da Matta in F-1 will be.... part 1

Fred Zaplitny 11-20-2002 06:09 PM

da Matta in F-1 will be....
Another CART to F-1 flop ala Micheal Andretti / Alex Zanardi

OR

Another JPM, duking it out for second place in the points.

I think he will get his bum handed to him on a ferrari platter...But who knows. I haven't seen him behind the wheel of a Formula1 car yet :p
gtguy 11-20-2002 07:19 PM

Who knows? Clearly, he has talent, but so did Zanardi and so did Michael. I'm predicting a steep learning curve that will eventually tail off into a mid-pack performance.

Of course, so much of it depends upon what kind of car he gets.

I think he is very committed to do what it takes. Andretti wasn't. He'll do good, but it remains to be seen what his car/team will be able to provide him.
Bonzo 11-20-2002 10:23 PM

hey I posted this a while ago. damn n00bs do a search;) j/k

I believe he has the talent, perseverence(sp) and personality. The only thing that will hamper his success is the team he will be driving for.

I remember watching Micheal and I think he got the short end the stick/car that season. Remember who his teamate was? Remember who he repeatedly beat that recently retired as a past world champ.

Why would I search out a thread started by a Packer fan?! :p

I'm anxious to see what da Matta will bring to F-1. If he can get into the points in say......6-10 races, I would consider that a great success for the Toyota team. They are not a top team, so I have no great expectations otherwise. 6-10 points paying finishes in the Toyota though would say he is a very capable F-1 driver. JMHO.

To show if he is fast in F1, first he needs to smoke his team mate

because if the car is a dog you can't expect much more than that

but we will see. Toyota was very impressed with his test , so we

will see if their a good judge of talent
gtguy 11-21-2002 10:37 AM

Toyota will be better for 2003. They have a good engine...it's the rest of the car that needs work. My prediction is that they'll be contending for "best of the rest" status by 2004. With that in mind, DaMatta should do alright.

The car helps a lot. Just look at Villeneuve. Signing on to Williams put him in an excellent car, and he was good right off the bat. Zanardi got to Williams at a bad time, conversely.

Sounds like Jaguar...

He will be strictly average. Do Ok for a couple of years and then be gone into that great racers retirement home - ALMS.

OT sorry:D
because the Pack played like the Lions last weekend  or as good as Alex Yoong qualifies:lol: their, thats on topic:p
Orion 11-21-2002 03:27 PM

I hope he DNF's every race. After the incredibly poor sportsmanship of blowing a motor and driving the line the entire length of Laguna Seca while others were qualifying is a joke.
That shows his true colors to me.

You are right about LS. That was BS! Bigtime! I don't think he'll DNF every race upon your willing though. Believe me, I've been trying that with Schumacher for years now. It just doesn't work! daMatta screwed up when he did that, I thought it was apalling. I still think he's a talented driver though. I guess we get to see for sure next season.
generator 11-22-2002 11:01 AM

I don't think He will do so well his first or second year with the team. But if he makes it to the third year look for some impressive results.;)
jmott 11-22-2002 11:18 AM

any have examples of dominant drivers that are nice guys?

If he doesn't do well in the first two seasons, there won't be a third for him. Look for Christiano to get deep into the points in at least 3 races. I say DEEP in the points now because of the new points rules. The first eight finishers get points now. Look for him to podium at least once. If he does that (and he will) he will be Toyota's golden boy.

Fred

BTW: Montoya will be the 2003 FIA Formula 1 world drivers champion!
johnfelstead 11-22-2002 08:05 PM

If history holds true, Toyota will have a damn apauling year next year. The first season is a walk in the park compared to the second because you have a full year prior to develop without the presure of going racing.

2nd year you have to manage the race season and the developments, race team work that entails, plus design a new car and test its systems.

History shows the 2nd year is the most dificult, so expect Toyota to suck ass! :D

Just go burst my freaking bubble John! One thing is for sure next year though:

MONTOYA WILL WIN!!!!!

Oh yeah baby!
jmott 11-22-2002 10:13 PM

You're just mad you got own3d.;)

My point was it's incredibly poor sportsmanship to pull the crap he did at LS. I don't care how big an arse you are, you just don't put oil down the ENTIRE length of the track.

you know...
if the entire track in december would covered in oil...

certain AWD cars would have a bit of an advantage....

da 2nd Year Blues
...History shows the 2nd year is the most dificult, so expect Toyota to suck ass!
I agree with ya about that, but on the otherhand, it doesn't matter if the Toyota is a great car or a dud, we'll all be judging him by comparing him with his team-mate, Mr. Panis, who is no slouch... Unfortunately, many folks compare team-mates by their qualifying times... Which won't be much of a favor to a rookie racing for the first time on many of the circuits in a single hot lap qualifying format against a highly experienced and fairly fast team-mate.

It is more likely that we will see da Matta shine on a few Sundays during his first season... Granted, if the car is a dud, he'll be fighting mid-pack for the last few points. But that would be OK, because again, we'll be judging him against his team-mate's performance.

Da Matta may have a race day advantage in that it seems that experienced CART drivers have spent more time battling side by side against their competition than some of the F1 drivers. JV and Montoya are aggressive when dogfighting for position and I would hope that Cristiano carries this trait with him as well.

I'll predict that if da Matta has what it takes to succeed in F1, we will see him shine on a few Sundays in 2003, and then become stronger in 2004...

Otherwise, like Fred said, he'll be tossed out of F1...
