European Style US State Tags

The other day at my school I saw a BMW M3 with a European shaped license plate on the front, but like the offical Maryland state tag it had the coat of arms between two groups of three letters, which were same font and color as the official tags, and has space on either side to put the expiration date stickers. I've tried finding online custom tag shops that sell these Euro-shaped US state tags but I havn't had any luck.
Anyone else ever see these and/or know where you can get them?

these plates are not legal in the us.
| rkramer | 09-19-2006 11:29 AM |
in the us you legally need the state plate. anything but will earn you a very quick (and possibly expensive) ticket. Not all states require front plates, so if they don't you are free to do whatever you want up there.
being maryland, is it possible it was a diplomat car? i think they are allowed to have plates from their country of origin.

It wasn't foreign tags though, it was basically the official issue state tags, but in Euro design. Same colors, fonts, insignias, and current expiration stickers, except euro shaped plate. I wish I'd of gotten a picture.
Okay, y'all will seriously laugh at this (as I am right now), but here's a bit of a VERY ROUGH diagram of what I mean:

Oh, and it's definately not an officially offered option to my best searching efforts.

I believe that's still illegal. If any shape was legal BUT you needed our tags, don't you think you would see a grip of cars with funky arse plates?

as someone said ANYTHING other than the state plate is illegal... dude prob had it custom done soo cops would possibly be more lenient
| f1vlad | 09-19-2006 08:57 PM |
Yeah totally illegal. In NH when I had VW, I had EU license plate, and for some time nobody cared, never pulled over. But at some point I got sick of it and put state plate back.
You are saying it as though you can go to DMV and get your vanity Euro plate. Such thing doesn't exist.

Heh. You may not alter state property. If you put European license plate on, it doesn't matter if it actually have your real plate number or not. You'll be signing a improper display ticket.

I know it's totally Illegal and I know for sure it's definately nothing DMV has any part of, I was just wondering if anyone here had ever seen that kind of thing because I thought it was different and hadn't seen it before. I'm not planning on doing anything like that anytime soon.
On another note, I was lucky with my last car, I had an 02' Stratus ES Sedan, black with black tint and shiny chrome wheels, and no tag on the front. Somehow I was never bothered about it, though I know around here it's quite pricey if they nail you.

Oddly enough I just saw an M3 with a rear euro style plate last night. I'm in Arizona so it wasn't the same car. I passed by him and didn't get a chance to see if it had US or AZ tags, but it's the first one I've seen on the roads.

Why would you put European plates if you didn't purchase the car in Europe? Poseur much?

in states where the front tag does not have to be displayed (Pennsylvania IIRC), where a lot of people put decorative plates (of sports teams, their car marque, etc) would it still be illegal?
I know in Maryland you have to have plates displayed front and back, so I'm sure those would be illegal. However, when I used to be a courier for an engineering company, I had to drive through D.C. (Georgetown, mostly) and Arlington, VA. I saw a few cars that were RHD (an old Cooper Mini for example) or otherwise foreign (a couple BMWs and Ferraris) that had foreign plates. But, I think they might have been diplomats or had special permission to use those.

if you have a front mount ic the eu tag is less obstructive to the air flow
