F1 Picks for silverstone
you should probably get those in. it looks like im not getting an email reminder agian.
Patrick L 07-17-2003 11:32 AM

Williams 1-2, Schumi 3rd.
gtguy 07-17-2003 11:55 AM

Man, Silverstone is a weird one...the prediction is for rain, and if that happens:

1. MS
2. RB
3. KR
4. JPM
5. RS
6. DC
7. FA
8. HHF

If it's dry, on the other hand, try these on:

1. MS (I think he's really motivated, and the testing Ferrari/Bridgestone have done should stand them in good stead)
2. JPM (speaking of motivated. He's getting sick of finishing behind Ralf)
3. KR
4. RS
5. RB
6. DC
7. FA
8. MW

Kevin
skuttledude 07-17-2003 12:41 PM

1. Senna
2. Prost
3.M.Schumacher
4.D. Hill
5. M. Andretti

Ok, so I'm stuck in the past...but those are my choices:)

Davis
gtguy 07-17-2003 02:28 PM

M. Andretti? As long as he stays clear of K. Wendlinger, he'll be fine.

Kevin
TimStevens 07-17-2003 02:49 PM

If he can get off the starting line, that is...

Random picks:

1. MS
2. JPM (hoping for an epic battle... expecting a pass in the pits)
3. DC (call me an optimist)
4. RB
5. Alonso
6. Webber

Kimi and Ralph miss the start because they're arguing over which is the least interesting driver, and both lose track of time!
AndyRoo 07-17-2003 03:37 PM

Here are mine, for no real reason other then I had to pee real bad and so I picked these quickly.

JPM - he can DO it

Kimi - back with a vengeance

Schumi - he'll try pretty hard, tires will not agree

Ralphi - it was fun while it lasted

Webber - geting better and better

Fisichella - praying for rain, could be much higher finish

Coulthard - praying not to embarass himself

Alonso - hes good
ArtGecko 07-17-2003 09:33 PM

:D

Sounds like we all are pretty much picking at random this week. I didn't have to pee, but I did pick rather quicky and with absolutely no forethought. ( I did get my email reminder this time, though. It came today.)

M.Schumacher
J.Montoya
R.Schumacher
F.Alonso
K.Raikkonen
R.Barrichello
M.Webber
D.Coulthard

What do you mean? My picks are always random ;) That's why I don't bother competing. :)

Check Out Ralph's New Fire Suit!
Ralph Firman is on the right here. Also, his new race engineer is displaying the Jordan F1 team's new summer team uniform! Simple, and understated, yes, but try to find the pockets!

1. MS
2. JPM
3. RB
4. Raikkonen
5. Ralfie
6. Dc

But really, Ralf Firman's engineer is the real winner.

Sentimental picks:

1. Nigel Mansell
2. Johnny Herbert
3. Damon Hill
4. Eddie Irvine
5. Margaret Thatcher
6. John Felstead

I have now!

What the fcuk? :D:D:D

I think Michael is going to smoke everyones ass this weekend, big style.

I then see the 2 williams doing well followed by a strong showing from Renault, i think McLaren are stale and will falter, DC WILL choke!

So its

MS
JPM
RS
FA
JT
KR

top six for me.

I would kick all there asses if my STi TypeRA would get through scrutineering. :D:D
Leonardo 07-18-2003 10:49 PM

Juan Pablo will podium ahead of Ferrari and WilliamsBMW will pass the prancing horse for the manufacturers title:banana:

Go Chilli Dog!!!

I am pretty confident about another WilliamsBMW 1-2 but 2-3 is also good for the standings.

Budweiser is the new sponsor. Go figure!

Yeah, but please remember that I did pick John for the points, plus Maggie's team has a much larget budget.

BTW - When WAS the last time there was an on-track pass for the lead :D
gtguy 07-20-2003 04:06 PM

Uh...wow...that was inSANE!

Barrichello was on the pace all weekend, and deserved the win. He did some seriously ballsy driving, including that outside pass of Raikkonen. I'd say Bridgestone has been doing their homework. The hard compound seemed to be the mojo today. M. Schumacher was on the softer B-stone rubber. And Barrichello's car really seemed to be working well, as evidenced by the fact that he kept setting and re-setting fastest lap. M. Schu never set a fast lap.

Montoya made his mark when he left M. Schumacher in his dust during the second restart. He went from 13th to 9th in about two shakes of a lamb's tail. Excellent driving, though I suspect he had a better time getting past Villeneuve than M. Schumacher did.

Kimi did a nice, measured drive for his well-earned third place, though he has to be wondering where Barrichello got the mojo from. Excellent drive from him.

M. Schumacher is thinking that it's better to be lucky than good. He hosed himself in qualifying, then got hosed again when he came into the pits and had to wait, then messed around behind Alonso. Still, when Montoya passed Raikkonen for second place, and M. Schu made his passes to grab fourth, he must have been thrilled. He only lost a point to Raikkonen, and gained on Ralf, who was one place out of the points.

Fabulous drive from David Coulthard. Don't forget he had that 30-second pit stop to replace the cockpit surround. To finish fifth was quite the accomplishment.

What was up with Trulli? He was flying at the beginning, then after his first pit stop, was never the same. Bravo, Jenson Button, too. Nice drive, ditto for Da Matta, flying the Toyota flag.

