what is the best caliper paint? part 1

waitandbleed92 01-14-2004 01:37 AM

what is the best caliper paint?
What is the best? where can I get it? and can you paint the calipers w/o having to remove them?

Sorry for all the stupid questions

Foliatec is the best "caliper paint" I've heard of. A number of places sell it, but I recommend Teagues Auto:

G2 withstands heat better than Foliatec

I used G2...well worth it. It's been almost a year since I've had it and it still looks as good as when it was put on. Yes, you can put it on wihtout removing the caliper. Tht is what I did.

I used Foliatech and it has been about a year now with no problems. Looks real good and not hard at all. Did not have to remove the calipers to do it either. With talking off around the calipers and taking off the wheels took only a few hours. Then I let them dry overnight before driving again.

I used vht caliper paint, but it is spray on and required the removal of the calipers.

i've had mine foliatec'd for the past 4 years...look the same as the day i did them, and i have tracked my car at portland international, it withstands the heat just fine, better than g2?..dunno..but i'll say i have zero complaints about my foliatec...Foliatec's been around forever for a reason

I used Plasitcoat touch up paint. More colors to choose from. It did take about 4 coats to get a nice buildup and works and looks great. I used a medium sized wide artist brush to apply. Two little bottles did all four calipers for about 6 bucks. It is holding up great. I will probably refresh it in the spring when I do the brake hubs and wheel wells.

I've used VHT and it is good stuff. No need to take the calipers off though... all you have to do is tape off the surrounding areas.

Can these Kits be found at Walmart N Targets? I was at G-2 website and they offered purchases over the internet but nothing like go visit your local AutoZOne!! -- M I K E

Thanks everybody for the recommendations and dialog on caliper paint. I recently had my StopTech calipers painted a flat black (with a slight gloss) and am very happy with the "sleeper look" result so far. Time will tell, how well it holds up, especially when we get into the summer heat and track days and such. I'll keep this thread in mind if it turns out I need to repaint them for some reason in the future.

my friend used rustoleum, he drives hard and it looks the same as the day he did it.

As I was looking for more opinions on caliper paint, I came across this MG/Rover

MG/Rover Fitted with Impreza 4-Pot

anyway, I think I'll go with Folia Tec Black since StopTech's rotors has black colored hats.

Another vote for VHT
Another VHT fan - calipers have held up great so far :)

Hmmm, to put fake brembo stickers or fake Ray's stickers on there.
WR xplosive 02-06-2004 04:43 PM

I was hoping you'd notice the impreza caliper for a non-impreza car

yeah, I'll put an Oakley sticker on my caliper right after painting

how necessary is it to use actual 'caliper paint'? Do you think there is going to be a problem using paint that isnt designed to withstand or dissipate heat?

Actually, what makes it caliper paint? Whats it supposed to do differently?
wrx plus 02-07-2004 02:54 PM

I used a high temp paint from NAPA, and a year later it's still perfect. Yes, you should disasemble the calipers, remove the pads and tape off all the stuff you don't want painted(ie;bleed screws, rubber boots, brake pistons, etc.)
UGotBoost? 02-21-2004 04:31 PM

There's a post on scoobymods.com about painting the rotors (Yes, even the braking face) with high temp paint. The 2 people that had posted the mod showed how a days worth of driving cleaned the surface off.. but it CAN'T be good for your brake pads.. can it??

Also, wouldn't painting your calipers keep them hotter than they should be?? Caliper paint or no, it seems like you're putting a blanket on over your brakes.

that makes sense, but many aftermarket performance calipers have a baked enamel or painted finish.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it's the calipers that are the most critical to keep cool, it's the pads.

Does anyone have any pics of a black car (preferably wrx) with green calipers? I want to accent my car green but I'm not sure if the calipers will look good green.
DrD 02-22-2004 01:17 PM

So do the G2 kits really come with enough to do the whole set of calipers? Do they use multiple coats, or just one? Also - did you guys paint the whole caliper, or did you leave some of the inner portions unpainted? I have been thinking of painting mine black - nothing flashy, just cleaner looking than the matte grey-green stock color...
sonicblue 02-22-2004 01:50 PM

I just used a High Temp Duplicolor paint for my calipers and rotors. Looks perfect still after about 9 months or so.

I used the G2 kit on mine last year. I got 2-3 coats on mine and still had paint left over. I took the brakes nearly off the car and painted them. The brackets were removed totally and the calipers were just hanging by a coat hanger (so they weren't hanging by the brake line). I even painted the hats on the rear rotors so they would match my two piece front rotors..
Just mix up about 2/3 of the paint and save some for later.
SuberStar 02-23-2004 03:51 PM

Anyone got before/ AFTER pics of blue? or maybe red?
alster 02-23-2004 04:18 PM

Did anyone paint their's gold to match the gold rims? The STI has gold rims with gold brembos.
Rally Punx 02-23-2004 09:41 PM

would like to see blue also.
