Finally STi Splitters...

I finally bought some STi splitters. I was just wondering what method everyone was using? Cut all tabs and mount with screws and double sided tape? Which double sided tape did you guys use? What problems to look out for? Any info would help.... and if you guys know a how to thread let me know. I tried to search already...

To install the splitters, I used some painters tape on the bumper and used the splitter to mark where the slits go. I used the tape so there are no scratches. Then I used an appropriate sized drill bit and drilled a bunch of holes to make the slit. Then I used a knife to "clean" out the slits. Make sure that you cut the tab off on the front/side of the splitter so it'll sit flush. Mount the bottom and rear with the factory bolts and clips and viola!

it is really not that bad, you aren't "hacking" up your bumper. scotch tape is the exact same width of the slits that you have to make. in that thread it even says the size of drill bit to use... read it...

yea i can tell you that the TAB that require you to cut holes in ur bumper are
not necessary...to have the freedom of going back to STOCK anytime you want...you def wanna just chop of those taps and use double side tape...
there're 5 bolts each side to secure the piece on the bumper so...u will be just fine without the tabs...

I could see why one might not be confident in themselves enough to cut holes in their bumper. I wasn't with myself at first either, after the first cut, its cake. However, i could not imagine myself going 75+mph with these things just attached with tape, nor could i imagine going through an automatic carwash with them attached with only tape or blasting through snow with them being held by only tape.

i cut holes in the bumper. I figured if i ever sold the car i dont see why i would take them off. it also made it feel more secure on the bumper. Its relatively easy and i also think it helps the splitter align better.

I cut the tabs off so I didn't have to hack into my bumper. I went to auto zone and bought the gray tape that is SUPER strength. Its made to hold emblems and what not on. There is NO way my splitters are ever gonna come off.

so for those who cut the tabs off.... do you guys have problems going over 75 mph or have problems at the car wash?

No, splitters have not budged at speeds well over that.
Even after a few good scrapes, they havent budged a bit

All Im going to say is this, would you put an actual bumper on with tape? Would you put a wing on with tape? Personally, I like to know that things are not going to go flying off. Yes, that tape is very strong, and more than likely can withstand the resistance, but Im pretty sure since my splitters are secured by clips and the tabs on my bumper, that I will never have to worry about them coming off...just my .02

I cut the tabs off, used 3M double sided tape and have had no problems. Speeds over 75mph and washed it many times since. I'm with you on not cutting the bumber, just didn't seem to be worth it. I even took it to a few body shops, because I thought that the tape wouldn't hold. But with strong tape and the bolts, it's just fine. I have had mine on the car for close to 7 months and no issue at all.

how is it not worth cutting the holes? i dont understand... maybe i am missing something... its not hard, and you have to be an absolute moron to not be able to accomplish this task properly. Seriously, i have built skill level 2 models that were harder to do than installing these.

i used the 3M double sided too! the red stuff is the strongest!! i even bottomed out on my driveway one morning and nothing even happened. thank 3M.

Due to my lowered car, I wish I had cut the holes instead of the tabs. Any time I bottom out (usually on steep driveways) the splitter starts half hanging off. They've also started bulging a bit...yeah..my car has a somewhat exciting life...I swear there is no double sided tape that can hold these things flush to my car for more than a week.

that was my main reason for making sure they were tight as possible... i was afraid of the speed bumps and my lowered car in the work parking lot. As said before, the tabs also help keep them aligned better as well... plus, as far as taking them off, who wants used splitters w/ glue residue all over them and the tabs cut off.

i cut into my bumper as well. go w/what ever way you feel more comfortable with. if you don't think you'll ever take the splitters off cut in to the bumper. if you think you'll end up sellin them or goin w/say a new lip use the tape.
| mountjonas | 10-02-2006 09:59 PM |
when i get the courage, i'm going to cut into the bumper. i figure that if i ever trade the car in, i'll either leave them on, or find someone to trade the whole bumper with me.

There are 3 bolts per side too that hold them on. Not JUST the tape.

I am going to be getting these in a week or so and just wondering for those people who decided use the tape. Where did you put the tape on the splitter and how much of it did you use? Also is there any trick to making sure it is straight before taping it?

i think for those who didnt cut holes are more concern about "WHO WANT A CAR THAT HAS A BUMPER WITH HOLES on the side" rather than problems that they might run into when selling the used splitters..they are only $120 afterall
its also not about having the guts to cut holes...its more like you can't go back to stock if you ever wanna trade in the car or whatever...no one want 6holes on the bumper...
of coz..to each of their own...people should do whatever they want to their car...this is America...FREEDOM babe...:p

I agree completely. I personally plan on driving this car until it is no longer drivable, and then, Im gonna make it drivable again, no matter what it takes. I have a lot of stuff done to my car that nobody else is probably going to want, but that I absolutely love, so this car is mine, and I am not really afraid to try any mod. I really want to do the JDM roof vent, just gotta save up enough money, and thats cutting a hole in the roof, that one is completely irreversable....

Definetly go with the cutting route. Despite slicing the tip of my finger off with a steak knife, the end result was well worth it! Oh, and another little tip - scotch tape = width. WRX ignition key = height. Use both to gauge changes you might need to get the splitters to fit right.