Villeneuve continues to solidify his "prat of the year" award in my book. I know that 1997 wasn't THAT far away, but I thought that the way he was driving in front of M. Schumacher crossed the line from hard racing to "Hey, I'll crash us both...I don't care." It was nice to see him go off with a lap to go, while Button finished in the points.

The passing...who was saying that it was difficult to pass at Silverstone? Has there been a race in recent memory with more passing for positions, and critical ones, at that. I'm floored. Too bad they can't all be that good, but that one makes up for a lot.

They were battling for a position. The onus is on the driver behind to find a way to pass the guy in front. Villeneuve is not obliged to move over because it's Shumacher trying to pass him. The position is there to be defended. If the stewards think his tactics were illegal then I am sure they would have penalized him.. I mean it's Shumacher behind him after all. It might not have been pretty, it might have been discourteous, rude even, but it's all part of the "game".

I would agree, if Villeneuve were sporting about it. I don't think that he was, but there was some '97 going on, and that's fine. M. Schumacher made that bed for himself, and dealt with it in the race. But Villeneuve went from begrudgingly yielding the spot to Schumacher to almost punting his "teammate," Button.

Schumacher had the championship to think about and had to show circumspection, and Villeneuve knew that and took advantage of it. Is that racing? Yep. Is it sporting? No, IMHO.

I dunno...hard racing is one thing. Holding up a guy whom you know has a superior car and is in the championship fight by playing the risk card is something else. But proof is in the pudding, just as Villeneuve deserved to win in '97, after Schumacher tried to ram him.

Now, to show that the shoe can be on the other foot, Renault's Gascoyne slammed Schumacher for what he claimed was "putting Alonso into the grass." So sporting or not is clearly a matter of perspective.

Kevin
johnfelstead 07-20-2003 09:13 PM

I would like to hear Ross Brawns opinion on Shueys blocking move on Alonso on hanger straight lap one, where he put Alonso onto the grass at 180MPH. Was that "classy driving"?

Villeneuve was OK with Shuey IMHO, but the way he chopped Button off was well out of order and the only move in the whole race that was downright dangerous. It was poetic justice than Jenson managed to pick up 1 point from last on the grid, whilst Jaques put it into the gravel, again. Can someone remind me why he is the 2nd highest paid driver in F1 please?

Great race, Rubens drove incredibly well, so did DC, which wasnt expected. :D

I say he has Campion material, if not 2nd!!!

This from AutoSport:

<<The last time a protester invaded the track was at the German GP in 2000 at Hockenheim. Ironically, Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello won both races.>>

Do we suppose that Rubens will start paying people to invade the track space now?

I re-watched the start, and Schumacher's move on Alonso was rather thuggish. I'd forgotten about it, in the frenzy of the race. I wonder if he somehow justified it by thinking that they are competitors. Hmmm. Gascoyne sure was pissed about it.

I thought that JV, though it isn't in his nature, should have done what Webber did after the second Schumacher pit stop. MS came out, and Webber moved right over, letting him through to get on with the championship fight.

Looks like Bridgestone has the mojo back, though it's difficult to tell from one race. But the was Barrichello was moving the car around, trying to pass people, he must have had grip for days. And he was sure as hell fast. I can't get over how cool it was to see him win.

John, I don't think that Villeneuve will be the second highest-paid driver in F1 for long...there are the persistent rumors that BAR is going to drop his butt like a bad habit, first chance that they get. Look at 1997, when he took a superior Williams and still managed to let Schumacher into the points fight, so that Villeneuve was a point or so down to Schumacher going into the last race, and had the Ferrari not faltered, he probably wouldn't have won the championship that year.

I'm still not convinced about R. Schumacher under pressure. I think it's one thing for him to get pole, and drive off into the distance with clear track. He seems to have problems whenever he has to race. Raikkonen, on the other hand, has a pair of brass ones, as does Montoya. I couldn't believe how quickly he scythed through the field after the second restart.

Kevin
Dr. WOT 07-21-2003 10:43 AM

Great race. They should have maniacs run out onto the track more often ;)

That was a dazzling first lap. While I still miss the old Silverstone, there are some fantastic high speed changes of direction in this new configuration that really shows off how unbelievably nimble these modern F1 cars are. Few other circuits have that, Silverstone is a great track.

I would hold off a heaping too much praise upon Bridgestone-- the cooler temps at Silverstone were obviously going to favor them. When the Japanese tires excel on a hot abrasive track they will have proven their progress.

I didn't have a problem with MS v AF or JV v MS, although the JV v JB move was ugly. JV has turned into the poisoned pill of F1. There are few thing I detest more than an overpaid athlete who doesn't even appreciate how lucky he is. Worse yet an overpaid athlete who's more concerned with his bank account than his team's success. JV GO AWAY!!!!

Rubins was in a class of his own. Brilliant driving. The way he stormed up on Kimi and then took him down was thrilling. Too bad he doesn't show this form more often.

What a great season we're having. Good technical parity, a variety of race winners, and a wide open championship. I can't wait for the remainder of the season.

something like that... In this race he did it from something like 14th place after the scotish fool caution. It was amazing how fast he moved up through the field while the Shumacher brothers just sat back and waited for pit stops.
