine who was at fault. for the time being, i'll hold that the legacy driver was still at fault and reserve the right to be wrong pending additional information. if the 4th car was coming up on his left driver of the legacy had basically shut the door on him unless the driver of that car wanted to go two off in the grass to force the issue. what is the saying about slower cars driving the line and being consistent so that the faster cars can predict what they are going to do? i think the whole thing could have been avoided if the legacy had stayed drivers left on the racing surface.

That is what it looks like, and I might agree with your analysis if it had not been for the fact that the legacy driver moved back right because the PlayBoy 350Z was making it a 4 wide situation to the left. I know because I was the legacy driver :). The problem was that that I saw BOTH GS cars, but neither of them saw each other(something they both later admitted. priceless quote: "what 350?") and they both thought that I had plenty of room to leave them.
I was drifting left to let the Mustang through, but he kept insisting I move closer and closer to the white line because he didn't see the 350 that was even with him. Likewise the 350 was making a pop on my left having no clue there was a guy doing the same on my(and his!) right. Both were closing too fast to check up, both were commited to having to driving though, both thought I would yeild to the other.
About the time I straightened the car, realized we were all screwed. I only had 1.5 car widths to give, and these guys were asking for 2 and some change. Knowing that the stang had tons of rooms between him and the Z4, I choose to cheat his way, because had I not, I would have been hit by the 350 anyway, who was already running a wheel on the white line. Well it was obvious the stang did want to give back anything I had given him, and his hit was smart enough to spin me into the 350as it passed(the reason the car spins back to the right).
The aftermath was that the Mustang needed a little bit of work, we needed the thrash described in our press, and the 350 went home. I feel that this kind of stuff is easily avoided by paying attention to your surroundings. One of the reasons I was so mad was that it wasn't just a fluke. I saw it coming a mile away, and was a little disapointed that the other guys didn't. Too bad we forgot to put the rear mount camera in. That is probably the best angle.

I'll be the first to admit that I am simply an amateur loving the sport of racing. I know little as to the code of ethics when driving two different class cars in the same race and will not pretend to know more about it then someone who does this every chance he or she gets. Solo-x, you may very well be dead right on this....Im just here as an observer enjoying the reality of what racing can do to even the best drivers. It brings humanity into the mix of raw speed and heated competition. I'm just glad to see everyone came out of the accident safe and in good order.
The GOTO Racing team did a great job of getting their car back out for the next session which was held only a few hours later. You guys certainly had a tough weekend but it was clear that through those tough trials you made the most of it. Kudos to the team and your hard work. It was exciting to watch a team work so dilligently to get a banged up car back out there to compete.

sounds like an unfortunate situation all around. my monday arm-chair quarterbacking thinks it might have been better to force the 350 to put two off, but that's neither here nor there.
btw, mucho respect and tons of kudo's for your response to my post. you could have understandably taken offense to what i said. instead you calmly provided the rest of the story. good stuff. let me correct myself and change my stance to the 350 being the largest percentage at fault, the mustang a much smaller amount and you as merely the wrong place at the wrong time hoping to make the best of it.

An unfortunate and unpleasant experience. I'm glad you (and the others involved) are ok. Never have been on a track, I find threads like this most interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I was actually HOPING for the 350 to go two off. It was my first and best plan. The dumb part was that he was doing the "pressure me to move over" thing were he lines his headlight up with your taillight. About the time I made my corrective action, he already was beyond the point of being able to make that corrective action into the grass (his closure speed was close to 30mph). I straighten the car in hopes he would hit me clean in the bumper, and not spin me into the concrete. I was actually suprised the Mustang hit me first, I was sure the 350 was going to be the one to take me out. :).
and thanks for your kudos. I don't like to flame people. I like to tell stories. Just so everyone knows though, Grand Am officals agreed with me. From the testimony of their cameras, my camera, and corner crews, I was taking a corrective action to avoid being hit by the 350. Though no penalties were issued, the GS drivers were reprimanded for creating an unnecesary and unsafe passing situation that no one was going to come out of without contact. Their view was that anyone can make a mistake, but there was no excuse for not knowing how many cars are around you.

Great job, GOTO! Thanks for the description and awesome job on recovering so cleanly in the middle of that chaos. Looking forward to your next video to be free of bad situations :(
PS: Just watched it again. GEEZE! They really didn't give you a chance in hell! I wonder, if you had held your ground on the left if the Z wouldn't have just smacked into the Mustang prior to running into you.

Threads and videos like these that pop up from time to time, while interesting for me to check out and watch, reaffirm every time that I have zero interest in ever racing wheel-to-wheel with anyone.
I don't have the patience and tolerance for crap like that. I'll compete against myself, thanks ;)
Sorry to see it, GOTO folks.
