DIY Hood Dampers. Anyone done them?

I searched the Technical forums, and found nothing.
I refuse to pay the premium to have Tein's name on some $40 dampers.
Has anyone made/adapted their own using cylinders meant for another car or application?

I have the Redline Tuning dampers. It took me about 30min to install maybe. When I had just one installed it was strong enough to lift the light aluminum hood up. So having two they are strong paired up. I also paid about $50-$55 for them I beleive.

well this isn't so much technical as it is interior/exterior modification

i made these with lifts from mcmaster-carr. Mini ball joints I found online. and a homemade mount that mimics the tein mount.
the chrome lift in the middle is made by NRG. I got them cheap through a friend so I'm selling my homemade ones.
All and all they cost me about $60 to make. Plus I had to send back two different pairs of lifts to get the final ones right. the first set were too soft and the 2nd set were too long. 3rd try was good.

Do you know the part number and manufacturer of the dampers you decided were just right? Or at least, the number Mcmaster-carr uses?

I'll give you an A+ for effort. However, after it's all said and done, I'd rather spend the extra $40 and have a clean looking set. Cute welds ;)

my thoughts exactly. That's why the chrome ones are on there now.
Fitment is exactly like all the others. Except that instead of threading a ball into your fender the ball joint I used threaded in directly.

I bought this at Auto Zone for $15. All I had to do was enlarge one of the holes. Bolted right up after that. Not the best looking but works great for my CF hood.( I only needed one of these to hold my hood up, 2 would probably be need for the stock hood)

I think the stock WRX aluminum hood is lighter than the CF hood...

No worries, we don't hate Evo owners so bad as to not be helpful. They should, you just need to check where the stock bolts are that could be used to fasten the dampers. I would guess they have some close but i have never paid attention. Of course I think the Redline brand dampers (only $60 for the cheaper set isn't bad at all IMO) uses pop rivets so they should work for sure I would think.

I'm not sure if this would be cheeper but hte B9 tribeca uses one prop, maybe the subaru part is a bolt-in for less then the aftermarket?

So, go to Autozone/Checkers/Advance Auto/whatever, tell them I need a universal hood damper that's 15.63 extended and 9.33 compressed?
And where does one get the threaded ball joint? Ace Hardware?

The dampers at my local Autozone carries had the threaded ball joint + big hinge included but they were 25-30 bucks each.

bringing this thread back.....
Anyone know where to find those ball joints? I just need those tiny things to bolt into the frame and brackets. I have struts that are actually OEM rear hatch struts from an 05 impreza to go with it. I can't find these ball joints!!

IDK if it would work but go to a junk yard and rip them outta the hatch of a wagon and mount them to the hood.

I thought about doing this... even painting them teal/green :)
Autozone has tons, just not sure which would fit...
