Ricey or Not? part 1

STI 2 NV 10-10-2003 01:17 PM

Ricey or Not?
I'm just looking to dress up my engine bay a little w/out having to spend hundreds on cf. basically, i was thinking of just spraypainting the black covers, such as the solenoid cover and alternator cover? i personally think it will look pretty good, but would u guys say this is too ricey? keep in mind this car will end up in shows in the future and i'd like it to look a little more attractive. i will not be doing anything like adding stickers, 20" bling blings, or aluminum wing. just looking for some things to do that are cheap and will improve the look a tad. what do u guys think? thanks for the input.

this rule always stands. if you have to ask, it probably is.

haha, not necessarily. i personally don't think it's ricey, but just wanted some feedback on what others thought. i'd just like to make the engine bay look a little nicer instead of just black everywhere.

Nah its not rice.. i say go for it and let us know how it went...
Kean 10-10-2003 05:38 PM

I personally don't care for it and think it would look cheap. To me, it would be the same as painting your stock calipers red or gold to make them stand out......but that's just my opinion.

Spray paint them what color?

i'd probably spray paint them blue, it actually matches pretty close to the wrb, just a little brighter. i'm planning on changing the hoses up to blue, so i thought it might look nice.

Nothing wrong with that IMO.

Well if you're gonna do it, do it right. Goto paintscratch.com and get a can or two of color coded paint, then prep the pieces, you'll need to sand with a fine grit sandpaper pretty well to get the paint to adhere properly.

I usually reserve judgement on "rice" as i think its not really what you do to your car, but how you do it. If it turns out to be some generic blue that doesn't match your hoses or anything, then you've probably failed at making it badass and ended up making it ghetto.

Good luck on your project and let us know how it goes w/ pics!
gjhsu 10-11-2003 12:11 PM

pssst. If you dont' tell anyone you did it, they won't know if it's rice or not

Seriously, though, if you like it, go for it.
wHitEmpReza 10-11-2003 03:01 PM

RICE!

:p
SDscooby 10-11-2003 10:14 PM

I don't really think it's rice. I would never spray paint stuff under my hood though. I don't know, I just don't think it would make anything look any better.
Nightwing 10-11-2003 10:20 PM

Listen......as long as you buy the EXPENSIVE gold spray paint....it ain't ricey!

*note* if anyone says "ain't" and they are giving you advice...i would not take it.

as far as if it is ricey i say
RICE-A-RONI

dont do it, if you want some color a red sti intake manifold would be very anti-rice. the judges like it to.
LinuxGuy 10-12-2003 11:08 AM

AWWW YEAH! JDM 24KT gold wheels yO.
Adiliyo 10-12-2003 11:17 AM

since you said you won't add stickers, 20" wheels or big aluminum wings..you have some good taste credit built up ;), so if you match the paint up then it shouldn't be too bad i guess...personally i wouldn't do it since i don't look into the engine bay a whole lot (unless i was to be doing something in there..but i don't go staring at it :) )

well, this car will be entered into shows once i get things rolling both with show and go. i just wanted it to look a little better. i think painting a couple things isn't going to do any harm. if i don't like it i'll take it off.
Tobey 10-12-2003 10:12 PM

after having my wrx for a year and a half all of the brackets underhood are all crappy looking, so i am having themall powdercoated. i may do silver or a blue to match the car. i am polishing all my i/cpiping and manifold and doing blue samco hoses... my car shows and i will race with it next year (now that i have a second vehicle when something breaks). if people think my car is "ricey" they can go pound sand

i think it all depends on what color you paint stuff.

if it matches then it would not be rice in my book

see i was thinking of maybe doing white, so then no matter what color blue hoses i do it shouldn't be a problem. i think matching the paint to the hoses is going to be tough. any other color suggestions?
zombiedog 10-13-2003 09:42 AM

Stock = Boring

Derssup does not = Rice

Rice is dressup done tacky and cheap, it is possible to do any dressup nicely.

There are ppl here that think dressup is for big egos while at the same time modding their engines to go faster than a Porsche. What is this called??? Ding ding ding...egooooo!

I do dressup and speed mods so I suppose my ego is double-WIDE!!
TygerStile 10-14-2003 01:28 AM

As long as you're happy with the way it looks, then go for it. There's nothing wrong with trying to look a little different, as long as it's in good taste.
THAWA 10-14-2003 10:48 AM

On the topic of spraypaint, The best stuff for plastics and such is vinyl dye. Plasti-kote makes some and I think duplicolor but plasti-kote has a wider selection. What it does is it actually dyes the plastic to the new color. It doesn't just add another layer of sometihng on top to chip off, or smear, or run or anything. It's pretty much fool-proof aswell, if you spray too much on a part just let it settle, it'll soak in and you wont see the drips/running. I'm not sure what the ideal temp for it is though so it may be dangerous in your engine bay. But if it's entirely for shows you might be okay.
DISCOPOPE 10-14-2003 05:19 PM

just dont ever set a wrench down on a painted part... you end up having to repaint..

also, please tell me you plan on removing the pieces before you spray them.....
